Let's see now...

Ubendastot the Great Golden Wyrm, a representative of the Soapmaker's Guild, was sent to Frenzywork to protest the treatment of the other soapmakers. Now he's found himself drafted...
He needs soaper skill, and ideally sworddwarf skill. He's tring to prove to the fortress that soapers can be useful, too, and is starting the Soapers' Union of Democracy, which seeks to repeal the current caste system, or at least get soapers a better place in it. This may spawn stuff like the Cheesemakers' Union for Rights of Dwarves.

In reality, I'm not 100% sure if I'm doing it right or wrong. What I know is that I have four hives, of which two are set to be gatherable and two which are not. All four are stated to be "ready for split". I have enough of jugs and pots and still DZA is listed as "No Job"...

Looks like we have lots of people are claiming soldiers. Those claimings will take place as soon as I get my equipment production going as at that point I will start looking for suitable soldiers.

Oh, and unless next migrant wave brings a good candidate for noble I will just make one and name him Uti...

Oh, and I think I figured out my problem with beekeeping; it hasn't been six months since I constructed the hives. Have to wait and see what comes...


EDIT: Oh, and GreatWyrmGold, do you actually want your name to be "Ubendastot the Great Golden Wyrm"? If so then I must use some other name (most probably Just GreatWyrmGold or something like it) for reference and use the long version in journal...

6th of Limestone, year 202

I noticed one thing today; our beekeeper DZA hasn't done anything since the artificial hives were installed. Now, I wouldn't mind the situation if there wasn't actually anything for him to do regarding the specific field of industry, but I just went out and checked the hives and those are already ready to be either split up or harvested.

Unless the lazy bastard comes around and actually realizes there are things he should have been doing I think I must have a nice little chat with him. Oh, and by "nice" I don't actually mean nice, in contrary.


10th of Sandstone, year 202

I have been wondering why nothing has been finished lately. Well now I know. You see, our miners have finished up with the room which will contain the ore storage for our forges. The room has been mined and emptied from loose stone. The problem is, someone gave the order to fill that stockpile already and didn't specific who should be doing that. The result? Everybody have been spending their time in moving the ores to the new stockpile!

Well, it seems that most of the hauling has been done already, so we should be able to return to normal schedule soon enough. But if I find out who gave that order the dwarf in question is going to regret it... and most probably find himself or herself at the gates of Armok's world...


13th of Sandstone, year 202

One of our peasants has finished up making a giant cave spider silk rope. And here I thought we don't even have a clothier workshop...
It's nice, though I wonder the purpose of blue jade, ruby and bronze spikes. Also I still haven't figured out how in the Armok's balls she was able to fit that picture of Rovod Searingwheel to the rope? And who the hell IS Rovod Searingwheel??



Oh, and I had the small "chat" with DZA today... apparently, at least if what he said is true, I didn't have a clue about beekeeping. Even though it seemed to me like the hives were already ready to be gathered he must wait a bit more before the gathering would result the maximum amount of honey. Okay, if that's the case then his idling is acceptable... but Armok shall take him if he was lying to me!


18th of Sandstone, year 202

The sector of metal industry is finally read! Damn it took long, but finally we can produce our own weapons and armors.



So far we have four furnaces and five forges. It seems that the anvils I literally took from human caravan became handy. We also have one wood furnace down there, but that is going to be torn down as soon as it has produced enough coal to start making more from lignite and bituminous coal.

Speaking of coal, it may be that I have lower my aesthetic standards and order the veins of coal ore to be mined. If I don't do that we will run out of coal almost immediately. Of course, as the veins are located in the floors dedicated to smiths and masons I see no big deal in it. If those veins were in nobility floor I would reconsider that order carefully, but at this point I see it more important to have enough coal than how beautiful the floor architecture is in those floors...


20th of Sandstone, year 202

Armok blessed us with another group of migrants today. Nine dwarves came, which while is not as many I had hoped for, is more than the average amount of migrants we get in one group. On the other hand these dwarves were just some random peasant, two most noticeable dwarves being the mason and armorer, neither having too much experience in those fields.

So, now that our fortress is growing fast I think I need to delegate some of tasks to others. For example, bookkeeping takes too much time from other, more important things. So, I went to have a small discussion with one of the newest migrants who had said that his father is some kind of noble back in mountain home. I think he mentioned something about caravans and such so perhaps this guy knows something about counting and taking an inventory.


21st of Sandstone, year 202

Yes, looks like I was right, the dwarf who claimed to have some noble blood running inside his veins does indeed know how to count. So hereby I introduced him to the world of bookkeeping. I hope he enjoys it as that will be his sole purpose down here.

For those who may be wondering, it has been purposeful decision to drop the number of pictures posted along the journal. This is because some of the pictures (like from the announcement of artifact) doesn't actually add any value to the story itself. It also becomes a burden to handle 20+ pictures with each update. This also allows the removal of "spoiler" tags from each story updates.

Yeah, no worries. DZA is probably just preparing himself mentally before he goes into MAXIMUM BEEKEEPING MODE!

Soon, the other dwarves will see him and be like, "Oh shit, you see DZA keeping those bees over there? He's keeping those bees like a FUCKING BOSS!"

And then some fine young female dwarves will come up to him and be like, "So we heard you're a beekeeper. You wouldn't have happened to save any honey for us, would you?*wink wink*"

And then DZA will be all like, "Bitch, out my way. I got some muthafuckin' bees to keep."

And that's exactly how it will happen.

16th of Timber, year 202

The annual caravan came today and, just like last year, the liaison as well. At least this time the position was given to someone more worthy than some lowly fisher, this liaison is a craftsdwarf.

So, first I met the merchants. This year they brought lots of valuable stuff like cages, metal, food, alcohol and other things we haven't managed to create or gather yet. I had to paid almost twenty thousand bucks but I assure you, it was worth of it!

After the trading was done it was time to meet the liaison. After some random chatting, during which the liaison expressed how surprised she was to see how well we are actually doing out here, it was time to some serious business. I requested some iron, steel, coal and bolts. After that I was given the list of requests made by the nobility back in the mountain home. The list included such things like different types of armor, cheese, prepared meals and wooden figures. None of the things mentioned in the list will be made for trading, so I already threw the list away.

After we were finished the liaison left our fortress. I wonder why she didn't wait for the caravan to be ready, it would have been much safer to travel through these cursed lands while under protection.


3rd of Opal, year 202

The upper section of the entrance, also known as archery tower, is ready. The original plan was altered a bit but not much and everything should function as planned. The tower offers clear line of sight to all three directions, making it easier to spot approaching enemies. I must tell you, our masons did a good job with this.



Now we only need some archers to station up there...


17th of Opal, year 202

Our smiths have begun the production of weapons and armors. Soon we should have better army.


20th of Opal, year 202

Few days ago I ordered the miners to dig deeper. I didn't actually have anything special in mind, except perhaps to find out the mineral composition of the lower layers. What they did find down there was quite a surprise: there is this huge cavern just few floors bellow our noble quarters!



The breach occurred just few hours ago so we don't have actual access to the cavern, but so far it looks rather barren. No trees, no plants, nothing, just wastes of muddy rock floor. When we have our small military ready our miners shall connect the stairs to the cavern and then our soldiers shall take a quick exploration tour inside the cavern.


8th of Obsidian, year 202

One of our masons has produced a nice cabinet from claystone. It has few simple decorations, like bands and rings, all of which are made from claystone.



It is actually nice little artifact, at least it has real use. But why didn't the mason put some more effort in it. Not talking about the quality of the actual cabinet but the amount and types of decoration. In my opinion there should be more pictures in it, made by using different kinds of materials.

So, what's the situation with the cavern exploration? Not much has actually happened since the breach, most of the time our miners have been rerouting the tunnels and stairs so that we can have entrance placed on a section I think should be good and easier to protect. In the mean while our masons have been walling and flooring all the gaps so that we can have a safe route to the not yet ready entrance.


12th of Obsidian, year 202

Two of dwarves were assigned to military today; Hugo and Winterwrath. I didn't handle the specifics as I thought Murkyring would be better dealing with the details. All I know is that two dwarves entered the military, both received full iron armor set, one got iron axe and one got silver hammer.

Next we shall focus on the exploration of the cavern. But before that we need to get the entrance ready. And that's the task our miner are working on.


19th of Obsidian, year 202

Our soldiers are inside the cavern. So far their reports have been quite short, not much has been discovered. At first it seemed that the whole cavern is empty but then our soldiers spotted some cave spider silk webs. And that means there are cave spiders, which means there must be something those things eat. And what I remember from the days I was a young kid my teacher told me that cave spiders and giant cave spiders eat living things. There is also another thing that support the possibility of living creatures down there; our soldiers spotted a cloud of miasma coming from somewhere southeast from the entrance. I ordered them to check it out though carefully.



While our soldiers are exploring the cavern our masons are installing some traps to the entrance. After all I don't want that some strange creature just walks inside our fortress while our soldiers aren't there...

20th Sandstone, Year 202:
Finally got to this fortress they call Frenzywork. I can already see some people practically being slaves. Back in my town, they would have been taken in by some local dame and cared for. Bah, it seems I'll be one of them soon enough. I'll go and see if there's a free slot for a mason.

16th Timber, Year 202:
I've been training in my new trade since the overseer had the graciousness of letting me become a mason. The caravan and liason arrived. I personally think that the liason was more than a little bit too...average. A bloody craftsdwarf? You'd think they'd be some snobbish rich bloke with no time for commoners like us. Well, I picked up the list the overseer made and hell, what were the idiots we call royalty THINKING?! We are barely surviving out here, and they expect us to make all this crap!

3rd Opal, year 202:
Finished working on the archery tower near the entrance. I must say, this is pretty good stonework, and it showed on the overseers face. Well, at least when bloody elves come to trade, we can shoot them full of nice sharp bolts.

8th Obsidian, year 202:
My fellow mason just made a nice looking cabinet. No doubt some rich bloke who was used to being rich will pinch it. Also, I've been working along with the other masons to make walls and flooring for the cavern entrance. They'll regret it when troglodytes and bird men start ripping people's heads off.

12th Obsidian, year 202:
Oorah! I just got drafted into the army, and I just got my favourite tool; a nice big hammer to smash heads in with. Hehe...let's just see how many heads I can smash in with this. I got drafted in with our armorer, Hugo. Don't know the bloke, but from what I hear, he's the best armorer this place's got to offer. Hopefully he can use an axe: from the looks of these caverns, we'll need to smash some heads in.

19th Obsidian, year 202:
Nothing much in these bloody caverns. Me and the rest of the military have been cramped down here for a week, and all we've found is some webs. Cave spiders.... I don't like the looks of them brutes. Anyway, I'd better get back to duty.
