A use for refuse
« on: December 27, 2011, 12:11:29 pm »

So this is an idea to change the farming system a tiny bit.  Refuse of the rotten stuff variety, rotten cartilege, rotten food, rotten vermin corpses, etc.  Could be used instead of potash.  This would make fertilizing a farm plot an actually attractive idea in more cases than usual and would provide a way to dispose of rotten refuse without atom smashing it.  Perhaps it would need to be burned in an ashery first or perhaps it could be used as is.  Either way I think this would be a realistic and useful addition to the game.

Maybe if it's mixed with potash or ashes.
But with the current farming system almost no one uses fertilizers.

Uses? Craftshops should take care of that.

Personally I don't think it would be a feasible idea, unless there was a plant specific fertiliser crop like a turnip, you'd have to rely on your Dwarves being incompetent.

You can't process cartilage and some kinds of tissues.

Exactly, nobody uses it because the fertilizer is much more valuable for other uses and the benefit is not worth it.

Refuse is a cheaper fertilizer, and hard to get rid of as well.

Making the fertility of land degrade over time would also give more incentive to use fertilizer.

Come on you know us.
We would end up sacrificing cats and elves to boost the farms.

Has there been any research into this?  If I enclose a miasma filled room under a farm plot, will the crops grow fruitier?  Someone needs to investigate this.  I will look into it, if my fortress ever stabilizes.

This refuse change is one of those subtle ideas, very good combo idea, that might have been introduced had it been linked accordingly in the scheme of things, but its anyones guess if its even in the game, I suppose.  I'd love to know if my bee hives were helping my farm plots.  They should, pollinate them?  Dunno.

There is no reason a bee hive can't be underground, other than the underground flying bug, bug.  No reason, whatsoever.  One of those things I guess, like.. pigs flying and dogs talking.  Bees don't need sunlight to live.  Just its warmth.

Sincerely,
Knutor

Turnips are feed for cattle, not fertiliser, unless it's different in the states.

1. Turnips are quite tasty :/
2. They are normally used as feed, yes.
3. I don't live in America, so I wouldn't know :P
4. Turnips put nutrients back into the soil when they grow. Odd plants. Just saying it would be nice to have a plant like that in DF :P

TURNIPS FOR THE PEASANTS. ALWAYS TURNIPS.

What if you could mash it up and turn it into animal feed at a farmers workshop? Any three refuse animal items can be made into three units of livestock feed, which can be brought to food animals and it makes them fatter and thus they give more meat? I dunno, it could kinda work like animal fertilizer.
