So i'm thinking of getting writish
« on: December 27, 2011, 08:31:25 am »

I am a "lost cause" of a writer.
you know, the type that claims that he's got this brilliant piece of work in his head, but then keeps on nagging about it without delivering.
In the end he delivers a half piece of horrible messy writing, and leaves, or stops on his tracks, goes back, and re-write it from scratch.
Yeah, i know the type, you know the type, i *am* the type.
so, what is the big news? the big news is that, be it by luck, or not, i had to format completely my system. completely.
lost everything.
from drafts, to notes, to 98 pages of a skeletous written story.
so, since i still have my head, (ah! no virus will ever get that!) i decided it would be fine to rewrite it, but this time, in order to avoid being taken down by my mood, by the muse, or by anything else, i've decided i simply need community help. Not in the form of grammar correcting, but simply in the form of readers.
I do not claim to be the next jk rowling, nor stephen king, nor anyone else you think is a pro-writer. I just want to write a book, use the amazing offer of amazon for self publishing (so it might spread a "bit" around, not much) and then see how it goes. no expenses, no worries for strange small size 1 characters at the borderline were it's written that you sell your soul to the devil, and frankly less stress.
SO i need readers, and i know this community isn't made of raving hormone-filled teenagers. So, since what i intend to write is *not* a harry potter book based on friendship, magic (there IS magic, but just, dirtier) and is quite frankly done with the intent to bring back the gritty noirish and dark tone of the past, all with the cold steeled iron of science fiction. (science fiction? magic? what are you talking about?) i simply need readers.
readers who should read as if they had actually "bought" the book, for one dollar. i'm not thinking to make it cost more than that. so, it's quite simple, you read it, you enjoy it, you might leave a comment.
i trust the community, so, let's see what you think of it.
so, who's in favor of me posting here the title-author notes (this ones are worth reading)-thanks-first chapter?!

You should post at least what is the book about. Because if you don't, it's like you are asking people that hate history books to read one. Better would be to post at least 10 pages so the pre-readers and readers know what they're going into. Also good luck. Without natural talent, it's hard to be a writer.

Why not finish writing it first? There's no substitute for a bit of elbow grease - just put in the work, and write for yourself.

*not* a harry potter book based on friendship, magic (there IS magic, but just, dirtier) and is quite frankly done with the intent to bring back the gritty noirish and dark tone of the past, all with the cold steeled iron of science fiction.

i'll post the author notes. so you'll see it from there:

Copyright of Alberto Catellani ©
While reproduction of pieces of this work is not frowned upon,
I kindly ask of thee to ask for my written permission first.
Since I kindly asked you to kindly ask, you should gently comply.

This work is a work of fiction, if anything seems similar to anything else, it’s just a sheer casual event. Give the fault to the space time continuum, I’m faultless.

The author has the possibility to take himself not seriously.
The reader on the other hand should seriously read and open mouth later.
This book contains acts of war, which will be vividly depicted, it contains strong scenes which might even rival those over-budget Hollywood films with overpriced stars. There is not going to be a "pew pew" line and then a time jump. Bullets will fly. Bullets will hit. Blood will be scattered.
So I do not suggest these book to the following categories:
1)People who cannot distinguish a book from reality
2)People who have to make a point of their religions, every, single, time. Even when in a book.
3)People who might easily be offended by mass genocide of alien civilizations.
4)People who might easily be offended by mass genocide of human civilizations. (if you were fine with the one before, and not with this one, you should rethink a bit yourself)
5)People who actually think this book should be burned to preserve human innocence (i think this too, just so you know, but it kept nagging to come out, so i'll do it)
6)I’m sure there is a sixth, seventh and probably infinite amount of categories of people who should not read this book.

So, who should read this book?
This book should be read by the following individuals:
1)Those who wish to take their minds off a boring day
2)Those who want a valid excuse not to listen to their wife’s ranting
3)Those who think buying books out of unknown authors is a fine way to improve the world
(and my wallet)
4)People who can think and not stop at the first line.
5)People who love space. Space battles. High technological battlefields. Explosions!

Why not finish writing it first? There's no substitute for a bit of elbow grease - just put in the work, and write for yourself.

on that piece, i can't answer, i don't know, and maybe my elbow grease disappeared into the sink.
Mind you, i'm not saying i'm lazy, i just find it more natural to write stuff which does get a feedback, than writing stuff which does not.

Oh, i dunno about natural talent, or not.
i just know that as long as i can imagine the scene, there are far enough words to describe it. Worst to worst there's the dictionary.

I am sorry, shadenight, but you are doing this wong. These notes seem like a sales pitch for a book that you have not written.

Try writing an outline of your book, then sit down every day in front of your computer and type something — or not, but sit down and try. Do this consitently for a certain amount of time every day. Finish the book, proofread it, then show us. What you are doing now will only lead to lethargy, procrastination, and embarassment.

I know this, as I have taken a similar approach in the past.

scurried the net. i'll have to rechange the way this topic i opened will work. since posting more than an excerpt (in this case, the author notes) would brand the product as a "reprint".
and i did say i was serious on finally having one published. (even if through the amazon self publishing).
so, scratch the first posts, from now on, i'm simply going to comment on how well/bad the writing of my book is going to be.

Make sure to use capital letters in your book.

Remember that the printed word has not all the body language and audible tone of the spoken word, so I probably sound harsher than I am attempting to be. My refusal to use emoticons probably does not help.

Good luck, Shadenight.

@fenrir, no problem! if i want to publish i must learn to accept critiques, and other people's way of thinking. thank you for the good luck.

@lordcooper: obviously i'm using uppercase! and capital letters.
it's just that when on a forum i always believe to be actually talking to other people, and it's not like in the dialogue i end up saying "Uppercase H-ello"
it's just force of habit. if you look at the author's notes you can see that capital letters were actually used. U_U

The warning for the actual book itself seems like it doesn't even have to be there, mainly because I doubt someone will be offended by a what I assume is a Sci-Fi Fiction book.

But really, give us an outline of what the book is and maybe a sample and we'll give you an opinion/some advice.

1. Most of that author's notes sounds like unnecessary ranting.

2. How is the presence of readers going to make you not delay the project?

3. I still don't know anything about it except that it's in space and may involve genocide.

It might even have the opposite effect.

Write it in Google Docs or Office Live this time. That being said, I'm not interested in reading based on your strange sales pitch. You could at least have posted a paragraph or something of your writing as a sample, rather than write a commercial for something non existent.
