Here you are, at the end of 2012. You made a good number of new friends back in 2011, and I certainly hope you've held onto them. You're keeping better contact with them all too, I hope? If not, give them a call, text, or email as appropriate... even if just for your past-self's sake. You know who they all are. It makes no sense finding neat people who you've had good times with, only to let them drift away. The same goes for keeping in touch with your family! I know you've let your embarrassment and apprehensions get the better of you in the past, but don't let that come between your family and you. You love them, and they love you; make sure you let them know that, however you have to do that. And, if you've had to accept assistance from them, so long as it's setting you up to be in a better place in the future, don't let that get you down.
Speaking of setting you up for the future, how's the school been going? Got that Associate's from the Community College yet? I can't see you having graduated with that dual-major Bachelors yet, but maybe you've made some headway at the University as well? Remember that each step forward, even if it isn't exactly where you saw yourself going, is still a step forward; so long as you're making progress, things are okay. That said, only you can hold yourself to the standards necessary to see yourself through to where you want to be. If you're not there yet, best adjust tack, alright?
Anyway, here's hoping that things settled out fiscally too. In case you need a reminder, the last New Year started out with you having no savings, skirting the edge of a negative income. Maybe you found work at the hospital or university? I hope you found something that's working well for you, whatever it may be, or that you've kept up searching. Take it from me; whatever it is, it beats loading boxes into trucks and selling books for minimum wage. Excelsior, and all that good stuff.
Just to review, how many of those outstanding projects have you wrapped up by now? Have you shipped all those books and such out west? Is Blunderbuss playable yet? Did you ever go gold-panning with Dad? Did you help the grandparents fix up the farm? Did you go swimming last year? What's the last book you read, both for school and for yourself? Did you make it to PAX, Comicon, or any of the other cons you and your buddies set your sights on? Also, what new projects have you started? Remember, there's no sense pouring all that time and energy into planning something out, if you're not going to execute it. Sure, there's something to be said for the mental exercise of planning, but half-baked plans don't bring anything to the rest of the world... even if executing those plans was just something to provide others with entertainment. Remember Ze Frank's words on
Inspiration. While we're at it, he had some good things to say about
sleep and the formation of new memories too. "Memories" cover more than just what you've studied for exams. I hope you've been sleeping better, and more regularly, since a lack thereof has been at the root of a lot of your other issues, even in indirect ways. As a general rule, make sure you've been taking care of yourself too, okay?
Alright, I'll have to stop writing this soon; the last thing I want to do is dissociate myself so hard by writing to myself that I wind up with a separate personality (I'm sure you understand). It'd be pretty awesome if you could send a reply, but lacking breakthroughs in temporal shenanigans, I suppose I'll just have to spend the next year becoming you instead. Why don't you start putting together a message for yourself another year from now, and send him my best wishes. Take care, and find solace in the fact that, no matter what crappy things might have happened since last year, your past-self totally wants you to make it to where you and I both want you to be. And on a more practical note, there are plenty of people around you who feel the same way. Keep on rocking, alright?
Oh yeah, and on the off chance that you ended up going to the Yucatan with all them Crazies this year (oh I can only imagine what the media is going to make of this New Year), I hope you had an awesome end of the 13th B'ak'tun. Don't drink the Kool-Aid, and I'll catch you on the 14th!
Sincerely,
Your Former Self
