No because dwarfs don't use any kind of tools to craft objects.

It is presumed all the tools they need are in the workshops  they build.

I always had the assumption that their beards acted as chisels.

Thought it was pretty established by now that they use their beards as tools in most cases.

@ Jaxler: It's sense, not sence. And don't just ask if it makes sense, go and Google it to see if it's actually done IRL.

There is no need to insult my spelling, you understood what I meant. Also it does work in real life and I hoped that someone would tell me there opinion on rather or not it would be fair to have it be in the game and if it would make the game too easy if something like obsidian could be used the same way as glass.

Wasn't insulting you Jaxler, was just pointing it out. And if it is indeed done IRL, i don't see why it would be a problem having it ingame, could act as a low-level trade good if you somehow have access to it early on (near a volcano, etc.).

No because dwarfs don't use any kind of tools to craft objects.

This is about cutting the obsidian itself as a gem (like other types of glass, as it says in the OP).

Anyway, this has already been suggested, as shown by a search for "obsidian gem":

Uncut gems are one of few exhaustible resources in game. This would fix it.

I thought DF already had unlimited gems.  Glass.  As far as obsidian goes; I'm for it being added into the used for decorating items system.  As for it directly being used in the gem cutting step, as a tool.  Nah.  I like not having to worry with more than one crafting subcomponents or a tool.  That would further complicate the crafting game, adding more variables to the chance of a success.  I like having some idea of the odds, if not exact ideas, if I take the time to calculate them.  Hidden odds are sorta, well, a let down for me.  On the other hand, it would be nice to setup high density blackened opal gemstone farms in high altitudes areas with conductive metal bars and purified ash.  The closet chemist in me, wants every elements on the periodic chart represented, in some way.  Except for the synthetic ones, unless there is some kind of alchemical myth behind them.

Sincerely,
Knutor

I thought DF already had unlimited gems.  Glass.

Glass does not count as gem for artifact purporses.

You can use it to train gemcutting and gemsetting, but once mood strikes, you need real gems.
