"Our Tavern Of Mercy" Dorfish hospital.
« on: December 24, 2011, 02:22:31 am »

I've recently embarked in a haunted area. Not the best choice, but a prospecting exhibition found the place was made from pretty much metal ores and flux stone. It's not all that bad, aside from the fact that everybody is almost constantly wounded to some extent. I have set up a basic med-bay, But it's not helping. I was thinking of some idea's to help out, but I was thumbing through the forums, and I realised that maybe this group of sadistic monsters could probably find some form of cruel, yet effective solution.

Execution is a quick, effective way to relieve pain.

And execution by magma is honorable.

Alas, We have neither the supplies or man-power to build some form of magma device.

And executing too large a portion of your populace would prevent you having the labor force to acquire magma management machinery. Can you describe your hospital setup in greater detail? Perhaps some improvements could be made that will get them back on their feet faster.

Rooms?

I usually make one big hospital room. Usually 20x20 or 25x25.

Then it has beds inside, tables, traction benches, and boxes of cloth and thread and crutches and soap and splints.

Once that's done, I dig out a large bedroom and a small dining room and a large food/drink stockpile.

Those four rooms in total become a burrow, to which the Chief Medical Dwarf is confined, so that he always has time to do his work.

Like this. That said, it's the fort's fourth year, and it's not even half done yet, so...

My hospitals, when I build them, are usually extremely compact. Traction Bench-Bed-Table-Bed-Traction Bench-Bed-Table (and so on) means that no patient has to be moved more than one tile from whatever bed they're in to receive treatment.

I fear I may be too much of a slave to aesthetics to be of any help. I postponed building a hospital for several years, because I wanted it to be on the third floor of Gorerape's central keep.
After several unfortunate incidents, I was forced to convert my mayors would-be office into a makeshift emergency room. But even then, I refused to go all out until the keep's third floor was finished.

That said, now that the hospital has actually been completed, I'd say it turned out quite nicely.

Easy to fix.
Lock everyone inside.
They cant get injured if they dont go outside.
And for Food and Drink:
Dig a Channel inside, and designate it a Pit/Pond, then as a Pond.
Then make a Food Storage Area.

Now, its just a matter of sending out a crack bucket brigade and plant gatherer squad from time to time.

Optionally, LOCK THE STUDID, UNRELIABLE CUR DOGS IN CELLS, UNTIL THEY DEVELOP THE DWARVERN INTELLECT NECESSARY TO CONDUCT SIMPLE TASKS, LIKE COMBAT.

Designate legendary butcher as Chief Medical Dwarf.

Turn on all health labours.

Train on gravity migrants.

Butcher is now legendary doctor.

???

Profit.
Also, traction benches adjacent to beds.

Hmmm... that might actually be true..
I mean, its possible to shower a dwarf just enough that they live, but have all their fat burned off (thus becoming fireproof).
I wonder if the  removal of all skin helps with rot too.

This happened to a few of my militia Dwarves, all of their skin melted off and rot began to settle in. Epic medical response ftw, but apparently it is possible to remove all of a Dwarf's skin, and they'll still be able to live normally afterwards... Minus maybe eyesight. Also, I've had a Dwarf drown in magma.
