"I assume that I'll get my family's swords back on arrival if I'm to wander the Plains?"

((Not judge, just Dunbarten's Paladin squad leader))

Yes, yes, after you are deported, said the squad leader distractedly. He waved the female paladin over and started whispering. Zario was able to eavesdrop, and heard:

Go back on your mission, and this time learn what happened, no matter what.
No matter what? Yes. I shall do that.

They broke apart. The female paladin headed out the door; the male paladin chained Zario to post in a jail cell. He informed Zario that he will be teleported to Cean Port and put on a ship that heads to the Maize plains. He then untied him and gave him his pack again. He closed the door and exited.

"Let's hurry on, then."
Donitz looks over the merchants and offers a sympathetic sigh. "Bandits? or worse?"

"WORSE!" shouted a merchant. "A single man felled five of our kind! Were it not for a stone golem, he would have killed us all! A crazy person! Madman!"

Another merchant tapped the first merchant and assured, "We will alert the authorities to him; his face was distinctive, and he had a fancy sword-thing." They both nodded in anticipation of the carrying-out of law.

"H...how did you know? Are you one of those... psi users?"
"I thought those were only in legend-"
"NO! All legends are real!"
"Is not!"
"I swear..."

The merchants started squabbling about the reality or lack thereof legendary persons.

"All of you shut up. I'm not a 'psi' user, I just know who attacked you. Give the authorities his description and tell them to spread it around the towns. If we run across him, I'll try to get back at him. There's a reason to, now."

Donitz nods excitedly and claps his hands. "Give me the details, and I'll compose a nice catchy song about his evil exploits..."

The merchants ignored Griph and talked to Donitz:

"He was a tall man with red hair-"
"He threw firebolts into our carts!"
"He knocked them over!"
"He cut our brothers down with his swords!"
"I'd say he was a devil incarnate!"
"He moved faster than sound-"
"Light!"
"Thought!"
"Cake!"
"He was about to rob us of everything when a big stone golem appeared!"
"It was studded with sapphires!"
"That's when we ran-"
"no, no, no, beated a hasty retreat!"

The mercents were very hyped up, and details were embellished and expanded on.

Donitz nods and jumps up and down, feeding off the merchant's energy as he takes mental notes.

"Very vivid. I can compose something great with this once I get into town. Thanks for your time friends, here's hoping your luck improves. Lets get a move on Griph."

Donitz and Griph redoubled their efforts at reaching Dunbarten in record time.

Eight hours later, the sun was setting. Donitz and Griph now exited the hemmed-in Dugald Alley and entered the Dunbarten Plains. They were on a cobbled road, and Donitz could almost see the city walls. Donitz then suddenly remembered a thought - without passes, they were not allowed to enter after sunset. They both ran to the gates, but were a couple minutes late and were greeted by a portcullis slamming into place.

"Dammit. Lets just set up camp again."

Donitz stays up late and works on composing a song and committing it to memory.

"The Devil incarnate moved faster than sound,
bane of the merchants and scourge of these grounds.
The great monster Zario, had a hunger for flesh,
and decide to introduce a caravan to death.

The wicked swordsman, moved faster than sound.
He firebolted their carts and cut most of them down!
He partook of their flesh and consumed their souls...
Zario's evils truly know no bounds.

The Red haired devil was about to kill them all,
when down from the sky a great golem did fall!
The merchants used the distraction to sound the retreat,
not knowing who would win when rock and devil meet!"

Donitz wrote the new song, along with simple notes, on a scroll he did not knew he had. He just finished it when a spark jumped from his pen to the paper. It sank in and somehow spread out in a wave, changing the paper into some dull metallic color. Donitz felt knowledge trickling into his brain: 'Compose'.

The two went to sleep, in a tent just outside of the city walls.

"Wake up!" A harsh voice, and the sound of someone rapping the pole shook Zario from his sleep. "Get your senses together : its time for you to be deported!"
The unfamiliar man unchained Zario and lead him to a small room. He closed the door behind him and left him alone. The room was barren, with a tiled floor and rough stone walls. After a short while, someone knocked and came in.

The squad leader entered. A short girl with short blond hair, probably no older than 13, bounded in after him. The leader cleared his throat, and said:

Although the procedure is that you are teleported to Cean and placed on a boat, the person we requested was unable to come. Apparently, he was attacked by a black wizard, and he is still recovering from its magical wound attacks. I was ... approached by the Alchemy Research and Development people to offer you the chance for a ... different way of being deported.

You get to be the test group for a new and improved physical transport machine!, the girl practically shouted out enthusiastically.
Its totally safe*, fast** and FUN***!  (*Safe is compared to non-alchemical means of transport via catapult **Fast is compared to mundane ways of crossing the ocean ***Fun is according to a group of people who call themselves Bay12ers)
Tryittryittryit!

The young alchemist looked into Zario's eyes with all the pureness a 12 year old could have.

The clattering of the town's gates awakened Griph and Donitz. The queued up line of travelers were already heading in by the time the two shook off the last vestiges of sleep. They packed up and headed into the town, making their way to the town center. There was a huge amount of merchants with floor mats, and they were peddling all sorts of goods. In one corner of the square was some sort of contraption that looked like it should belong in a city's siege, not a marketplace. It was aligned towards the east.

Zario hated people pestering him like this more than most things, but he wasn't exactly in a great position. He looked at the girl with a snarl and a glare, "Fine! I'll try it! Just stop yelling. Hand me my pack, and I'll go." New and improved... what exactly are they getting him into? Zario didn't want to even think about it.
