Looking pretty good :D Too bad it's a year away. I think Peter Jackson will do good on this.

Dwarves dwarves dwarves songs songs songs!  :D

OTOH, I believe I spied a number of things that deviated from the story, though it has been quite a while since I last read it. Perhaps if I ignore any association between the text and the film I'll enjoy it without nitpicking.

I'm not entirely sure what to think. I am positive it will be an excellent movie, but it seems a bit too similar in tone to the LotR movies to quite fit the Hobbit. Whether or not we will get properly singing Elves, I can't tell. Of course, that it's a trailer makes it even harder to tell - I'm not sure if they're deliberately trying to skew things to draw in people who want more LotR, or if it's an accurate depiction of the movie (in which case it'll be merely a good movie that I will watch repeatedly).

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

DWARVES AND DWARVES AND DWARVES!

Could use more plump helmets though. Def. going to watch. Peter Jackson did a great job on King Kong :P

I honestly wonder how they're going to fit smeagol into this though. And the Dwarves... Ah the Dwarves.

I'll be honest, having the songs correct alone would be enough to warrant multiple theater trips for me. And yeah, I'm really hoping that Peter Jackson will be able to resist the temptation to go for the 'epic' feel, because that would not be fitting at all.

Very valid point. The Hobit was an epic book, and not because of Godly battles. He's going to have to have made an epic film... Without going over the top.

There were plenty of epic parts when Bilbo wasn't around, but that was kind of the point. Smaug's attack on Esgaroth was pretty epic, Bilbo's journey down the river in a barrel was not. They're both important parts of the story, but I can't imagine how he'd make barrel-transport epic.

TBH I liked the Hobbit more than the main trilogy. Mainly because the "treasure hunting" goal was a lot more interesting than the "save the world" goal. You see people saving the world all the time. Beating up dragons and reclaiming mountain kingdoms? Not so often.

Good impressions from the trailer. Looking more "adventure-y" than "epic" to me.

The only thing I'm hoping they don't focus too much on is the 7 army war thing near the end. The climax of the book, for me, is the dragon; once he's gone, it's just filler until the end.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I'm sure he could find a way to make sitting in a basement eating cheetos and screaming into a mic epic, much less a barrel ride in a river.

That was actually one of the things I enjoyed the most; Bilbo was a hero who wasn't The Chosen One, wasn't directly involved in the traditional epic adventure stuff (killing Smaug, the Necromancer's tower, the fight with the goblins in the mines, etc.), making for a rather interesting contrast with what has become part of the standard fantasy setting. I have problems with Tolkien's writing, but many fewer than with the genre and the writers that took the most bland, boring parts of it as the basis of epic fantasy.

This movie is going to be five hours long.

As for the trailer... it's pretty much what I expected? I don't know. It'll probably be great.

This looks quite awesome. I know that everyone dislikes elves, but I want to seem them portrayed like the book does, with singing and pranking. The fact that the dwarves sing looks like a good start.

kaijyuu, I'm pretty sure it was only Five Armies: Humans, Dwarves, Elves, Goblins & Wargs, and then the Eagles at the end.

I've seen a few of the early videos they released and am happy to the trailer now. I'm really looking forward to this. I read The Hobbit a while after a difficult start with reading and it got me properly interested in books.

I'll be honest, having the songs correct alone would be enough to warrant multiple theater trips for me. And yeah, I'm really hoping that Peter Jackson will be able to resist the temptation to go for the 'epic' feel, because that would not be fitting at all.
From what's been said in the earlier videos they released they've tried their best to fit the songs in. I can't wait to here some of them properly performed either.

Does anyone know, by the way, if there are good versions of the songs from LotR or The Hobbit in musical form?

You know, I've always liked the Hobbit better than LOTR

I suddenly remember that I never finished the Hobbit. I read like 3/5 through and then procrastinated picking it back up. Now I have to finish it.
