Strangely, I always smoke before my sets. Somehow it always ends up getting my voice where I want it when I sing.

Not suggesting it, I think it's a pure stylistic thing.

Tips for singing though, make sure you breath through your nose as much as you can. It's crazy how much of a difference that makes. Also sing from your diaphragm, it allows your voice to be powerful without really straining yourself.

What I do to practice, I hum along with notes I'm playing on piano or guitar if I have one available. Otherwise, I hum and try to match up with the pitch on songs I have. Not the vocals, but the instrumental. You should hear it when you get on pitch.
