Lets play: Battletech in MegaMek?
« on: December 20, 2011, 04:09:55 pm »

Hello hello again, everyone;

Theres some time between my WitpAE PBEM turns and I wondered if anyone else is interested in(with or without prior experience) playing some Battletech - and not Mechwarriors or Mechcommanders but the Battletech boardgame itself with a nice little program called MegaMek:

http://megamek.info/

The MegaMek has almost every Battletech rule and ruleset and the rules, maps, mechs and other units can be edited pretty freely. Even comes with a Mechlab program that lets players built their own vehicles, aircraft, naval vessels or Meks, or hybrids, from scratch, in true Battletech style. MegaMek can be even used to play campaigns as the battle results are logged very accurately and data can be imported and exported in another program.

I have given a quick try to multiplayer and to much of surprise it actually seems to work. What do you guys think?

I love me some MegaMek. Have you looked into MegaMekNET? It's a parallel project that runs a persistent "campaign" and arranges matchmaking, generates semi-random maps, etc.

I haven't played in a good while, but back when I did it used factions to steer you toward "canonical" mech choices, and generate "missions" which had a small but tangible part in determining overall progress. (Like, a lance on lance battle might be part of a larger planetary invasion, and your victory might move the overall victory counter 0.5% closer)

I imagine they've added a fair bit of functionality since then.

Hmm....

It looks like many of the BT forums have been dead for a while now, but some seem to be very active. If they're still publishing books and new stuff it cant be going anywhere but I'm just in the wrong part of the Internet.

I'd certainly be interested in playing some small scenarios, say, max 10 vs 10 or so, online, in a campaign or separate scenarios.

Checked on MegaMekNET, it's dead, but regular MegaMek seems to be active still.

I'm can play fine, still just getting used to all the little variables. If you wanna get a campaign going, i'd be glad to hop in.

Here's what I have checking my MegaMek/btech bookmarks:

Active:
http://bg.battletech.com/forums/ - official site, rules questions
http://www.dropshipcommand.com forums
http://www.mektek.net - forums, sw for MW4 (and free MW4)
http://www.mekwars.org/  for mekwars and MegaMekNet  (lots more recent versions than on sourceforge)
http://megamek.info/ - megamek home
http://megamek.info/mekhq - AI and campaign stuff for MegaMek, "Where to Play" points to forums and Campaigns

Campaign Tracker:
http://banshee.mekwars.net/mwtracker
Campaigns, all seem active:
http://mekwarsforever.freeforums.org
http://www.clanhomeworlds.net/  -sif,s7,chw campaigns, forums down right now
http://homepage.hispeed.ch/barracodoladob/index.html  -"the shack"

EDIT: Although yea, it looks like "MekWars" is the new name of the server software instead of MegaMekNet: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mekwars/
Setting up a campaign looks like a fairly big effort though: http://www.mekwars.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6074
But mekHQ from http://megamek.info/mekhq  looks like the easy way to track mechs between a few MegaMek battles, I tried a very early version of this and it was decent, a few years of improvements should make it pretty cool...

I've now played the MekWars in the 3025 campaign some and I've been positively surprised, both by the community there and that I've not been completely annihilated yet. Of course I've lost all 6 of my online battles, but at least 4 of them were very close calls and with some patience, luck and/or skill I could have won them, and at least delayed losing in 2 others.

I'm on the same one, Erkki.

If you happen to see "Serithi", that's me :P.
