noob question
« on: December 20, 2011, 03:58:02 pm »

I am not new to DF adven mode but I really havent looked at much info on how things work in adven mode. Question is does it matter what type of material weapons and armor is? (I already know that cloth armor isn't as good as metal armor which is pretty obvious)
So is a copper sword gonna be as good as an iron one?

Generally speaking silver/copper < bronze/iron < steel. Some exceptions apply, like blunt weapons being pretty decent against armoured foes regardless of material. Against edged attacks, the benefit of having higher quality armour is enourmous. Copper sword's edge simply isn't much good against full suit steel armour.

While clothes are generally pretty meh, large heavy pieces of clothing (cloaks and robes most notably, IIRC) can deflect light attacks like punches and bites from most man sized and smaller creatures.

Thanks that helped alot, but what about things like gold and platinum? One time I found a platinum sword in a dragon minotaur lair. I also know of other materials for weapons like admanitile and electium. (sorry for spelling but I cant spell those words.)

Heavy precious metals (platinium, gold, silver and their various alloys inc. electrum) are good for blunt weapons, but not much else. Similarily adamantite, being very light, isn't any good for blunt weapons though it's still the best for edged ones and armour (though actually getting an adamantine weapon in adventurer mode without dwarf mode assistance is quite a feat).

In dwarf fortress, materials have detailed properties and behave very similarly to real life. Gold is heavy but soft, making for great blunt weapons but crap edged weapons and armor.

And platinum is actually a decent metal:

Platinum is pretty decent for all weapons. Very good for blunt, better than copper for edged.

You forgot to mention that it's artifact, so it gets x10 or more attack and damage.

that hasn't been true since the materials rewrite; no, all that artifacts get now is a (compared to standard) 3x more likely chance to hit.
