How come notch can code a game better then most portable games I have ever played in 48 hours, yet it took him ages to get even the simplest updates out for Minecraft?

It absolutely blows my mind :O

I think the popularity of Minecraft created a lot of pressure on him. He seemed to be having a lot of fun with the game and updating often until it got so much recognition. This minigame is pretty fun. :)

Because the world is not a simple place and everyone forgets about all of the other stuff he was busy with.

You know, like setting up a company, designing other games, having an office space assembled for months for some reason and hiring new employees.

And yeah, he is incredibly skilled at churning out content under pressure. Keeping with a project doesn't seem like something he has had a lot of experience with.

IIRC he is still hiring new employees, setting up a company, and working on Scrolls.

Hmm... has anyone found any iron or gold? I've made everything else and tried mining through a bunch of stone and haven't found anything. So far the only indication I can find of that wizard you're supposed to beat is a stairway walled off with stone I can't mine through with a stone pick.

Edit: Oh dammit. I found some stairs down (presumably to where you find the metals) but it was dark and I got mauled to death before I got my lantern out.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

I hate to be this contradictory, but the idea that any of that "kept him too busy to work on Minecraft" is complete and utter bullshit.
The popularity went to his head, and he got lazy.

No, he's not.  See every update he's promised ever.  He waits until the last minute and does as little of the originally-promised content as he can get away with, throwing the rest under the rug.
He's good at speed-writing, but that doesn't mean he can churn out content.

(Side-note: Mojang, a new company?  Bullshit.  It existed nine years ago.  Notch was just as lazy then as he is now.  He left his spot on Wurm Online because it got into a very similar state as Minecraft is now.)

Sometimes I wonder how people are so blinded as to his nature.  He doesn't make any attempts to hide it.

Maybe it's parasitic. It never loses its flavor because you eventually die from having your nutrients stolen by it.

Typical fanboyism.  People get competitive about liking something, to the point where they deify the creator of said thing despite obvious flaws.  A side effect is that people band together, making 'not liking' this something openly a bad idea in some cases.

Not to mention that Notch's 'work ethic' is pretty much identical to that of his loyal fans so they probably don't even notice.

I like Minicraft though, it's fun.  I died after I discovered mountains have stairs in them.

I have to agree. Notch has be deified, without a doubt.

Bulllllllllllshiiiiiiiii-

I would appreciate not simplifying my position to a straightforward irrational stereotype thanks. This is a position I do not exclusively have with Notch but with indie game developers in general, which people perpetually shit on for not reaching whatever bullshit expectations they have. Any vice I have over this is just a direct extension of how I feel about Toady. It's a difficult thing to constantly do a project that is no longer just for fun but a requirement for fans who want updates done to a specific frequency on top of content. They will get it out when they get it out. I thought this was our agreement with indie game devs.

I also defend his ability to churn out stuff under pressure because I'm looking at the subject matter at hand, 24-48 hour quick game challenges as opposed to just Minecraft. All of his challenge quick games and side projects have been pretty well polished and do what they aim to do in their short development time.

I'm kinda glad there isn't a term for a reverse fanboy because I would just look like a trite dick spouting it everywhere.

See? Sorta like that.

I was talking about fanboys that deify Notch despite his tweets and blogs which make him look like an average, somewhat intelligent guy that is in over his head making video games and owning a company/money. I never said he made a *bad* game, I love Minecraft, I just think he isn't as supercalifragilisticexpialidicious as quite a few of his fans (and the media) claim him to be. He's probably still kinda super I suppose.

I'm really sorry if you felt personally attacked.

Well maybe this classifies as having a similar work ethic, but i'm not a fanboy of him (i barely played minecraft), yet i understand how hard it is to keep your motivation for a project on the long term.
