If we could get away from the whole "fanbois suck/no u" thing for a minute?

Am I supposed to be able to build/place walls in this? I can't find a crafting option for it and you can't seem to place wood.

You can plant acorns for trees and dig trenches that monsters can't cross. Water flows into trenches. Thats about it.

 After wandering in some mines for a while and removing three deserts making lanterns I wonder how one finds gold and gems. All I find is death iron.

Can you deconstruct the workbench (like 'in real life')?  When I've started a little megaproject for safe material gathering (prior to venturing underground) I've ended up having to do a lot of walking backwards and forwards, and I don't want to keep coming up to the surface when I finally get it lit down there...

You can build a new workbench, or carry the existing one.

My adventures go well, but I still haven't found any gold or gems yet. Pity I can't seem to use this iron to craft armor.

@Starver: Use the Pow glove to pick stuff up again that you've placed.

I'm at the iron stage, apparently staying alive means farming bread. I'm not there yet but i think that gold and gems appear at lower levels (i saw a screenshot of a "3rd level" with MAGMA). So... Dig Deeper©

 Is this via stairs you can find but I could not or the pits you can walk through?

Pits are more like trenches in WWII grunge warfare.  Stairs are more like mine shafts, going down MUCH further.  Pits just encumber movement, it's the stairs that take you places.

the only thing that i found annoying is that you can't build fortifications. so i holed myself in the mountain with trees

After dying a lot, i finally decided to cheat and gave myself infinite health and energy. Turns out, you just need to get gold at the 2nd level, then gems at the 3rd level, make a gem pickaxe, destroy the special wall around the stairs somewhere in the surface, find the boss and kill him. Honestly, without cheating it would have taken many many deaths to do that, so i'm glad i did it this way.
