Insofar as it makes sense to talk about refreshing an enchantment at all, yes. Most enchantments last as long as you focus on them, and the rest last only an instant. Take a repairing spell, for example. Once you've bewitched the tools, they go on fixing for as long as you focus on what you want fixed and then fall to the ground as soon as you stop focusing. Summoning, on the other hand, lasts just as long as it takes for the spell to bring you what you want.

Objects can be made that are permenently enchanted, forever bewitched to do as you wanted when you made it, but that takes alchemy. It's one of the things you hope to learn.

So is summoning a "summon familiar for some time" spell, or a "come over here, hat!" spell?

Also sad that nobody wants a dust mite. Someday I shall take over the world with my army of giant illuminated dust mites, and then you'll all be sorry that you didn't agree with me on a forum game! Though to be honest it would probably be easier to make a lesser lesser water elemental than a dust mite, since you don't have to worry about teeny organs and whatnot. Does this mean I change my vote? I don't know.

It's more of a "come over here, hat!" spell.

If you think of enchantments as being able to move and/or temporarily animate objects, rather than as crafting a magic sword you'll have a much better idea of how it works.

Silly thought - boomerang with summoning enchantment. Either redundant or genius, I'm not sure which. Could also go for a little metal man that walks over to us, though I get the feeling even a teeny one would be hard for us to control.

The next day, you get out of the crate you were sleeping in and wonder how it came to this.

Against your beter judgement, you decided to forgo the cauldron you were instructed to craft and make a sword instead. Copper, but perfectly servicable. It has a little knob on the pommel and everything. Your would-be master wasn't exactly pleased with your choice and didn't even ask to see your water summoning spell, which, by the way, you're certain you can do properly now. Instead, he kicked you out, first figuratively then literally. You slept in an alley last night and your back is still sore from it.

It's not all bad, though. You still have Steward. You could try learning alchemy on your own somehow, or maybe convince some other alchemist to take you on. Maybe.

Lock yourself up in someone's basement and experiment on any living thing you find.

By far the most crazy alchemist in the city is Mad Old Yuif, an unruly looking foreign fellow who started living under the bridge ages ago. He fishes and drinks out of the Thames, but since he isn't dead yet, he must be doing something right alchemically speaking. It's not too hard to find the fellow, either, you just need to look for the fellow chopping fish with a silver butter knife and wearing the bright blue hat. Before you even get a chance to speak, he turns around, looks you over and proclaims, "Avast! A new apprentice for Mad Old Yuif! And just in time for tea! Go fill this kettle and I'll look into finding us a scone or two."

You head down to the river, take one look at it and turn around. It's filthy. Summoning charm it is. You're not entirely sure where the water came from, probably from a rain barrel someplace, but you've got yourself a full kettle now. A kettle that Yuif made you poor out. Le sigh. It seems the crazy old man wanted water out of the Thames.

When you get back with the filthy water, you find Yuif grinding fish bones into powder. He has you sprinkle the bone dust into the kettle and then put it on to boil. "Important lesson there, you know. Alchemy works best if you make all the ingredients and tools yourself. Too many cooks'll soil the tea and what not." As he says this, he sorts through some tins of questionable looking biscuits. "I'm going to go catch lunch. You sort through that box over there and pick out some spare change. Head to the market and get some vegetables or something. Come back when the tea's ready."
