Numpad-less bindings?
« on: December 19, 2011, 01:33:28 am »

I've decided to return to DF, but I'm on a laptop, and will be for the foreseeable future.

The problem is that, you know, laptop. So before I manually redo all the controls- Does anyone have a decent setup for keybindings that doesn't use the numpad that I could crib?

EDIT: Actually, which number pad keys are actually used by DF, beyond +, -, * and /?

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then you kill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.

I think in Fortress Mode that should cover it, but Adventure Mode has the diagonal movement keys to consider.

personally, I could never get used to left = z-down and right= z-up. I change those to pageup and pagedown.

Just buy a USB numpad. A $10 or less one will work fine.

Seconding the USB numpad suggestion, although the one I bought had a really doughy action that I didn't like.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I play on a laptop too, one with a numeric keypad, but I'm just too used to my old drive mappings from when I played on a laptop without.

I use F1 and F2 for the secondary moving up and down, and F3 and F4 for secondary paging up and down.

Then I remapped F5 and F6 for zooming in and out.

Last thing I did was remap the functions that F1-F6 did (hotkeys) to F7. After all, hotkeys, right?

Also you may notice that I like still prefer space over ESC, so that's in there too.

The changes are like so:

[BIND:ZOOM_IN:REPEAT_SLOW]
[SYM:0:F5]
[BIND:ZOOM_OUT:REPEAT_SLOW]
[SYM:0:F6]

[BIND:LEAVESCREEN:REPEAT_NOT]
[SYM:0:Space]
[BIND:LEAVESCREEN_ALL:REPEAT_NOT]
[SYM:1:Space]

[BIND:SECONDSCROLL_UP:REPEAT_SLOW]
[KEY:F1]
[BIND:SECONDSCROLL_DOWN:REPEAT_SLOW]
[KEY:F2]
[BIND:SECONDSCROLL_PAGEUP:REPEAT_SLOW]
[KEY:F3]
[BIND:SECONDSCROLL_PAGEDOWN:REPEAT_SLOW]
[KEY:F4]

You don't really need a USB numpad, I played DF with no numpad for years.

I like to rebind the up/down keys to , and . instead of < and >. Doesn't really have anything to do with the numpad, I just hate having to hold down shift whenever I do that.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Edit: DOH! Wrong laptop thread!

Whatever you get, get it with an Intel processor, not AMD.

I play on a HP Probook 4710s, Win XP Prof with 3Gig of RAM. It has an Intel Centrino.

I then tested my fort out on a new HP ProBook 6555b, Win7Prof, 4Gb RAM but an AMD Dual Core 2.3GHz processor.

The fort ran just about twice as fast on the older Intel box than the newer AMD (40+ FPS versus 20+ FPS).
