Difficult to tell, given the cult of personality thing.

As far as they know they lost a national hero deity.
Fixed.

This is somewhat akin to a Pharonic death. I'm curious if the state media is going to mythologize it somehow as Kim Jong Il ascending to the heavens in a higher form, and leaving his now-divine son as the earthly protector of the Korean people, a la the Osiris-Ra cycle.

Also curious if they're going to cremate him, or stuff him and put him on display like they did Lenin and Mao. Sounds like a job for Chuck Testa.

Kim Il Sung is said to not really be dead by some of his most faithful, merely resting, he is after all an immortal god king.

This is a very good thing, 1 less Commie we have to deal with.

Kim Jong Il was a communist in name only. A real communist would have returned the vast majority of the wealth generated by his nation back to the people in the form of social services and infrastructure. Il was a kleptocrat and theocrat with himself playing the role of Jesus (the son of god with magical powers and the sole source of good in the minds of his followers).

As to his associations with Jesus, it should be noted that Kim Jong Il had not only a star in the sky but a miraculous double rainbow to announce his birth, which is a strong indication to my mind that he may have been the Gay Jesus, a spin off development from the early bible franchise that never really brought in the ratings and then got rerun in North Korea. Of course there are those who believe that he was the result of an American attempt  during the height of the Korean war to reincarnate Jesus (and thereby provide an on-the-cheap magic jesus powers election winning victory) that was interfered with by the North via the application of pink kriptonite. But I fail to see how they could have got a hold of a fictional substance.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Only thing I will miss is the entertaining blog dedicated to pictures of him looking at things.

We have lost one of the best ba...

erm...

we have lost a basketball player on Earth.

See, when Osama Bin Laden died, I could honestly say that we had lost one of the world's best volleyball players. Not with this guy.

Anything changing?  On the ground or in the world scope of things?  Depends how much crazier or saner his son is... even then, that depends on how much control he has compared to the current 'administration'.
Do they try to uplift the successor to the 2nd great leader/jesus?  Probably.  Will that be successful this time around?  I don't see why not, but I don't know the internal happenings.

Either way, it is 'easier' to try to keep the status quo.  Making changes when you are uncertain of the outcome tends not to happen in places like this.  Its a time when you most want stability because of the transition now happening.

Nobody really knows what is going on in there, so it may or may not.  The big possibilities I've heard are:
A) His son takes power, North Korea blows up something unimportant to prove they're still crazy, and things generally go on as normal (probable)
B) One of their higher-ups tries to use the power vacuum to take control over the country (don't know how likely this is)
C)Kim Jong-un is less crazy than Dear Leader, and actually allows the country to move forward in some fashion

Also, apparently the DPRK has a subreddit.  It might just be trolling, but they seem pretty serious about it.  They go through comments on posts about North Korea and ban anyone who says anything bad about them.

It's trolling. The subreddit's only real user is "Kim-Il Sung", and he's dead.

And here I was about to go on it and fulfil rule 85.

Kim Jung Il supposedly bowled a 300 on his first attempt.
