Either we'll have a single Korea in five years, or we'll have a North Korea even more brutal than the last. And, honestly, I suspect it'll be the latter. Just because Kim Jong-un was educated in the West doesn't mean anything. You need the ideological conviction of a Yang Wenli to give up a private fiefdom, and since the guy's been groomed for the job over the past several years I doubt it'll happen.

However, if he does give it up, then I will believe that the world's leaders still have their fair share of Good Men among them.

We could have BOTH a single korea and a north korea more brutal than Il's north korea.
The US would go to war with NK before that happens, at least that is my belief.
Yes, that's what I'm afraid off.

If I recall correctly, the US still has a pact with South Korea to fight with them in any conflict against North Korea.

China isn't looking for a war with SK (and by proxy their prime customer, the US), that's for sure. They don't even really like NK that much anymore, but they're really the only country that talks to them.

North Korea is one of their satellite states, just like Burma. I don't think they'll consent to an US invasion.

I dont think they'll readily let the new Dear Leader do something rash, either

It may be a satellite state, but they know damn well that the junta's in both Myanmar and North Korea are batshit insane. If they ever try something that would directly harm Chinese interest (like, I don't know, start a war?) then don't look surprised if the Junta 'accidentally disappears due to an unfortunate accident'

I think there're three primary reasons China is backing NK, at least superficially.

1: Prestige.
2: They don't want a US-allied united Korea at their borders.
3: If the NK regime collapses, watch as North Koreans will try to get across the chinese border by the 100000's. It's not like they're not already trying, but soldiers are keeping them in.

Pretty sure China sees NK only as a source of problems these days though. Doesn't help that one of NK's main sources of income these days is smuggling drugs to Chinese cities.

The SK-US relationship is a lot stronger than the NK-PRC relationship is. Hell, the US-PRC relationship is stronger than the NK-PRC relationship. That's why I think it's pretty likely that China will cut their losses and let Korea unify under SK unopposed if NK tries something.

Well, but odes SK really want to gooble NK? It'll be dozens of time worse than the DDR/FDR merge-up.

R.I.P
Kim Jong Il.

I will have to make fun of someone else. :(

Is anyone else worried about what North Korea's going to do in 2012?
I mean, they've already said that they're going to have some HFS in store for SK, I mean...

They crazy.

Heres hoping there isn't another Korean Civil war. Then again, a United Korea may be better then we all think it may be. I won't say the nukes are going to fly, but the American Government would need to get over its extremely jingoistic Policies (Millions military bases everywhere, doing... what, exactly ow that the USSR is gone?). If you start hearing the American Government threatening NK, I would start building yer Nuclear Bunkers if I were you.
