Shine on, you crazy diamond. I actually heard on the radio on the way into work this morning. Cue coffee spit-take.

2011 was a bad year for Bond villains -- Osama, Gaddafi and now Lil' Kim?
Who's left:
Ahmedinejad? He's all bark, no bite. Besides, he's not even the real power in Iran.
Fidel? Not in power, and he's mellowed in his old age.
Islam Karimov? He's a right bastard, but there's no style there -- he's just a brutal despot. Plus, we're cozying back up with him now that we need alternate supply routes into Afghanistan.
Ayman al-Zawahiri? Maybe, but we haven't been seeing threatening videos from him, and AQ has been pretty quiet for the most part outside of the Pakistani NWFP.

I also thought it was ironic that he died within a day of Vaclav Havel, who was almost the total and utter opposite of a Bond villain.

Putin's not sociopathic enough. Yet. He does have the whole bare-chested-fighter-pilot-hunts-bears-with-his-bare-hands vibe going on, though. He'd make a better prime henchman than a villain.

Wasn't familiar with Kadyrov. He's got potential, but he's a puppet president for Putin. (luv dat alliteration)

There's still Robert Mugabe, but he's only killing black people so he doesn't have the world's attention.  </snark>

There's also Lukashenko in Belarus, but he just doesn't have the stone-cold-crazy thing going on. It's no problem finding iron-fisted strongmen in the world. It's finding the iron-fisted strongmen that are wacky enough to have a bevy of supermodel assassin bodyguards, or have people worship giant statues of them, or banning gold teeth and urging your citizens to gnaw bones to strengthen their teeth instead (RIP Saparmurat Niyazov...your crazy-ass villainy was cut short before your time)

So.

I'm thinking a short lived N. Korea civil war. Then China swoops in as their 'big brother', to stabilized the region, and BAM, we have another Hong Kong. Whose with me?

Good to hear, man. I remember you seeming sad before you went away, and what with darkness coming and winter depressions and me always assuming the worst... Well, I wondered about you.

I worried you might've been killed in obe of the butter riots too. I hear they were very wild.

I think it's going to be business as usual in N. Korea. Kim Jong Un had already been fixed in place as heir apparent. He's young and inexperienced, so he'll rely more on the generals of the army for support, but there's enough of them that I don't see a coup or a single general trying to overthrow Kim. Plus, the population has been so indoctrinated to see the Kim family as the natural rulers of Best Korea, so I doubt they'd accept a non-Kim taking the throne graciously (then again, what are they going to do...refuse to starve?)

There will be a little bit of saber-rattling by the North (already they've conducted a short-range missile test), just to say "Okay, Papa Crazy Hair might be gone, but that doesn't mean we're not still badass! You wanna a piece of us? Huh? Do you? Yeah, didn't think so...punk."

What I'm wondering is that with Jong Un being so young, he might be more pliable. If there's a decent number of non-crazy people in the General Staff of the Army, they might be able to sway him towards reconciliation with the outside world. Alternately, he might feel he has something to prove and be even more ardently belligerent than Dad was (kinda like how Scott Evil was actually more dangerous than Dr. Evil).

Either we'll have a single Korea in five years, or we'll have a North Korea even more brutal than the last. And, honestly, I suspect it'll be the latter. Just because Kim Jong-un was educated in the West doesn't mean anything. You need the ideological conviction of a Yang Wenli to give up a private fiefdom, and since the guy's been groomed for the job over the past several years I doubt it'll happen.

However, if he does give it up, then I will believe that the world's leaders still have their fair share of Good Men among them.

We could have BOTH a single korea and a north korea more brutal than Il's north korea.

South Koreans will revolt. And there's more of them, and unlike North Korea, they could have all the arms they wished from the West.

The US would go to war with NK before that happens, at least that is my belief.
The US has a few military bases in that area, like Japan, just in case Best Korea goes berserk and probably to 'contain' China... among many other reasons to be there.

"GO"? We are already at war with North Korea and have been for decades. We have no formal peace treaty, only a cease fire that North Korea routinely violates.

Technicalities, but yes, there would be fighting when it comes to it.
