The world lost a great golfer.  The guy could score a hole in one on all 18 holes, that's how skilled he was.

Gotta love any country who's border guards have more work keeping people from leaving than entering...

Nope. Wrong.

They have more trouble dragging people into their borders than keeping people from leaving.

How many of them do you think were paid/coerced into grieving for him? Because some of those people seemed to be behaving just a little too melodramatic.

Difficult to tell, given the cult of personality thing.

As far as they know they lost a national hero.

When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Fixed.

This is somewhat akin to a Pharonic death. I'm curious if the state media is going to mythologize it somehow as Kim Jong Il ascending to the heavens in a higher form, and leaving his now-divine son as the earthly protector of the Korean people, a la the Osiris-Ra cycle.

Also curious if they're going to cremate him, or stuff him and put him on display like they did Lenin and Mao. Sounds like a job for Chuck Testa.

Well, Kim Il Sung is in embalmed in a glass coffin, so I guess they'll stor Kim Jong Il in a glass coffin as well.

...actually, he might have been the LAST Commie we had to deal with. Seriously, Communism is virtually dead outside of North Korea. And I'm not even sure what they have there qualifies.

Kim Il Sung is said to not really be dead by some of his most faithful, merely resting, he is after all an immortal god king.

Kim Jong Il was a communist in name only. A real communist would have returned the vast majority of the wealth generated by his nation back to the people in the form of social services and infrastructure. Il was a kleptocrat and theocrat with himself playing the role of Jesus (the son of god with magical powers and the sole source of good in the minds of his followers).

Good point. By their own admission, their ideology was Juche, which is sort of a Stalinist autarky (i.e. we will produce everything we need internally and shun external trade). Which is extremely difficult for even a large country blessed with many resources. In the case of a small, resource-poor state like North Korea....well, there's a reason they've been in perpetual famine for years now.
