Well, the Marshfolk and the Shark Clan are at war and we can surely work something out in regards of a Pantheon. You bring in the food and i bring in the Weapons XDD

Now if only there was any iron in the marshlands.

The British at ancient times got their iron from the swamps.

I was actually mad about something, but I came up with the wrong thing.

I'm mad because it's been 100 years and we jumped from the stone age, to the iron age.  Bronze age I could understand, since they were in the stone age before we came along.

Not to mention we're not even in the "build houses" stage.  How are you going to make iron without a bloomery?  Were working at advancements in a strange pattern.

It's gonna be, people stop moving around to build a bloomery, which is made of Hewn stone, which we don't have yet, all we have are hafted tiny rocks.  We don't even have clay pots yet.  Hell does everyone even have fire?  I assume so. AND I'M RAMBLING.

Here's me being a windrider.

Iron?  I don't even know what that is.  So I melt it?  Okay how hot?  That's really freaking hot!  A bloomery?  Like a big tent gotcha.. wait not a tent?  Made of stone?  That's a lot of stone!  I wouldn't even know were to begin getting that stone let alone crafting such a structure, how would I move it with me when we follow the hunt?  I wouldn't, so I just have to stay here and starve? scavenging for berries?  Okay I built the structure, now give me the iron ore.  What? I have to mine it?  I just mined a bunch of stone, and also I'm starving!  There it took me forever but I found some of the ore you spoke of, now what do I do with it? Okay so I put it in there.. gotcha...  wait what do you mean I ruined it!? Fine I'll try again, AAAH MY HANDS!!!  Leather gloves?  What THE HELL IS LEATHER, can I eat it? CAUSE I'm tired of eating there berries, and I've run out of them anyway!  Rawhide? Yes I know how to make that, and I do what with it?  That's disgusting!  Okay I've made the leather, how do I make gloves?  actually what are gloves?  like a loincloth for your hands?  *makes something that's not even remotely like a glove* there perfect!  Still really hungry.  Farming?  I what?  seeds?  okay sounds good!  *plants seeds* okay were is my food!?  HOW LONG!?

I'm I the only one who sees the problem?

I think Iituem, in his infinite wisdom, will probably think up a way to deal with it.

Although, Ghazkull, if you changed it to copper, that would probably help. Copper can literally be found lying around ready to be hammered into shape- it makes for a much more plausible advancement.

Yeah that would be significantly better.

or you know, don't tell them and they'll figure it out themselves.

ok ...fine  Copper then...but if we are talking about reality: Werewolves and Vampires, i think your rambling about technology realism is made moot (mood?) by the entrance of such creatures. They might still be living somewhat nomadic but i don't see a problem  with them leaving those bloomeries along their migration routes...but alas i will bend my will to the Masses...

Hey woah no dude

It's up to Iituem in the end. You seriously want to try for iron, we can't force you not to.

I wasn't telling him he couldn't, other players have told people things they couldn't comprehend and the knowledge was lost, there is no foundation for the knowledge of iron working, they wouldn't be able to comprehend it.

Turn will be up tomorrow, as I have a day off.

Advanced technologies are tricky.  As a god, you are within your rights to give one of your followers an AK-47 and several crates of ammunition (1 Act).  This will give them quite a bit of a short-term advantage - until it breaks or they run out of ammunition.  You could train them to clean and repair it, and even to make new bullets (2 Acts)... except that you need the pre-requisite understanding of Chemistry or Alchemy (4 Acts) to produce the Gunpower (5 Acts) (let alone smokeless power) to put in bullets, nor the smelting or metalworking techniques necessary to produce the metal for the bullets (6 Acts) - or the mining technology to acquire a reasonable supply of ore to smelt (7 Acts).  Or even the Farming technology to produce potash for the powder (8 Acts).

And then, let's say you gave them blueprints for the AK-47 (and the power to interpret them) - they then have a fully working understanding of how to build one.  Even if you give them all the materials, they lack the machine tools to actually work the materials to the high level of precision (and a machine gun requires rather precise machining indeed) necessary to create a gun that doesn't blow up the first time you use it (9+ Acts, plus all foundation technologies for precise machine tools).

That was a fairly excessive example to prove my point.  I mentally label (and will probably officially label, soon) technologies by tier.  Bronze Working is a Tier 2 technology.  T2 techs depend on T1 techs to be developed - T1s are fairly elemental and can be learned off the bat (i.e. Fire, Fishing, Mining).

What does Bronze Working need?  Fire is a definite (though fire is sort of a T0 tech), because you need it for smelting (T1/T2).  You can gather native copper from the surface (free) in limited supply, but you need to mine either native copper or ore (Mining, T1), and ore you need to smelt as well.  Alternatively you can use Metalworking (T1) to just beat native copper and other native metals (silver, gold) into jewellery, weapons, tools and kitchenware, or develop Forging (T1) to work heavier duty items (e.g. shields, furniture etc).

The other requirements for bronze are access to both copper and tin - which are rarely found in the same region.  Thus, a network of Trade (T1) is probably needed unless you settle in an ideal location (e.g. Clockspire, the True Mountain/Island) or control enough territory to have access to both regardless - which will require a type of government more stable and far-reaching than tribalism (T1?).  One does not necessarily need a more stable type of government than tribalism - but it will help and if it doesn't exist already, there's a good chance one will be formed as a result.

So, to bring about Bronze Working we need: Fire (T0), Smelting (T1), Mining (T1), Metalworking/Forging (T1), Trade/Better Government Type (T1).  That's 3-4 technologies required, minimum, just to get access to Bronze - to say nothing of making it into weaponry or other useful items (Armoury, Weaponsmithy - T2, principally from Forging).

All this means to say that as far as the hidden mechanics I use to determine mortals actions is concerned - when Bronze finally does arrive, it will arrive with very great significance indeed.  Probably more significance than if you had just given them the machine gun.

I wasn't telling him he couldn't, other players have told people things they couldn't comprehend and the knowledge was lost, there is no foundation for the knowledge of iron working, they wouldn't be able to comprehend it.

Half right, though it's primarily due to my poor explanation.  The reason the characters couldn't comprehend is that people tried to give multiple techs with a single Minor Act - which is a no-no.  I gave the NPCs a chance to work out one of the suggested techs as a freebie, but that carried the risk of critical failure (which would give them a fear of innovation for a couple of turns).

Using an Act to accomplish something may not always get you what you intended, but it will usually get you something (though depending on what you do, it might not be something pleasant).

ok ...fine  Copper then...but if we are talking about reality: Werewolves and Vampires, i think your rambling about technology realism is made moot (mood?) by the entrance of such creatures. We certainly won't be slavishly following the development of technology on Earth - the very existence of magic as a (semi-)reliable and usable force in Balin will significantly chance the technology tree and how things are achieved.  However, technological development has to make sense, thus a tech tree (of sorts, more a tech pyramid) will be developed as we go along to justify not only how certain techs are learned - but how they are maintained.  Infrastructure is as important as knowledge.

e.g. If you carve the knowledge for Bronze Working onto a tablet for all time, but the people are not ready to learn it, your Act will grant them one of the base techs automatically, but even if they can understand the tech they may not have the infrastructure to do it automatically.  On the other hand, the tablet will give them a chance each turn of learning the rest of the other base techs automatically from it.  (This does not apply if a tech is so far advanced that they cannot comprehend it - give them the machine gun schematics and they'll probably just fall down and worship it as holy gibberish.)

On the other hand, this will probably get easier once you upgrade from Minor Acts to Lesser Acts (you need to get >5 Acts/turn to do this).

Speaking of which, I'll be interested in hearing thoughts about the use, limitations and applicability of the nine different types of magic (the four Elemental, the three Psychic, Life(/Death) and Time(/Change)).  I'll say off the bat that the basic power source for all magics is Essence - the same divine essence that gives power to the Gods and gave form to the Titans.

I will also say off the bat that Essence pools in forms other than deities - it flows along the Leylines, it accumulates in the right sort of materials, it grows and multiplies in living (especially sapient beings)... and it can be destroyed and even decay under the wrong conditions.  Within the world of Balin, Essence is woven into every living thing - destroying the Essence within it will have unpleasant effects upon the being itself, as will simply ripping it out.

So, things to think about:

1) Power sources.  The simplest way right now is finding a ley line or ley point (place where lines converge) and drawing magic there and then for doing spells.  Effective, but it leads to a geographical limitation and has effects on the world (as we have seen from geomancy) if not properly balanced.  What other power sources come to mind?  Sacrifices (drawing power from beings)?  Accumulating it slowly in crystals and then expending it?

2) Applicability.  What can the magics be used for on both a general and day-to-day scale?
  • A strong enough geomancer could raise a mountain.  Could he raise a wall?  Plough a field?  Would it be easier to do than just ploughing it by hand?
  • Can an aquamancer desalinate seawater or bring rain?
  • Can a Dunamancer (power mage) empower the muscles and speed of a soldier, or take away the weariness of a pilgrim?  Can he bring weakness or fatigue as well?
  • Can an Alkamancer (courage mage) reduce fear or bolster bravery, or temper the fear of wild beasts to tame them - or to make them easier to kill?  Can he induce fear or sow doubt and distrust as well?
  • Can a Sophomancer (wisdom mage) provide insight into troubled times, sharpen thoughts, or cure headaches and diseases of the mind?  Can he cloud sight and dull the brain, or even imbue insanity as well?
  • Can a Biomancer heal wounds and grow crops, can he help animals grow up health - and can be he a Necromancer as well?  Can he rot flesh and wither fields, sow plagues or even just be used for hunting?
  • If a Chronomancer controls Change/Motion as well as time, can he animate a statue?  Would animating a corpse be easier?  Can he slow or speed time, increase reaction speeds or slow projectiles?  Can he control the rate of corrosion or reaction?  How can this power be applied on a day-to-day scale?

Just some things to think about and suggest.  I'll have to balance this eventually, after all.

I figured when a Geomancer has no access to Essence then their abilites would draw directly from their physical energy, and then their life force. Thus making it very dangerous to use in certain places.

As for the wall, and field question. A wall would be much easier is they are simply pulling earth up, and into a solid form. Plowing would be extremely difficult, and something only a Geomancer with great powers could do, as it is extremely small scaled, and very detailed.

*snip (not the magic post)*

We should probably stop hand holding the windriders, they're big boys we don't have to teach them ANYTHING, they'll figure it out themselves, or at least that's my and Jilganhiems point of view.

Also what's the cost of producing god offspring (Athena, Hermes, etc), demigods (Hercules), etc.

Since I've (Jilganhiem) lost Most of my (his) faith in humanity.. windriderity?  They need a more direct less descriptive name.. or a different term for humanity.  Or just humanity that works too.  Lost track of what I was getting at, so yeah I'm gonna go hide in the woods and makes some daughters.

Now that I think about it, they would simply be immortal beings with some whimsical powers, but wouldn't ascend until people started worshiping them as gods, since that seems to be how the world works, people could worship the first geomancer couldn't they?  and thus when she "comes back" she's ascended to god hood like Talos in TES, not sure what her sphere would be though, since we already have 2 earth gods.

I dunno people tend to worship others who come back from the dead.

Also the Chimera's are already canonically called human, since that's what they are.
