Smelting and metalcrafting
« on: December 17, 2011, 11:07:01 am »

I am totally newb to metals, I have never made anything of metal or smelted any ore. Could you give me some tips(not spoilers, just tips) on that stuff? xD
Do smelters automaticly smelt ores?

How can I check if I have metal bars or whatever so I can make for example steel pickaxe? Is there any easy way to check your metal bars?

Smelters will smelt ores as a job. You have to set it yourself but you can set it as repeat. They'll use fuel to do that.

I was going to give you a complex explanation but then I rememebred I can just point you to the right place:

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Smelting

To answer your second question:

z -> stocks
Its under 'bars'

Note 2: You will need a bookkeeper working at perfect accuracy to get the correct amount, otherwise you'll get an estimate.

or you can set the job and see if it fails.

You assign jobs of smelting ores at a smelter. That makes metal bars out of ore stone.

If it's a normal smelter, you also need fuel - one bar of coke or charcoal per metal bar smelted. That's quite steep, so you could instead dig down to magma and use magma smelters. Those are free.

What ores do you have? Ore stones typically show up as *s rather than circles.

If you have Magma and you build a Magma forge and a Magma smelter then no.

You will still need fuel to make steel though.

Thanks alot xD

And btw I found somewhat easy way to find your bars, simply try to construct something like a wall and it shows you bars xD

It's useful when you have between 10 and 99 bars of each type and no bookkeeper, but the stocks screen is much better for counting and finding items.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I don't like using the stocks screen for bars, because it seems to also list bars I've used to construct things with. This can be quite deceiving when you've built several iron/steel/pig iron roads around your fort.

This is why I generally take the time to turn them into blocks first.

You don't?  That's cool, gold makes decent roads, too, and marble will do, in a pinch.

It's useful if you use roads as weapons.

Of course he makes steel/iron roads. This is dwarf fortress, nothing but the hardest of all metals could withstand the plodding, deliberate steps of a dwarf hauling a cage filled with bronze colossi.
