A minor question on military scheduling
« on: December 17, 2011, 09:04:15 am »

teal deer: I have a group of 4 dorfs set to guard a burrow (minimum 2 on station). The other 2 "deactivate" and do civilian stuff, and subsequently lose enough skill to downgrade from lords to soldiers. I tried doing training (min 2) and defend burrow (min 2), but the dorfs don't switch out the guard position as often. How can I keep 2 guys on station AND keep their skill up with training without anyone standing around the guard post and getting hungry enough to die?

Okay, I seem to have a bit of an issue with the scheduling system. I'm getting a pretty good handle on it overall, but my military dorfs are almost finished training and I need to get this figured out. Here's my setup:

I have 4 Axedorfs and 16 Marksdorfs. The Axedorfs are my gate guard - the last line of defense in the fort if enemies manage to make it past the hail of arrows and traps. The Marksdorfs are, well, my turrets. I have a few strategically placed towers and I will have one squad (4 total) covering each tower. Right now my Axedorfs are pretty good to go, but my Marksdorfs are still training up.

So here's my problem: Right now, I have the Axedorfs scheduled to defend the "Main Gate" burrow, a small bottleneck that is the only above-ground entrance to the fortress. They do this activity year-round. There are always 2 Axedorfs on the station, and they rotate out. I use the "Defend Burrow" order with a minimum of 2 dorfs.

I noticed that my Axedorfs would lose enough of their skill (while off duty) that they would be downgraded from Axe Lords. For instance, when I initially trained them, they were all Axe Lords. Then I set up the gate defense, they start switching out of soldier mode, and now they are only regular Axedorfs instead of lords.

I attempted to set up a different schedule: Defend Burrows (2 dwarves minimum) and Train (2 dwarves minimum). I figured this would be ideal, as whenever someone is not on station they are training and maintaining their skills as a soldier. However, the dorfs don't switch out stations nearly as often and they forego eating, drinking, etc. I fear that I might lose one of my dorfs.

I am about to have 4 squards of 4 Marksdorfs kitted out and ready to defend my base, but I really consider it a *major* waste of resources to have them keep bouncing between lords and regular soldiers. I'd ideally like them to maintain their military skill automatically, but considering the current situation my system is obviously not all that ideal.

Would someone please help me figure this out?

Edit: The Axedorfs are listed as Legendary (meaning they should be Lords), so I am now not sure if they are losing as much skill as I think. I'd still prefer them to be training and stay in uniform year-round, though, so I can mobilize them more quickly if I need to actually move a squad out.

If they are deactivated, lords lose their lord status.

If they are deactivated, lords lose their lord status.

So... do they ever gain it back?

This kinda seems more like a bug than an intended feature. I mean, the system essentially has it set up where it's impossible for someone to stay a Lord 24/7.

It probably is a bug, but they gain their lord status back when they advance a level in their legendary combat stat.

Okay then, well my main concern was loss of skill. From what you've said (and what I've noticed), this definitely doesn't seem to be the case. Even so, I'd really prefer they keep their titles. I hope this gets fixed in the next update. ;_;
