Counselor,
It has been brought to my attention that our fortress lacks any proper healthcare system. Having fought as a soldier back in the mountainhomes, I understand the value of such supports for residents of a fortress. I have also been informed that you are an experienced medical dwarf, having trained in that profession before becoming our Expedition Leader. As such, I have decided, in my first act as Imperitor of Impaledflags is to have you made Chief Medical Dwarf. A new medical bay will be built soon off the Grand Hall for your usages. Finally, I would like to ask you to remain in the position of Expedition Leader. Your ability to serve as a leader to our community is far too valuable to be squandered.
Again, I thank you for your services to our glorious Impaledflags, and look forward to our continued working together.

Entry 8, 4th Slate, 323
Immigrants! This brings our population up to 37, and it's only a matter of time before we become a target now. The damn greenskins could attack at any time. Luckily, I intend to be fully subterrianian by then. We're awaiting the last few mechanisms to build the draw bridge, and the Barracks has been dug out near the entryway. I'm preparing to have exploratory tunnels dug soon, so that we can begin preparing proper weaponry, and begin armoring our small military. With these new immigrants to our fortress, I may expand on our military, so that we can stop any fools that try to attack us. Curiously enough, my predecessor had no orders to produce Booze made. I have rectified that issue, and we are now creating booze supplies, stocking up for the winter ahead. Also, I have had a temporary stockpile for stone created on the surface. We can move it there so that we can begin proper construction on living quarters. To deal with the excess of rock, I will have a Craftsdwarf begin making trinkets to trade. Journal, I'm beginning to think I might just achive my goal of not dying yet!

Journal of Metalmouth Amostshorasts

Entry 9, 12th Felsite, 323
Mebil Arbanstukos came running through the entryway today screaming as an elven caravan began to unload. He then shacked up in the Boyers workshop, and just kept screaming Zulashsogdol, or something like that, in a completely indwarfish voice. Meanwhile, I've been readying some goods for trade with the elves. I'm hoping to secure us some of their fine wines (Might be a bunch of treehuggers, but I'll be damned if they can't brew up a decent drink.)

Entry 10, 20th Felsite, 323
Mebil finally finished his Crossbow, called Zulashsogdol ('The Painful Famine' in the Human languge, apparently.)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The elves brought literally no decent trade goods this season (No Booze.) The fools are still here, but I've told them to pack up. We need nothing from them right now, and they're clogging up the trade depot.
On the matter of underground living quarters, I'm ordering a new section to be dug out next to the barracks. It will be using a modular design that should hold enough of us for a functional 'Hot-Bunking' system to be put into place, and can be easily extended with the fortress as we need it to be:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Otherwise, stoneclearing efforts are going to be the next big priority. I will have this fortress ready for habitation by the end of my rule, I swear to Usen.

Success! We've finally managed to clear the rock out of the new living quarters! I've set dwarves to woek making new floors. This should allow us to not only use up some of the excess rock, but also make a far nicer looking living quarters. My next task will be sealing off the farming caverns, and linking it through to the fortress proper. Soon, no longer will our dwarves be forced to endure the sun! And our picks and hands shall be our secret weapons! I may leave the current meeting room as it is, until the main hall can be completed. As summer drags on, our stocks seem to be holding, however, I grow tired of the mere estimates I am given, and long for more accurate numbers. I have assigned Domas Ostukbomrek to take perfectly accurate counts of everything. He ensures me that although the task may take quite some time, the numbers he will provide me should be perfect for the next 1000 years. We shall see.

We have finished funishing our barracks and enough of our Dorm rooms to begin the movement underground:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I have also ordered that new underground workshop spaces are to be dug out. With the completion of these tasks, I feel confident that we can resume work on our Great Hall. When informed of this, Belik seemed greatly pleased, and so am I. As of late, I have been getting along with the former Imperitor quite well. However, I still cannot shake the feeling that he is planning something...
I seem to have forgotten to document the arrival of a group of immigrants as our population has increased to 46 while I wasn't looking. I still don't get how 9 dwarves managed to slip past me like that.....

Entry 12, 17th Limestone, 323
Progress is being made on the main hall, with another level nearly complete. This will leave us with but 1 more layer to dig until completion. I fear it may not be completed in time for the end of my term, however I will still try and finish what my predecessor could not. My succesor will have to decorate the hall.
I am ordering new underground stockpiles to be dug, all the supplies stored out in the open can be moved to. With this final project, all of Impaledswords operations will be underground, and we can finally feel safer in knowing that we cannot be directly harmed. I will be growing our military in the next few months, and preparing a new squad of wrestlers. With this completed, we will be ready for any impending siege.
As we enter the fall, I begin to consider who my successor should be. It needs to be somebody who will not allow all the work of myself and Belik to go to waste, and who is strong enough to defeat our foes. But who would fit this role? I will have to sleep on it.

I swear I keep hearing Metalmouth mumbling "Impaledswords".

At least the Great Hall is coming along well.

Journal of Metalmouth Amostshorasts

Entry 13, 12th Timber, 323
With the last of the lumber being moved into the underground stockpiles, our fortress prepares for the winter. Another group of migrants have arrived recently, and have begun making themselves at home, and bringing our total population up to 52. Their assistance has made moving supplies underground a far faster task. I have no doubt the louts will be knocking back all our food supplies in no time. A caravan from the Mountainhomes has arrived, along with a trade representative. I have half a mind to lock them out, but I know it's in our best interest to give them something. However, this is a good sign. It shows that the Mountainhomes respect and recognise our power. Perhaps the poor fools are weaker than I thought.....
As the fall starts to come to a close, I will be ordering contruction of a larger farming facility. This should allow us to keep everybody fed, and allow us to survive the winter without any difficulty. I may trade the caravan for some additional food to bolster our rations anyway, just in case.
I have found myself recently dreaming of my time in the military once more. Unlike my old dreams however, these ones are far more lucid. I find the thoughts of war pervade my most very private thoughts, and the words of battle slip into my speech without trying. I have lately been making what I fear to be a truely ominous mistake. It appears that I have been replacing the "Flags" part of the "Impaledflags" name with "Swords." I have heard of the gods bestowing messages of doom onto those of the world....... could this be happening to me?

The winter passes slowly, and without event. Our fisherdwarves have been keeping us fed with oyster, and the small farm expansion should work for the time being. All in all, it's been quiet. The only real recent event is the death of our resident Soapmaker, Tun Tosedastesh, who died of thirst. On a table. While drinking, if the others with him can be trusted. We had to bury him in an unamazing grave on the storage level, before he killed us all with his stench. My predecessor should take the time to build a burial complex.
My Predecessor..................
It is almost time for me to pick one, isn't it? There are so many fit for the job. Armok-damned, this is going to be a hard one to decide.....

YES! I GET TO PRACTICE MEDICINE AGAIN!

Got to make sure they start producing thread, and crutches, and splints and buckets and I'll need a traction table and surgery tools and casts and EVERYTHING! Especially, I need a HAMMER!

For... y'know... hammering things.

It's so nice to be properly valued.

4 Slate 323
Migrants arrived today. I should petition Metalmouth to get some of the less useless ones assigned as hospital workers. Food and water haulers, etc.

I wonder if I can get a traction table made out of pig iron....

7 Malachite 323
I have my own room! No more sleeping in the same room with a bunch of other unhygienic dwarfs.

I should remember to petition the next Overseer for a bathing chamber. It would behoove us greatly. Also it could possibly be used to train our soldiers to swim.

I hate doing autopsies on drowning victims.

11 Opal 323
I-I'm a bit shaken. One of our fortress members died recently. The soapmaker. This is a bad omen. I've heard some rumors going around that he died of thirst, while drinking.

I think it may have been some sort of disease. Kebul knows most of the members of this fortress are covered in dirt and mud. If I can't convince our next Overseer to build a bathing chamber, we could expect more deaths like this. Metalmouth apparently left him sitting on a table in the dining hall, and he sat there long enough to start rotting.

I hope we have some soap, because I am going to wash every damn inch of that dining hall.

Rejoice! Fath Olinkubuk has given birth to a wonderful baby girl! Fath, and her husband Solon Tinshot have decided to name the child Tobul Riderroads. This indeed is a good sign for our fortress, despite the recent death of our soapmaker. Perhaps my dreams were just that, foolish distractions leading me astray.
I have yet to decide on my successor, however that time grows near. I think I have an idea now though. I shall write the letter in the morning...

Belik's Journal, 8 Obsidian 323
Today I absently wandered the swamp outside the palisade. Nothing eventful happened.

One of us had died recently. A migrant, so I was not an aquaintance of his, but a dwarf nonetheless. I was not there when it happened, but I am told that he died of thirst. Nasty way to go, but considering the death and destruction that probably await us here, it was probably a good death.

Also, Metalmouth, in keeping with tradition, is going to step down soon. As her reign nears its end, I have often seen her deep in thought. I'm not sure if she was contemplating her term as Imperator or if she was dwelling on who she may select as the Third Imperator.

Hopefully she will choose someone who will follow my designs (I am the Architect, after all) and not make disgusting holes in the walls everywhere and call them rooms.

Only time will tell.

Journal of "Magma" Circledroads, Miner
11 Obsidian 323

There are at least two miners in this fortress (I'm no bookkeeper, I have no idea how many people there are in the fortress now, what with these hordes of migrants.) So why am I the only one who does any actual MINING? Ever since his year as overseer, Belik has done nothing but sit somewhere in a corner and hope Metalmouth doesn't notice. And speaking of Metalmouth, her paranoia is driving me crazy! In the middle of every conversation I have with her, whether it's about mining or not, she asks me, "You're not gonna dig into Hell, are you?"

(The rest of the page has been ripped out. Magma appears to have begun writing on the next page.)

Anyway, I've got to go. The "counselor" says I need a session with her. She's calling for me. I said I was busy, but she said Metalmouth had given it high priority. Then she said something about "Anger Management Issues." "Anger Management Issues" my-

(a long streak of ink stretches from the half-completed "A" down to the bottom of the page. It appears that someone pulled Magma away from where she had been writing at this point.)

Had a meeting with Magma today. She's a good friend, but by Armok does she have a temper! Freaking out at me for the slightest thing! I just want to be sure she dosen't accidentally get us all killed! I ordered an appointment for her with Counselor, so that they can talk about ways of resolving her issues. Out of our 4 miners, she is one of our greatest, hell, her skill with a Pickaxe is Legendary, but she can't just go around blowing up at Imperitors like that.
In more fortress-specific news, the trade Liason met with Counselor today. 12 days after the caravan left. I had the Liason leave with orders for more armor and such to help outfit our fledgeling militia. Here is the list of supplies they requested for when they return:

I guess there must still be a war on, with the demand for supplies like that. I hope the battles do not come to our fort, as I fear we are stiill ill equipped to hold off any sizable enemy offensive.

I've almost finished writing my letter to my successor. I just need to figure out who I'm going to give it to now. Piece of cake!
