ImpaledFlags - Succession Game - Dwarves Needed!
« on: December 16, 2011, 12:40:36 am »

Howdy!

This will be my first succession game here on the forums. Each in-game year, control will be passed on to another player, as is the custom. Each player (The fort's Imperator) will write reports during their time leading the fort. These will be written in first person, however (from the perspective of that dwarf).

Dwarves in the fortress will be named after people who want a dwarf named after them. Just post with the dwarf's name. No numbers, please.

Succession will be handled by the current Imperator choosing a successor. If no successor is chosen, I will choose one. The same person can be Imperator more than once, but can never chose himself or herself for another consecutive term. If your named dwarf ("you") dies while you are Imperator, the seat must be given up and you are no longer Imperator. If this ever happens, the previous Imperator becomes Imperator again for the remainder of the deceased ruler's term.

People who have a dwarf named after them may write "journal entries" in first person. These journal entries can contain side stories and such, but should not have anything that could critically affect the fortress' standing or any lore. They can also reflect on what happened in the most recent Imperator's journal entry. They should be dated with an in-game date. Other forms of material written by readers can be in the form of letters written to the Imperator or another dwarf, as well as conversations that they may have had with another dwarf.

I've created a new world which I will be embarking on. I've chosen a medium instead of a large map due to the filesize of the world that will be passed around, among other things. It's called Amethateyo, or "The Windy Dimension".

Embark:
The Windy Continent
The Continents of Playing
The Murk Of Rawness - Temperate Freshwater Swamp
Temperature: Warm
Trees: Heavily Forested
Other Vegetation: Thick
Surroundings: Untamed Wilds
Brook: The Superior Eagles
Resources: Clay, some soil, shallow metal, deep metals, flux stone
No aquifer

I will be using the "Ironhand" texture pack. I expect all of those who take on the role of Imperator to use the same one, at least when posting screenshots.

Well, here we go, and long live Stokidsolon!

Gotcha. We need more people to sign up as dwarves before we can go much further. I'll post the first journal entry now later when I have more than a minute.

Urist fell down, and the ground hit Urist in the head, bruising the muscle, jamming the skull through the brain and tearing the brain!,
And Catten fell into some magma.

I got fed up with my fortress, so I decided to kill everyone (abandon is for elves) with a cave-in.

OK, cave-ins were always pretty deadly, but with the new falling object damage they are downright brutal.  As far as I can make out from the logs, many people were killed by the flying bodies of other victims.  One baby's corpse ricocheted off three other people, two walls and the floor.

You're crazy. Where do I sign up?

Also, Dorf me as ArmeggedonCounselor, if it will fit, if not, just The Counselor. Give me a high consoling skill and other healthcare skills. I will be the doctor.

Imperator Belik's Journal - 1 Granite 322
Our journey is over. Finally.

There are seven of us, all in all:
Myself (Belik) - Skilled carpenter and adequate architect,
Metalmouth, a dwarf proficient in the use of the axe and a competent woodcutter,
Anubis, a proficient stonemason,
Urist the Beardless, who is one of our skilled miners,
Magma, the other miner of equal skill,
HorridOwnage, a proficient grower and adequate brewer
and last but not least, The Counselor, who is good at consoling people (hence the name) and is also our doctor.

We've all braved a long and treacherous journey to get here, which is just a swamp at the base of a mountain. The water here is not salty, so it will serve our thirst well should we ever run out of ale.  Beardless and Magma assure me that there is certainly not an aquifer here, which relieves me. I've heard from Tradition how hard it is to navigate one when digging. Trees are abundant, and so is other vegetation (it is a swamp, after all). If the wildlife causes any problems, Metalmouth can take care of it.

We left the Mountainhomes in search of a place to stay. We were all outcasts from there. We don't need them. We don't need the old kings, the old kingdom, or the old laws. From this place, the Murk of Rawness, we will strike the Earth and forge the greatest Dwarven civilization the world has ever seen. Hopefully the world is ready for the first Dwarven Empire!

...

I've looked through our stockpiles left on the wagon. It appears that we have two pickaxes, a battleaxe, plenty of plump helmets and cave fish, small amounts of medical supplies, seeds, bags, ropes, cloths, threads, quivers, an iron anvil, and plenty of that ever-important booze. This should do just fine. First things first, I need to scout around for a suitable place to begin construction while Metalmouth cuts trees.

...

Before long, I find a suitable spot, and I instruct the miners to begin cutting away at the wall here, which appears to be made out of clay. This may be the future site of the farms, although I do not intend for the entire fortress to be here.

Imperator Belik's Journal, 4 Hematite 322
Work has been coming along well. While the area that was mined serves little purpose but shelter from the weather at this point, the work outside progresses well. We are all clearing the wood piles away so that we can begin construction on the entrance of the fortress proper and on the palisades. I've already drawn up plans for these as architect. Also, I've mandated the construction of some basic workshops for now (temporary) so that we may begin producing some goods.

Journal of "The Counselor" Litastatol, doctor

1 Granite 322
We have settled in a swamp. I am not sure as to why we have settled in a swamp, but it appears to be what our glorious leader demanded. The bloody fool is apparently only barely competent as far as paperwork goes, because, glancing over our emigration papers, it appears he accidentally named me as expedition leader. This is clearly untrue, as I would have certainly not settled in a swamp. Swamps are nasty, disease-ridden places. I can only imagine that I will be losing patients to infection at a sadly rapid pace here, at least until we get soap production started. Why in Kebul's name did we settle in a swamp?

Imperator Belik's Journal, 11 Malachite 322
I had just mandated the construction of some wooden palisades around the dig sire of the entrance. We were producing beds, tables, and chairs and placing them in the temporary shelter. As I was going to grab a stack of logs to begin work on the next bed, I looked off to the horizon, and I saw several figures approaching! Immediately, I informed the others, and Metalmouth readied her axe.

As they approached, I saw that they were not elves or humans, but fellow dwarves! They came towards us and they explained that word had spread like wildfire about what we had done in leaving and how we wanted to form a Dwarven Empire. They wanted a part in it.

The Consoler and I made them fill out some paperwork with their names and, more importantly, their professions. There was a total of six of them, almost doubling our number.

Profiles will come after we get names for these folks!

Imperator Belik's Journal, 9 Galena 322
Comfort, at last! When many of the migrants arrived, I looked over their papers and decided that many of them would be more useful to us as carpenters to help me with the workload, as most of my time is consumes by constructing the palisade and there has not been time to build beds. I also assigned a few others to miscellaneous jobs that we could use.

Today, the last bed was finally installed, and we don't have to sleep in the dirt mud anymore. I also drew up plans for a still, which will soon be installed near the makeshift farm. Our stockpiles of ale run low, but I wouldn't dare tell the others for fear that they might become angry or distraught.

Earlier I observed The Consoler grumbling to another dwarf. She was saying things like, "Why did we settle in a damn swamp?" and, "Why am I expedition leader? Is Belik incompetent or something?". I confronted her about this. I told her that I made her expedition leader because the Imperator needs to look over much broader things and doesn't need to hear the complaints of every disgruntled dwarf. I have much to focus on, as our civilization hinges on my decisions. I also informed The Consoler that the reason we settled in a swamp is because our enemies may never think to find us here. Yes, we are uncomfortable and not at home here, but that is exactly why they think we may not settle here.

Speaking of the issue of our location, I am concerned as to how the migrants found us here. We did not disclose a destination to anyone when we left, we just said we were "headed to the mountains". Perhaps they searched the entire perimeter of the mountain...

Regardless, they will not respond to my questioning... I grow suspicious.
