Jumpin' on the kind-of-necro boat!
My name comes from Puzzle Pirates. I was small, the summer was long, and Runescape had lost my interest. I discovered PP, and needed a piratey user name. Canalan kind of sounds piratey, right? I ended up using it for everything, and have never looked back.
And may as well explain the avatar. I like old games, Doom especially. I think Doomguy is a cool guy. Eh kills demons and doesn't afraid of anything. So, I use his dying face as my virtual one. Take that, read-this-in-my-voicers!
Ah yes, Puzzle Pirates. I remember my days as a Master Sailor, half-decent poker player, a cankerous bilger, and then finally Captain of my own sloop after a great deal of hard work. Then I found that the difficulty of the game just doubles up from there and my interest in the game imploded. Trying to do everything without paying is backbreaking to say the least, since getting anything even remotely decent requires that you fork out the cash, or be the Rain Man at the poker tables to get enough game currency to exchange it for pay-for currency.
And the community is nice too, but god help you if you make even the most remote slight of the game's freemium nature on the forums. You'll be dogpiled on by
everybody, who jump to the conclusion that you're some spoiled, entitled lazy mooch that wants everything for free.
Because seriously, it's possible to lose month's of work on a single expedition, since the game's more exciting things to do means risking a FORTUNE in the cost of your ship, which can sink and take your cargo and cannonballs with it. And once it's gone, it's GONE GONE GONE Baby! No backsies!
Really, the game protected noobies by offering them risk free things to do, but if you wanted to have actual fun, you'd best be ready to face the most unforgiving beast of a game ever devised. And people wouldn't tolerate you complaining about it.
EDIT: Holy Jehoshaphat why did I just fly into a Puzzle Pirates rage?
