What's the origin of your usernames?
« on: December 15, 2011, 08:20:20 pm »

Well, an idea suddenly occurred to me. Some of you have fairly unique usernames, and others just names- but they all have origin stories.

I'll start.
Way back in 2010 when i was playing Runescape, they introduced the  'display names' thing in which you could rename your character. I ran through a list of names (made up, researched, dog-language'd):
Llansing (from a game I had made)
Ruadh (too scottish for a fantasy game)
Acherus (taken)
Reudh (variant on Ruadh to make it sound easier- it's pronounced royth - the dh is a soft th as in 'that'.)
Rauthaz (proto-German for 'Red')
Amhara (arabic for The Red One).

I settled with 'Lord Reudh', but as I didn't have membership i couldn't change the name. Hence, i began to use it elsewhere.
This forum, however, is the first place I've used 'Reudh' without the Lord. The avatar I currently have is an image of 'Lord Reudh' as I envisioned him when I used to roleplay- he's no lord but he insists on being called Lord, and for the most part, people humour him.

I go by a few other names. Peregrine- a character I designed for a friend's game he was making as a final assessment- a little pineapple shaped vaguely kirbyish character who fought barehanded and by rolling. Fenrir- the 'world eating wolf' struck a chord with me. Ungoliant- the 'spider that overpowered the dark lord Morgoth' also sounded pretty cool.

I had a dwarf back in 40d whose last name was Imikurist, and I noticed that "imik" meant chuck and that Imikurist sounded kinda like McUrist. Then I did the obvious thing.

When I was an annoying little kid playing counterstrike I chose Pheonix as my name... only I misspelled it as the city instead of the bird. But hey, I was 8ish.
Anyway, later on I changed it to something that felt less generic after encountering yet another person who was already using the name. Being rather reluctant to move on from the name, I just abbreviated it to P.N.X. because I figured the punctuation marks made it look cooler.

I went with one of the arcana from a deck of tarot cards. I kind of like the idea of someone who loses everything in an attempt to get something else.

A piece of sewing on the wall when I needed to think of a name.

Somehow this piece of sewing has been lost.  It needs to be found sometime.

Ah yeah Pnx, that's why I stopped using Fenrir.

Back when I played WoW (OH GAWD D:) I had a few names. Varok (for varok Saurfang, a character in the game), Nismo (because a friend named his after Mugen (honda's equivalent of Nismo), Nohwei (a friend had a shaman called Woah, so the idea was 'Woah! No way!'

I'm partial to the name Luonnotar or Blodheudd when playing as a female character, which isn't often. Luonnotar is the finnish primal goddess who created the universe when she accidentally knocked a nest over. :P Blodheudd was a woman created to be the wife of Lugh (I think, i'm not sure) but turned on him.

My origin is a bit long, but I found out about DF from the game Powder Game, or rathr the forums for the site which made the game. When playing DF I have a certain naming pattern: In order of which of the profession the dwarf was (first, third etc.), he'd get a Powder Game element in its order on the Powder Game element list. (Powder, then Water, then Fire, Seed, Wood, Gunpowder, Fan, etc.), and then their profession.
The first on both lists were Powder and Miner (a name frequently used by my dorfs), and seeing as I have a little bit of an obssession with the first things on lists, when it came to sign up on the forums, I named myself Powder Miner.

Was signing up for Graal Online somewhere around 2003. Asked my brother for a japanese-y sounding name (as he was big into anime at the time). Behold, my butchering of the japanese word for "monster."

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Designed to replace my old, crappy user name. I forget the exact specifications, but it involved picking from the list of "things I enjoy" (upon which was "Gryphons") and then manipulating them into a linguistically interesting double of some sort.

GlyphGryph (Magical Symbol Gryphon) ended up winning, mostly because I liked the sound of it and oh god look at all those beautiful repeating letters!

Huum. Asprin's Mythadventures series (Also, holy shit, he died in '08? Shows how much attention I've been paying.). Started using variations of Frumple... back in Diablo MP? Probably around '97, '98.

Other currently-regular user name (When Frumple is taken; between Star Control 2 and th'Myth books, it does happen occasionally) is Jack Thejil... which should be pretty obvious. Jack the Jill, just better sounding and better looking :P
