Mine is the title of my favorite song in the Sacred Harp book (here are some people singing it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZrO3P7AQOQ&feature=related. There are some others that are possible competitors for my favorite song but none of them make good usernames (Mear, China, St. Thomas, and Bridgewater don't sound quite as cool...)

As for why the song is named Africa, I can only guess. They're typically named after either some place the writer associated with the tune or where it was written, after Biblical locations, or just after random places (Russia, Poland, Cuba, etc).

My best guess after doing some searches is that it is named Africa after "African American".  The singers themselves are in San Antonia, Texas at the Coker United Methodist Church.  There is a Sacred Harp of Southeast Georgia mentioned in the search hits, also.  I did not listen to the music for long, but it did sound somewhat African to me.

Mine goes way back to when me and my brother started playing Diablo 1, I met some nice guy named Silverdragon, which I thought was way cool at the time, so I stole it. A few years back I grew tired of having such a generic name, but wanted to keep it basically the same, since I'm still quite fond of dragons in general. So I just translated it into Icelandic, since I like the language and lo and behold, a username was born. It's quite unique, it seems, since the top google results are forum posts by me.

Jumpin' on the kind-of-necro boat!

My name comes from Puzzle Pirates.  I was small, the summer was long, and Runescape had lost my interest.  I discovered PP, and needed a piratey user name.  Canalan kind of sounds piratey, right?  I ended up using it for everything, and have never looked back.

And may as well explain the avatar.  I like old games, Doom especially.  I think Doomguy is a cool guy.  Eh kills demons and doesn't afraid of anything.  So, I use his dying face as my virtual one.  Take that, read-this-in-my-voicers!

Ah yes, Puzzle Pirates. I remember my days as a Master Sailor, half-decent poker player, a cankerous bilger, and then finally Captain of my own sloop after a great deal of hard work. Then I found that the difficulty of the game just doubles up from there and my interest in the game imploded. Trying to do everything without paying is backbreaking to say the least, since getting anything even remotely decent requires that you fork out the cash, or be the Rain Man at the poker tables to get enough game currency to exchange it for pay-for currency.

And the community is nice too, but god help you if you make even the most remote slight of the game's freemium nature on the forums. You'll be dogpiled on by everybody, who jump to the conclusion that you're some spoiled, entitled lazy mooch that wants everything for free.

Because seriously, it's possible to lose month's of work on a single expedition, since the game's more exciting things to do means risking a FORTUNE in the cost of your ship, which can sink and take your cargo and cannonballs with it. And once it's gone, it's GONE GONE GONE Baby! No backsies!

Really, the game protected noobies by offering them risk free things to do, but if you wanted to have actual fun, you'd best be ready to face the most unforgiving beast of a game ever devised.  And people wouldn't tolerate you complaining about it.

EDIT: Holy Jehoshaphat why did I just fly into a Puzzle Pirates rage?

I used to have an original nickname, given to me by my school friends, only problem was that it was impossible to translate it to a written version, after several failed attempts (well, i managed, but it caused people a lot of headaches trying to figure it out) i was in need of a new one. eventually i picked the name "Doomchild" which i found on one of my backgrounds of Ayanami Rei. since my first (own) computer has 2 games on it, Doom and Doom II :p, and i fondly recall my time spent playing those it felt like a good pick.
back in the days when dsl and cable internet were expensive luxuries it wasnt that hard to get away with a rather generic nickname... but lately it's been harder to get it as nickname (especially on longer running forums/fora?) i've had to twist and mangle my nickname countless times but when i finally registered at bay12 after over a year of stalking the forum i decided i had enough of it and just slapped something random to it (previous attempts to alter my nickname ended up in things like Doomke and Doomchildje, which considering those use something that's pretty unique to my native language is pretty much as bad as my original nickname)
nowadays pretty much everyone i know outside my family just calls me "Doom" (because people are lazy...)

so yeah, pretty long explanation for a very generic nickname ^^

ps: i did not actually tell you my original nickname... some things are better left in the dark

back when I was like seven, my mom let me make an account on this old ass Windows '95 machine. I couldn't think of an original name, so my brother suggested the first letter of my name with "gamer" after it. I sometimes add a 23 after it, because ggamer is construed as gamer, and I had just seen the film 23. hence GGamer and GGamer23.

All my aliases tend to be characters in stories I haven't writen yet.
I actualy tend to use De'Lacue most commonly (an odd exoskeletoned, tree climbing, sap drinking creature whict tries to solve most it's problems be getting down on all fours and running in the other direction) but many forums don't accept the unusal characters or spaces.
Jerick is another one I tend to use (A sadistic, violent, yet very self controled hitman who only exists in the mind of another character who's convinced he's real).
Fald (A greedy information broker who often makes people believe he's helping them when he is extensively manipulating them so he can make as much as he can from them), Dranton, Hendric, Theadean and countless others.

My avatar on the other hand was something I made during five minutes dicking around on photoshop.
I kinda liked, realised I may as well use it as an avatar since I hadn't any others.

I vaguely remember getting really excited when I saw 'aeon' as a valid word in the dictionary
Aye, the amount of time it takes for a rock to be worn away by the brushing of an angel's wing every 120 years, if my copy of The Tale of Genji is to be believed.

One vacation, a number of years ago, my significant other and I were going through Wisconsin on our way to the Wisconsin Dells.  We were planning on hitting House on the Rock (which is awesome, and you should absolutely go there if you've never been) before we got up there and stayed a night in Mineral Point first, so we could go to the House on the Rock the next morning.  Mineral Point is a small-ish town, and it was Sunday so we didn't have much to do.  So we decided to walk into town from our hotel (which ended up being right on the outskirts).  After wandering around Mineral Point for a couple of hours, we finally decided to make our way back to the hotel.

We were both pretty hot and pretty tired, and as we were trekking down this long road that would take us from downtown Mineral Point back out to our hotel, we noticed the road was named Shakerag Street.  Perhaps somewhat deliriously, one of the two of us started singing "Shake Your Booty" but replacing "booty" with "shakerag".  The whole shakerag connection was reinforced due to Mineral Point having an area called "Shakerag Alley" and some arts and crafts school/shop with "Shakerag" in the title as well.  The whole thing about shakerag-named places and the song stuck as an inside joke between us for years after, and I started using it as a username due to that and because I figured it would be not a likely one to be already used.

I also tend to favor "Somina" as a female name for characters and whatnot.  It moreso has simpler roots in finding words for tiredness/sleep in other languages (Latin in this case, I believe) and altering them somewhat to sound like a female name.  The tiredness/sleep angle comes from my rampant Narcolepsy =P

The avatar is a Shyguy of Super Mario Brothers 2 fame.  I picked it simply because Shyguys are awesome, and it was one of the first big project things I ever made in Minecraft (I have since added a Snifit, Beezo, and Trouter to the first).  I can rustle up a picture if anyone is interested =P

I do not remember how I came up with Stargrasper.  I've been using it for a long time.  It probably has something to do with my strong historic interest in astronomy...

It's Wisconsin Dells.  There is no 'the' unless you're referring to the actual dells, which are a geologic feature, not a city.  And yes, the city is amazing to visit.  The next DF meetup should be at the Kalahari (technically in Lake Delton, but Dells Delton are typically treated as one area by everything but politics).  It's much farther for the Adams' to travel, but it's more central in the country and there's an infinite amount of stuff to do.  What?  I'm a Wisconsinite...

Gah, you're right.  My SO will kill me if she reads that.  She's been to the Dells, like, over 20 times.  It's her favorite place on Earth.  We didn't really have a particular time of year for going up there, but since they started doing it, we've scheduled our yearly Dells excursion to coincide with the Taste of the Dells event.  So if we have it around then ...

Kalahari is neat, but we stay in the Finch every year (awesome spot on Broadway).  Although, we have been regularly visiting the arcade in the Kalahari...

In ye olden days of being a youngling, when the word 'doom' was totally cool and edgy, I thought I'd go one step further and make some stuff up.

Y'see, I was all, "Yeah, I'm DoomSHIFTER, I shift all the DOOM onto other people, hoo yeah, so cool."

Then it just stuck, so even if it is kinda groan-worthy, I cannot imagine anything else that I'd like as a username.
