Moats?
« on: December 14, 2011, 12:25:26 am »

You want a moat? I'll give you a moat. Mission: build a fort surrounded COMPLETELY by water.
Status: Complete.

I have created a fort, balanced upon one support, linked to a lever. On all sides it is covered in water.  The catch? There are two levers. One drains the doom moat, the other drops the entire fortress.

and are the levers in a room filled with identical levers with no notes to help you remember which go where?

I have moats for one primary reason: It encourages enemies to bring animals that can traverse it (Cave crocs and the like) and a well designed moat, wall and trap set up will have all of the goblins drowned and the animals captured...then i will use runesmith to tame two of each that i like and i will volcano the rest because i have yet to find a legitimate way to tame big, nasty exotics that i can't aquire on my own map and i will be damned if i'm waiting for elves to get their arses in gear.

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

Garath - use notes. ;)

OP: Hollow out underneath your floating fortress for ~20 z-levels or so - not channeling, just digging. Why drop your fortress one level when you can drop it 20?

Also, use magma somewhere. :D

Drop it 180 z ~lvls.

It's incredibly gratifying to see your fortress fall, only to have suspended Dwarves forget frame by frame what gravity is.

~180 z-levels into the magma sea! That should make a pretty big splash, eh? :D

Yep, a 4x4 fortress sounds like a lot of fun.

I would also add cat bubble wrap, so the candy clad dwarves aren't even bruised by the impact.
