When they started working on the first game the multi-core wasnt that much popular.

Athlon 64 X2 came out in may 2005, X: Beyond the frontier came out in 1999 if im right. an decently big gap. And yes they kept the same engine only doing tuning and modification to it, but sadly the engine didnt support multi-threading.

Edit: If im wrong im sorry but thats the information i remember.

I still run an Athlon 64 X2, although I bought mine as prices dropped. X3 came out and was desperately in need of utilizing a CPU to its full potential.

Hey guys, big necro and whatnot but I didn't really want to make a new thread as there are already several.

Has there been any news on X Rebirth? I've never managed to get into the X series despite owning X3 Reunion, Terran Conflict and Albion Prelude I found the learning curve to be too high. I'm reinstalling Terran Conflict to try again now. Any suggestions to ease a newb into the series?

I would strongly suggest the X Rebalance Mod. It balances a lot of things, makes the late-game content more challenging and adds a bunch of starting scenarios to make the beginning a bit easier. Other than that, the only advice I could give is don't expect to make an exclusively military career with just an M3 fighter -- you'll need to do some trading.

The best combatant is the one who can afford to prepare himself in battle. Which is to say that you should start in one of the merchant starts and start trading. Don't worry, you'll get to fighting, eventually.

I suggest to start on Albion Prelude, if you have it. The game has one of the simplest main quests and can outfit you with a great Corvette-class ship, as well as some cash along the way, allowing you to learn the basics much quicker.

I also suggest to pick up one of the guides to trading, and another one for the military combat after you have enough credits.

As for mods, it can get complicated trying to install them on your own. Try using the signed scripts of the Bonus Pack, as they're easy to install, come with their own manual (some are admittedly complex) and do not interfere with achievements, if you're into that kind of thing.

I'd actually recommend starting on TC, combat is significantly simpler without having to worry about the war or missile countermeasures (And enemy M8/M7Ms). Plus the plots are better.

AP does have more features and ships as well as being easier to set yourself up so the decision is up to you.

The X3 series does seem complicated but you don't really have to remember what every button does, I recommend memorizing the absolute basics before learning more buttons.

Before anything else, make sure to go into your keybindings and look for "Classic flight mode". I bound that to my r-click so I could switch to it at will. It's *much* easier to fly a ship using your mouse then your keyboard.

The basic buttons you'll really need are:

Accelerate/Decelerate: z/x
Strafe: w/a/s/d
Reduce speed to 0: Backspace
Max speed: Tab
Targeting system: t
Targeting system, object nearest to sight: T
Communicator/Allied ship command menu: c
Your command menu: C
Autopilot Dock/Enter Gate: D
Freight Menu: f
Pilot Menu: Escape
Fire ur lazors: Left-Click
Sector Map: .
Universe Map: ,
Speed up time (SETA): j
Message log: l
Cycle selected missile: m
Launch selected missile: l
Target info menu (When locked on): i
Select weapon group: 1,2,3,4

Other things like the property log, weapons menu, and mission log are accessible at the pilots menu, and the pilots menu also shows the shortcuts to reach those menus. Feel free to learn those at your leisure.

Hmm i didn't play X for a LOOOONG time but i remember a mod that added MARS Fire Control System that not only upgrades the AI on ship turrets but also turns the dumb drones into "goblins" with superior programming and survivability (but not stats).

Those things are pretty darn nice since they will haul goods for you (or rather to you) and CAN dock back on your ship without your help basically turning any freighter into a mini protoss carrier.

However i'm not sure if this mod is still alive and developed... so yeah.

Not sure about AP but usually merchant starts are the easiest so take the one with the mercantile background.

So I took the Humble Merchant start and began the tutorial; got to the bit where I have to destroy the crate only to find I don't appear to have any weapons. What do?

Ignore the tutorial, go do something else. It'll shut down automatically. There's a short tradeguide in the book.

The only thing the tutorial teaches you are flight commands. In fact, you got the majority already. The only thing after destroying the crate is destroying one with missiles.
