Hmmm, been wondering something for a while.

I have X3: Reunion right now. I played X2: The Threat back in the day and it was pretty cool. However, my skills have grown very rusty because of X's terrible control interface so I can't do anything (especially since I can't see a tutorial anywhere, unlike with X2). Also, I've heard that Albion Prelude and Terran Conflict are basically superior in every way, but lack Reunion's main story.

So should I get one of those (or both) before I get into Reunion right away, or should I just try Reunion first?

I'd say... don't play X for the story.
It's not a story driven game and the story itself is somewhat... glued into the game arther than being a integral element of it.

The expansions have pretty much reunion has to offer and more.

Moreso thay're standalones so getting either albion prelude or the full anthalogy would be the best idea.
Also note that rebirth is probably being polished at this very moment and will be released soooner than later so you might want to wait for that.

The general consensus of the expansions are:

TC for trading.
AP for combat.

Aside from the two combat starts in AP, the stock exchange is basically risk-free way to make millions of credits. The local stock exchange is hilariously exploitable, jump in several TL/TS ships full of <good>, buy stock of <good>, jump ships out, sell stock for lololprofit. It's fine since it's a single-player game, so just use it if you want to skip to the combat and don't feel like building a trade empire.

Rebirth is basically dead to me as we're stuck in a single ship and any fighter combat will be done in a drone with no risk of death,

So AP doesn't have all the features of TC and vice versa? Hmm.

I'll probably get both, but I'll have to consider which to start with, then (not to mention that I'm rapidly eating up this month's bandwidth because the ISPs around here suck)

AP does have all the features TC did, but some of the additions negatively affect trading, specifically the war sectors. That and the changes to combat and the fact that some form of missile defense is almost required in any combat where you're flying something smaller than an M7.

I suppose the only thing missing from AP is the Kha'ak, which were wiped out in TC's Final Fury plot.

I'll start with TC and then go on to AP in that case :D

@Repair laser discussion, I know there's a mod SOMEWHERE that adds repair laser factories so you can buy them, I just can't find it now. It might be for TC, though.

The Mobile Ship Repairs mod adds two Repair Laser Factories in Omicron Lyrae and Three Worlds.

Very nice! Looks balanced and well thought-out. If I wanted a repair script I could have found one, but this preserves the feel of the game universe and allows me to set up dedicated repair ships. Thanks!

i kind of like x3 a lot, actually i enjoy ap with xrm, witch makes it pretty damn hard (incursions of bugs and xenons everywhere XD  )

though, i like the over all game play and spend endless hours with the series, there are some design decisions that drive me off.
like, why the hell do i have to explore the universe with each every game? or search for the facilities in every sector?  it doesnt make any sense. (one would imagine maps and yellow pages would still exist even in a distant future)
or why do i have to set up a sat network untill i can communicate? again: no sense at all, space would be kind of cluttered if every  body had to build his own communication network. sole reason is to prolong the game-  but the game really does not need this.
but, this is fixed easily by cheating a bit, so all this leaves is a mild amusement for the crotchety o the devs ;)

finally, there have been totally game breaking problems with the series in the past (like the degrading performance with x3tc,   and with made the game virtually unplayable by mid game, or the buggy beam weapons with reduced the fps so hard that it was not possible to fight larger battles against the kaahk. both bugs where completely game breaking, and both problems obviously have not been to difficult to fix - proofed by mods that sucessfully adressed these issues quickly. yet, the devs took YEARS to fix them, and only finally made X3TC fully playable without modifying it *after*  X3AP was released.
im really pissed here, and i doubt i will buy another egosoft game at full price anytime soon.

The performance problem is because the game only runs on a single core. It does not support multi-threading. Because the game economy takes into account each station and ship in the game, it requires a lot of computation and becomes very taxing. In short the game engine is poorly optimised. I assume this has not been fixed?

Its also one of the main reason they are making a new engine for rebirth.

X3 is using the same engine as the very first game they ade, and at that time, dual core wasnt really common back then. And modifying the engine to make it multi-core thingy would need nearly as much time as making a new one from scratch, i remember seeing that somewhere but where i have no clue....

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

Not quite true. By the time I was playing X2: the Threat, I already had dual-core processor.
