Skyrim Commentary-less Let's Play - You Design my Character!
« on: December 12, 2011, 09:02:05 pm »

As the title suggestions, I will be soon starting my first evah Let's Play, with Skyrim as the game featured.   The videos will lack commentary as I sadly do not own a mic.  Perhaps I'll get one of you guys to do voice-over commentary after I shoot the videos... or use voice bubbles in the video itself.

Anyways, for the character I'm going to be playing, I want you guys to decide how I'm going to design him.  You'll get to vote on his race, "Primary Skill", five "Major Skills", and his overall attitude.

The game itself will be played entirely on Master difficulty and I will be avoiding savescumming for things such as death of followers, getting caught doing illegal stuff, and anything of that sort - except dying, which I will save scum for, although I will not be saving every 5 steps.  Instead, I'll save at the entrance of every new area I enter, or after doing something particularly important (i.e, killin' a dragon).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is what I want everyone to vote on:

Race - I'm willing to do any of the races, although I will be playing a male character.

Primary Skill - This is going to be his main skill that drives him.  Any skill is acceptable, but some will be much, much harder to play than others.

Five "Major Skills" - These will be the five skills I'll be using on a day to day basis and actually be putting perks in, as well as the primary skill.  Again, anything will do.  All other skills not chosen I will NOT be putting perks in under any circumstances, although I'll still use them from time to time on an as-needed basis.

General theme / idea - Do I be a steal-anything-who-gives-a-crap-about-the-law type of person, or a more honor-bound warrior? This is from a more roleplaying perspective.  Come up with something interesting, rather than the two ideas I listed above..

-----------------

Here is an example of what this would look like, using my current character (Seen in the link below) as an example:

Race: Redguard
Primary Skill: One-Handed Weapons
Major Skills: Block, Heavy Armor, Archery, Alchemy, Conjuration

Redguard sellsword searching Skyrim for his wife's murderer. He suffers from hallucinations after witnessing her murder, and often claims to see daedra attacking his enemies and his weapons seem to shift into purple masses in front of his very eyes. He has developed an addiction to Skooma upon realizing that it is the only thing that can stop the hallucinations.

Race: Breton
Primary Skill: Conjuration
Major Skills: Enchanting, Block, Alteration, Heavy Armor, Smithing
Theme: Son of a noble, his family was killed by the Dark Brotherhood, him only surviving due to a thief who had broken in just as he was about to be killed in his sleep. The thief was not very skilled, entering by smashing a window, and had alerted the guards, who chased off the assassin and arrested the thief. Ever since, he has been extremely paranoid, learning skills to protect himself. He flees High Rock, into the neighbouring Province of Skyrim.

Agent - Sounds good, although skooma is dreadfully hard to come by in Skyrim..

Xana - Sounds like he'd want to do anything possible to kill the Dark Brotherhood..

Gonna toss an idea out myself:

Race: Imperial

Primary Skill: Illusion

Major Skills: Speechcraft, Pickpocket, Alteration, Alchemy, Lockpicking, Sneak

Theme: Imperial Bard.  Avoids combat whenever possible, instead choosing to worm his way out of fighting, sneak past it, or use his extensive knowledge of manipulating the mind to cause enemies to back down or turn against each other, either by using poisons or illusions.  Also is willing to hire mercenaries to serve as a meat shield, assisting them with his spells by healing them or disabling the enemy, but in the end more interested in saving his own ass than preserving theirs.  Seeks out areas of ancient lore, particularly in the form of rare books or artifacts.  Has a slightly skewed idea of what is 'right' and 'wrong', and thus is perfectly willing to do unlawful acts if he considers them necessary to his goals.  Also loves to cook exotic meals and drink copious amounts of alcohol.

Race: Argonian
Sex: Male

Primary Skill: Illusion
Major Skills: One-handed, Pickpocket, Sneak, Lockpicking, Alchemy, Archery.

An argonian assassin from birth, he has moved to skyrim in order to directly involve himself against the officials of the Aldmeri Dominion. Works for the DB, and part-times on the thieves' guild. Ingests moon sugar and skooma at least once a day, and always drops a single nightshade next to his kills (assasinations).

Wood Elf
Male

Primary: One-Handed
Secondary: Archery, Alchemy, Speech, Restoration, Sneak

It turns out that being the shortest, smallest guy in a room can get to you. In a nation of hulking, stinking, hairy, brutish Nords - and the men aren't too pretty either- the jibes can start to wear one down. Which is why you like to bring them down.

Basically, you have to kill everyone you can get away with. I don't just mean every random traveler, I mean every non-essential NPC. Of course, avoiding the guards (until you get around to killing them, of course), would be ideal.

Well, everyone except the wood elves, of course. In fact, if there's any way to avoid killing a wood elf, you might want to do that.

I would definitely recommend a Breton, the 50% spell resist will save your ass at higher levels. Otherwise NPCs with Expert destruction spells will one-shot you.

Nord
Male
Primary Skill: Two handed weapons
Secondary: Heavy Armor, Smithing, Enchanting, Block
Paladin of Mighty Talos, he just can't get enough. May or may not be totally racist against all elves. Smites all daedra and daedra worshippers.

Race: Breton

Primary Skill: Conjuration
Major Skills: Alteration, One-Handed, Light Armor, Archery, Sneak

Theme: A Reachman who has had enough of Imperials and Nords ruling his native land. He uses a combination of Daedric Summons, Paralysis, Telekinesis, Bound Bows, and Dual-Wielded Bound Swords to dispatch the enemies of the Reach. He always wears Forsworn leather (possibly enhanced with Alteration armor spells). He prefers to take his enemies by surprise and kill them while they're helpless from his paralyzing attack.

Breton race combined with Alteration perks should provide plenty of magic resistance. Due to the inability to join the Forsworn with legit game mechanics, sneak becomes almost essential if you want to avoid killing your fellow Reachmen. At least one of them may have to die unless you manage to find a set of armor on your own. Relies completely on summoned weapons.

Race: Orsimer (Orc)
Name: Merul gra-Baroth*
Sex: Female

(possible face, based on 9th preset)

Primary Skill: Two-Handed (Maces/Hammers)
Major Skills: Smithing, Heavy Armor, Enchanting, Alteration, Speech [OR] Restoration

Background: Merul was born and raised among the Colovian Highlands, in the mountainous border between Hammerfell and Cyrodiil. Once apprenticed to a renowned Breton Spellforger, she became well-versed in the art of working magic and metal, and had long dreamed of starting a business of her own. This dream was shattered when Hammerfell seceded from the Empire, and her husband-to-be was slain during a border conflict led by the Aldmeri Dominion. Blaming the Empire for his death, and fearing rising unrest and instability in the region, she fled north into Skyrim, hoping to settle in with her estranged cousins Moth and Ghorza in Markarth. After a chance run-in with an Imperial border patrol turned ugly, however, she was mistaken for a member of a rebel group and taken into custody. Her current destination is unknown...

Strategy: Heavy Armor, Restoration, and Alteration make for some superior tanking ability and decent resistance to spells, while a big hammer dishes out heavy damage in a few strokes. Smithing and Enchanting both let you stay a bit ahead of the equipment curve, and outfit your companions in the best possible gear, which should help your survivability. Restoration lets you support yourself and your companions, while Alteration's ability to transmute ore veins meshes with Smithing, and its Paralysis and Detection spells grant some utility as well. The build ends up a bit Paladin, and a bit Merchant. Overall, I like it.

* Swap the gender if you prefer, but if so remember to change the surname to "gro-Baroth". You might want to masculinize Merul into something like Murul or Merub too.

EDIT: Derp, I didn't notice your current character was also an Orcish Smith until just now. Ah well, I'll stand by the suggestion.

I'd vote for this one, and keep her gender as is.  :)

I don't mind playing an other orcish smith-type, as its a really fun type of character to play.  Plus, to be honest, I've been secretely itching to try 2-handed out..  and orcs rule.  It sounds like this Orc would have a hatred for Elves and the Empire, aye? *Grins*

By looking at the general theme of what people've been giving me, it seems a slight trend towards people want me to play some kind of physical character anyways, with some magic to back up, with one/two handed, illusion, and conjuration being popular amongst the primary skills.

I'm gonna wait till later today to tally up the votes though, so if you want to vote / input more ideas, do so before then.  We might pick a direct idea, or perhaps make one from a combination of ideas.

Here's a thought:

Race: Khajiit
Primary: Conjuration
Secondary: Speech, Destruction, Heavy Armor
Other: Sign of the Steed
Strategy: Use summons and followers to fight, and ranged destruction magic. Avoid going toe-to-toe if at all possible; a Khajiit should be able to manage this by virtue of being faster than other races, since other Khajiits are very rare. Sign of the steed will prevent heavy armor from slowing you down.

Alright guys, since there doesn't seem to be any new entrys or votes.. (Except for Sensei's, who posted as I was typing this.. thus the previous statement is a bit outdated XD) here is what I'm thinking of for the character, using everyone's suggestions as a guideline.  I'm taking out my vote for my Bard idea, as I was testing it out and it wasn't nearly as interesting as I'd thought, and throwing in my vote for the Orcish Smith, although i'm not entirely staying true to that char.

Name:  Urist gro-Baroth (male)
Race: Orc

Primary Skill: Two-Handed (Maces/Hammers)
Major Skills: Smithing, Heavy Armor, Enchanting, Alteration, Restoration

*Quoted from Solifuge's Background, changed where needed*
"Urist was born and raised among the Colovian Highlands, in the mountainous border between Hammerfell and Cyrodiil. Once apprenticed to a renowned Breton Spellforger, he became well-versed in the art of working magic and metal, and had long dreamed of starting a business of his own. This dream was shattered when Hammerfell seceded from the Empire, and his entire village was slain during a border conflict led by the Aldmeri Dominion. Blaming the Empire for their deaths, and fearing rising unrest and instability in the region, he fled north into Skyrim, hoping to settle in with his estranged cousins Moth and Ghorza in Markarth. After a chance run-in with an Imperial border patrol turned ugly, however, he was mistaken for a member of a rebel group and taken into custody. His current destination is unknown..."

*My own addition to this background*
As a proud Orc, Urist wishes to make contact with all of the Orc Strongholds in Skyrim, perhaps seeking a new mate of Orcish Blood.  As a result, he also chooses to only travel with fellow Orcs.  He has a great hatred for all Elves*, particularly High Elves, and also is angry at the Empire in general.  He knows no such thing as mercy or pity for the weak, and also believes that his honor-bound duties regard only his kin, not the other races - as such, he may occasionally commit some acts deemed unlawful by the general populous, but never commits any crime towards a fellow Orc.  That being said, he considers theft of any sort petty, and thus will not do it.  Any unlawful acts would generally fall under the category of "I don't like you, travelling bard in the middle of no where, so I'm going to cave in your head."

*Yes I know Orcs are elves too, but he means any non-orcish elf.

Strategy will pretty much coincide with Solifuge's idea.

Any objections to this? Ideas, comments? I'm hopefully going to start taping it sometime tonight or tomorrow.  Also, should I skip the intro (Helgen), and start immediately at the exit to the cave, or do you guys want to see me run through that area?
