Warcraft III
« on: December 12, 2011, 03:10:38 am »

Over the past few years I've had a recurring interest in the game Warcraft III Reign of Chaos. Lately I've found that interested to have sparked up again. I'm wondering if anybody here plays it?

I'm guessing most people are just waiting for Warcraft IV to come out. I thought however that it might be fun to have a Warcraft III player group that could from time to time play Warcraft or one of its mods together.

Meh, I used to play it a bit, but not much. I played it last week but other than that I haven't really touched the game. If some members of bay 12 wanted to, we could get a good game going, probably on a custom map of some kind.
Why?

Why RoC? Go TFT, it has much more maps :).

I've made a few maps for TFT and sometimes play custom maps for that (Island Troll Tribes, Night of the Dead: Aftermath and a few other masterpieces).

P.S. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTarnUI6gsw
P.P.S. Nevermind, crappy video, I will try to find a better one.

It's different from other zombie shooters because it has a lot of tactical elements, dodging, jumping off cliffs and class synergy gameplay. It's really unique. Hmmm maybe this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BaRFICAO3k . It's a shame there's no good videos of NoTD Aftermath :).

I used to play this every day...Just three months ago I stopped. Got sick of all of the DOTA bots in custom and as for a normal match, well, I dunno.

I loved multiplayer back in the day.  The last time I got on to try battlenet (that's the name, right?) I got put up against two things.  1: Elitist DotA pricks who would never let anyone play unless they had played already and memorized the item list and spawn rate, to the point where playing had become a bot-able action with a pre-defined "this is how you play" that was repeated every time.  And 2: The enormous number of bots who ran DotA maps because it had become so scripted as to allow bots to play it extremely well.  Then someone pointed me to LoL and I realized "It's Warcraft 3, same graphics and interface to the letter AND the same elitism!" and then left.

I loved a lot of the co-op defense maps that got done, particularly the ones with a bit of give that wouldn't smite you for missing one kill.  I never actually did much traditional RTS games, I was surprisingly bad at it.  Turns out my game style is much slower and methodical, more aligned to turned-based gameplay than anything else.

Still, Bay12 is cool, so I may try and dust off my old CD and overcome my own hatred of the "old and elite" community to try again.

This is... actually really tempting. I've got my old cd-keys sitting around somewhere or another (though I doubt the CDs themselves work at this point :-\) and a bit of an AoS (Note: Not fooking pansy ass PoS DotA) itch that the non-functioning LoL can't scratch for me.

Would also freaking love to try NotD: Aftermath. Tried many dozen times to get in an game last time I played WC3, but absolutely jack zero people hosting the damn map would let someone DL it and the crap I kept pulling off of map sites was never the right version :-\

And a bunch of other old favorites, too. Need to look into this in the morning a bit more heavily, see how much effort it'd be to get WC3 up and running on this comp. That, and see where the hell I stuck that zip file holding that jackton of custom maps. I was balls at the vanilla game (Don't have the twitch to do RTS proper.), but absolutely enthralled by the custom stuff for a few years, off and on, and pretty solid with several types.

I've been playing lot of Dota with my friends recently, and actually we spent the whole weekend playing Dota almost nonstop over lan. Mfw at 5am when King Araporn joins the game, followed by undead gimli, xxboromirxx and Bilbo bippeli. Great weekend I had.  :P
I haven't played the vanilla WC online much, but the campaign is pretty cool, and I've tried a few custom maps.

I was a big DotA player here too.

But I did have a hand in making "Fortress Survival", "Custom Hero Arena", and "Zomg Zombies!". I used to be very involved in the WC3 mapping community :)

I quit though. All my friends moved on. Only people left are die-hard fanboiz for specific maps, and we all know fanboiz make shitty friends.

Gimme your Steam or something, we can organize a game of NotD: Aftermath.

Also if you have difficulty with the hardcorish gameplay of it, "Undead Assault II" offers a similar gameplay with much more modes/bigger map/more gimmicks, it's much less dynamic and hardcore though (but it has better props for the map). I liked both games because they provided different experience.

Heh, found a nice gameplay video of NotD:Aftermath : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypdIqDpaaTY
Most of it is in Nighvision Mode though. It shows the Lost Cause scenario.

Btw, sometimes you may get an event where your squad is considered rogue/incompetent and there's a full military assault killing everything (including you), and nukes all over the place (with bosses spawning everywhere).

Missions in NOTD:Aftermath are scripted, but organized in "tiers" with random missions selected for different tiers and next missions avaliable dependant on the already completed/failed ones, so the game plot is quite random. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's really hard, depends on the missions you get.

Gonna' have to either find th'old CD case or a way around the CD key, first, heh.

Actually managed to dig the CDs out of my car (Have two RoC ones, for some strange reason), but gods only know where th'ruddy case is. Haven't seen it in years :-\

Steam is JackThejil, though I'm not usually on. Only thing I've got on there that's multiplayer is Terraria, and the widescreen proggie for it bypasses Steam :P

Great, we should organize a game closer to the weekend.

Also why do I love NOTD: Aftermath? Because it's a game where 300 hp marines kill 999999999 hp bosses in the end using pure skills and teamwork:

Oh God, I used to play this when I was little, but we had no internet, so I played the shit out of singleplayer, but that soon got me bored and I threw it away. Now, after 9 or so years I have nor CDs, nor CD-keys  :-\.

If your willing to thiefy-thiefy the game, I might be able to find a CD key. I think I bought like 3 because I kept losing and finding disks :/

ohgodsilovethisgame.

People don't host the RP maps enough, though. Makes me sad.
