Just tried it. I Killed the tutorial, created a sewing kit, and got annoyed by the lag.  I'm pretty sure some of it is computer side, as I know the game is known for server-side lag. Is there anything I can do for the lag on my end?

The lag on your end is virtually non-existant.

Anyhow; with the shitty illogical pirate design still in place I have almost totally abandoned this game.  I used to support it, you can see me in other threads trying to convince people that the lag was slightly better.  The pirates really killed it for me.  Previously the stupidly illogical additions were unobtrusive, but the pirates are basically totally game breaking for me.  I can get on maybe once a week, and now I would have to constantly maintain pirates that can pull officers and ships out of their asses to grind down anything I build.  They can get far more ships than I can officer, and its way too boring for most people to constantly clear the pirates out of their/my systems.  It would have been possible for haxus to make a pirate system that made sense BUT NO HE HAD TO MAKE THIS PIECE OF SHIT.  I still monitor the game but I have very little hope for it.

I don't suggest you guys bother with this game.  Do whatever you want I guess but it sucks.

I have to agree, pirates still spawn too often. Hell, I had them spawn and attack in my home system, though my ship and laser bases made short work of them.

So long as you have a tough combat ship they're really more nuisance than actual threat, but a very big nuisance they are indeed. Unless you actually have business in that system you can usually just ignore them.

Recommendation: Research laser towers as high as you can get. Build as many as you can on each planet you can, even colonizing just to make bases if you must... TL32 bases will tear pirates apart like nothing. Build stations with weapon bays too. They will shoot at pirates despite not having an officer, so building one around each planet will give you further defense. These should be sufficient to annihilate any pirates that appear in your own systems.

Only problem after that is reclaiming uncolonized systems from them.

That's all great advice for established empires with TL32 tech, but the real problem is that it takes months (usually) to reach that level without assistance, and in the mean time, your new empire is getting annihilated by the TL32 pirates who spawned when one of the big empires flew through to take a look at you.

To be fair, a lot of that problem arises from the tech system being unbalanced (there is no way to even scratch a ship more than 5 TL above you in ship-to-ship combat, even with superior numbers), but it's suppressed new empires heavily, especially those who can't get on every day to fight pirates.

Well, you don't really have to research it, just find someone else that has the tech and buy it from them. Oddly, TL32 laser towers are rather prolific.

Nah, research goes to the level of the disk, not just their own level+1. So you really only need one, then you have the capability to research it yourself to fill out everything else.

Unless there's some restriction I didn't know about that applies to foreign tech disks.

I dunno when you last played, but Haxus made an update a while ago that caused Foreign tech disks to only improve your technology by one level at a time. So, you'd need a whole bunch of foreign disks if you wanted to go up a whole bunch of levels.

I made an empire alone some months ago, and let research run alone.
Pirates weren't even implemented..
I pretty much got to TL20 alone in some weeks, I had awesome production and infrastructure..
Took a lot of time to make everything possible..

Then I just left the game due to the omnipresent, infinite lag.

I have repeated that exact cycle a dozen times or so now. I offered Joe Haxus(the dev) a new server at one point but he wasn't accepting any type of donation. Just as well, since it turns out it runs on 12 servers. It's simply awful net code. I wonder if he would let us raise the money to hire a netcode expert?

He apparently just put in an order for a new server cluster, so that might help somewhat, but yes, the problem is the net code.  I think he won't accept donations though, since he apparently funds Hazeron through the other projects his company has done.

that is great news! The lag problem is weird since after he updates the servers everyone's lag gets better for a few hours up to a couple of days. It acts like a memory leak, but it's server side and seems independent to each user. It will be very difficult to track down.

I had a TL32 empire once, alone with 3 player sporadicly online, what i hear from pirate is a no-go for me then, ill wait a bit, if you want my point of view pirate should be TL-5 so we got something to do but dont get our ass sent back to the planet as soon it take off. But at least it give something to shoot at!! Better join another empire instead of having 50+++ solo multi system/auto-trader combo thingy.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

Warp drives just got implemented.

Friggin fast.  18 hour trip reduced to 20 minutes (or close to that).

Only problem is you need to know where to aim the ship, so gotta use a deadhead calculator.
