So many corpses...and clothes everywhere.
« on: December 10, 2011, 01:20:35 am »

1. It's gotten to the point where my fortress's entire roof is covered with the mutilated body parts of my defeated enemies.  Do these things ever fully deteriorate?  Or is there some way of disposing of corpses that I'm missing?

2. My dwarves like to leave their old clothes lying all over the major hallways and on their beds...while harmless, it's kind of an eyesore.  They also seem to ignore commands to dump the stuff.  Any way to clean it up?

1. Corpses get stored in refuse stockpiles, but you need to activate outside refuse collection by pressing (o)rders (r)efuse (o)utside. They also deteriorate over a long time, and become bones.

2. You can get them to store it in their rooms by giving them cabinets and they should do it whenever they have no job. Children refuse to clean up their rooms.

But bones take up space too...I've got 5 butcher's shops running full steam to try and get rid of the animal corpses, as well as 3 craftsdwarfs workshops on bone-bolt detail to clean that up, but it's still not enough.

Oh.  Well dang.  Now to replace the 150 coffers on my bedroom level.

Dig out a small room (3x1 is enough) with a door. Build a raising bridge that covers all it's area. Link it to a lever somewhere outside. Raise it. Desgnate an 1x1 [g]arbage dump area where the bridge will come down upon it. Un-designate all other such activity zones. Run dfhack, type "cleanowned x" just to be sure. Mark all those skeletons and xclothesx and cartilages and other junk for dumping, either manually ([k], hover over it, [d]), en masse ([d]--[d]-draw rectangle) or from your [z] stockpiles menu. Wait till your lazy midgets haul it all on that single tile. Close the door when there's no-one inside. Pull the bridge's lever.

Problem solved.

Bodies take forever (I really mean forever) to decay in underground tiles, it's easier to leave them outside your fortress and collect the bone alter with mass dumping.

I've taken to dropped a dollop of magma on enemy corpses left outside using dfhack, it doesn't ussualy melt the bones but it destroys anything not metal they had on them pretty well, you may consider it cheating but i don't as all its saving me from is horrible fps death.

Dig a hole to the magma sea, put a hatch cover on it and then set it to be a pit, a garbage dump and a refuse stockpile all at once. Commence dumping.

Dwarves are pretty smart about chucking things down z-levels whenever they have an opportunity. So long as the stockpile is next to a hole, they'll figure out that you want them to lift the hatch cover and throw whatever it is in the hole.

Caravans will also carry items permanently off the map. Traders love it when you offer to pay for your supplies with a mountain of worn socks.
