As much as I love the idea of STALKER I think most people would agree that SoC was amazing despite severe issues, Clear Sky was 'alright' but didn't really fix much and was simply a refinement of the same game.  CoP could easily be called the third 'game' as it could be merely called the third iteration of STALKER's development.  All sorts of sites and even a bunch of the company's hype basically amounted to "No seriously this is what we wanted the other two to be like".

It's upsetting we might not get STALKER 2, of course.

There's a slim chance that this is a PR stunt or something of the sorts. The Stalker franchise made plenty of money, Call of Pripyat selling millions of copies. They can't just be closing because the PC market isn't big enough and a console deal fell through. There are all sorts of ideas about what may have happened or be happening, including one involving the Ukrainian government or a Mafia extorting GSC. Stalker sales will likely go up after this and fans of the series are certain to buy S2 for fear of GSC going under, so it would make a decent amount of sense as a GoG style publicity stunt.

An official statement will be made on Monday; http://www.facebook.com/officialstalker/posts/331268793565709

I don't think anyone would disagree with this. It's just, like you said, despite several glaring flaws in all products, their future and the future of Stalker 2 seemed certain. There was enough love and goodwill out there to support the second game, to at least see what it would be like. To me this is like a fatal car accident versus a terminal illness; the ones coming out of left field are always the hardest to accept.

I do agree that CoP was less the third game and more the completed product they intended to make all along, but SoC was still one of the best games I've ever played.

That seems like a pattern with Eastern European games.  Maybe it's because they don't have as much money to put into Quabity Assuates, as Creed would say, but they always seem to be really good premise, really poor execution.

i feel really stupid for making another topic. but i'm glad it was deleted/else. but damn, CoP and SoC were one of the greatest games i have ever played, so i guess i will go in my corner now and cry until some other studio (like a group of people who have left GSC and formed their own company, like 4A) picks STALKER 2 out of the dustbin.

Darn. One of my friends had Call of Pripyat and it was a really awesome game.

i am not so much pissed off about the killing of my favourite FPS series, as i am pissed that it happened to an FPS who tried to innovate. i like CoD, it's fun, but 6 hours of SP that i have the feeling i have played a bajillion times before, and a multiplayer which looks and plays like a browned-down Quake live match? and then STALKER comes along, rocks my world by giving an FPS an opened enviroment, quests, equipment(i can has more than 2 guns! yay!), enemies that acctually have more character than "a soldier wearing a different brown shirt", artefact hunts, and a really enjoyable perspective of "you are just a human. no, you cant eat bullets, and yes, it's usually good to run away from them" and many other things. it pushed the FPS genre from 'yeah, it's like Space invaders, only in first person' that call of duty offers to a much bigger, better stage. and then the developers run out of money. GAH! i am so pissed off right now. i'll go sit in my corner.

I once heard a rather compelling argument dictating that the STALKER series is An example of everything good about PC FPSs.

I'm rather inclined to agree.

Hopefully the company gets up and running again, I was really looking forward to STALKER 2.

This could be another PR fiasco like the DRM thing. Apparently GSC have bought new offices and they might have meant they were closing their old office down, not the company.

Not the developers. Anyway, they've said a couple things on facebook, by the sounds of it it's either 'dunno' or 'we're not closing, just going through a hard time'. Linky.

The Facepunch forums have a big thread on Stalker with plenty of people who are fairly well informed and connected with the east Europe/Russian fanbase.

Okay, reading up a bit on the FB group and such definitely sounds a little less dire than 'already closed'

'Here's more update from the Ukrainian bro who organized the supportive flash-mob and visited GSC today.

1) The rumors about GSC's immediate closure and Stalker 2 being already put on ice are NOT correct.

2) It's true however that GSC does have troubles with the development of Stalker 2. According to my intel, it's mostly caused by a lack of human resources. Money, USS, mafia and mutants were not brought up as problems during his meeting with GSC.

3) Negotiations are going on to tackle the problems. The final decision about the future of GSC (and Stalker 2) might be known in a week.'

FB or FP?

I hope the T.V. series will still go on even if S2 gets cancelled. I'd learn Russian just to watch it.
