An armoured recon unit could have easily circled around/through the Bolsheviks, informing us of enemy troop strength and placement. They could then have aggressively supported the 23rd FJ in combat. Alternatively, having lots of movement points, you could move our recon elements to handle the partisans in our rear with some artillery support. What little I've read about German (armoured) recon indicates that they were used fairly aggressively both near the frontlines against weak or exposed enemies and behind enemy lines against other targets of opportunity.

At least in Panzer General 2 the abovementioned unit usage is perfectly viable with properly armoured recon units, ie. basically anything above the first level armoured car.

I could take command of something, but it would then forever have my curse which is likely to walk it into an ambush of pink elephants or maybe carnivorous alpacas.

Bah. There is no honour left in the red army. They could at least let me set up the guns.

Wow. Looks like I almost killed as many of the enemy as my own men, and not for the first time. This cant be a bad thing, surely?

July 8th, 1941

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Army group North prepares for an advance on Vilna.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Disaster!
The 23rd FJ was at last inbound for the front, when out of f***ing nowhere a squadron of Mig-1's materialized from the Fog of War and descended upon the hapless paratroops.  Elfeater, it appears half your command was shot down - may God have mercy on those poor bastards.  I dispatched two Bf109 squadrons to deal with the problem.  The third has been grounded at Siedice airfield to re-equip and refuel.
In other news, the ground troops and armored divisions spent the past two days re-equipping and resting.  Volkovysk is our staging ground for our next big advance, towards the Nieman river cities of Novogrudok and Baranovichi.  I blew almost all of our prestige points on this massive resupply-reinforcement break.  The Fuhrer demands to see some results, schnell!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Good gravy!  The defenders of Brest refuse to surrender.  The grenadiers will keep up the pressure until the Bolshevik dogs are crushed beneath their own reinforced concrete bastions!

July 10th, 1941

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
On a reconnaissance sortie, the 3rd Cavalry under Herr Oberst PhantomSpaceMan encountered two division of enemy infantry dug into the vicinity of Vilna.  Immediately they were ferociously counterattacked by these Red troops, and these heroic horsemen fought like caged lions to the death.  They took out half a division of Bolsheviks with them, their map avatar exploding in a glorious fireball after the second wave overtook them.  It is believed commander PhantomSpaceMan was KIA in the action.  A commemorative paperweight is being commissioned in their honor.
Elfeater's 23rd FJ will soon be dropped into action southeast of Vilna.  Their objective is to march with all speed northwards and secure the airfield outside of the city, as befitting their training.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The fighting is picking up outside of these two cities.  We'll overwhelm them in short order, I am confident.   Securing an airfield here is imperative to keep up our air war in an effective fashion.  Casualties have not been significant.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Brest has fallen at last.  The 2nd Wehrmacht Div. under Hanzoku will post up here until we fully assimilate the city in a couple of days, and then will be upgraded into a division of pioneers/combat engineers, Prestige Points withstanding.  Unfortunately every bottle of liquor in the city must have been shattered by our heavy bombardment and repeated assaults, so they'll have to make do without any libations befitting their hard-earned achievement.

July 12th, 1941

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The 23rd FJ are on the ground and have regrouped.  Vilna will not hold out for long.  Also, thats the 26th Panzer Div. (NotAQuisling) I brought up from Army group center, at the bottom of the picture.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Bolshevik defenses are not holding up to our steady advance.  We'll keep up the pressure.  We have the use of our Ju-87 dive bombers to soften up the defenses of Baranovichi, and there's not much enemy air power left, aside from the occasional blitz of Migs.

July 14th, 1941

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I ordered the 3rd Wehrmacht to engage that well-entrenched Soviet infantry beside the river, just to get them out of the way, really, but instead we took far too many casualties to make it worthwhile.  It was a poor decision.  The 23rd FJ engaged enemy forces outside Vilna, crushing the remnants of one infantry division, and withstanding counter-attack from the city defenders.  They'll seize the airfield tomorrow.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Currently, we're steamrolling the defenses outside of Baranovichi, but little Novogrudok has proved to have sharper fangs.  Again, I sent an infantry division into an assault without first properly softening the defenses, and they suffered heavy casualties.  This time it was the 11th Wehrmacht.  EuchreJack, the 22nd is actually just catching some rays right now and hanging by the river, since they can't really do much good either south or north of their current position.  The 1st FJ took on that artillery position and dismantled it very professionally.  Can't risk having your Panzers crossing the river with enemy air power still  unpredictable in the region.  As soon as we start crossing the bridge, you'll be moving east.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The 2nd Wehrmacht has become our only unit of Pioneers!  I'll dispatch them to the front right away so they can get in on the action.  Also our mega-cannon is slowly rumbling east across the plains to catch up with the front lines.

It is believed Communist general Fishbreath is personally overseeing the defenses of Minsk.  We shall crush him!

Well, professional soldiering would mean with minimal loss of life, quickly, and minimal collateral damage... i.e everything I would hope to avoid!

Seems like two divisions at once disrupts the time/space continuum.  Easier to chronicle your personal battlefield adventures if you're in the thick of it amongst your troops.
