I'll take command of the cavalry unit that's stuck in outside Brest.

Wow, this is great!  Our ranks are swelling with new B12 field commanders.
Here's a quick update to get things moving.  I'll do my best to update some more today.

July 2nd, 1941

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Over the past few days, it's become increasingly clear to me that North and Central army groups will have to merge together in order to capture this Volkovysk region in a timely fashion.  The Soviets keep reinforcing and we keep destroying their defending units, but to really bring them to their knees we'll have to get creative.  Meanwhile, our armored divisions west of town are taking the brunt of the damage while waiting for the situation to change.  We can't sit still for this!

Our fighter wings have been dogfighting furiously over the front for days now, and they're sending dozens and dozens of enemy fighters to the ground.  The nimble Soviet I-16 Polikarpov fighters are inferior to our F-model Bf109's, but Mig-1s have been a worthy opponent in the skies.  Our Ju-87 divebombers (pictured) were ambushed over the front by I-16's, and will have to re-equip for a few days.  We're still whooping them, though.  Once we wear down their numbers we'll have air superiority.  In this photograph, our 5th and 12th Bf109's were refueling at Siedice airfield, and the green 26th is being re-equipped with fresh fighters to replace the fallen; The learning curve for fresh fighter pilots is steep.  I'm very proud of our Luftwaffe overall, I have to admit.

Uh oh: On the 28th, the 13th Gebirsjager Division marched south over the bridge right into a nest of enemy troops.  They dug in alongside the north-south highway levee and thus entrenched fought ferociously against the Bolshevik on both sides of their position.  With only time to dig simple foxholes, and facing T-60 tanks on one flank, the 13th Div suffered almost 40% killed or wounded in two days of fighting, but are holding their ground.  Looks like we'll need somebody else to find the soft underbelly of Volkovysk's defenses.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
With the 13th GBJ pinned down and in need of relief, a notable action yesterday led to the total destruction of this enemy armored division.  The 19th Panzer Division northwest of the Red armor struck hard against the T-60s to draw them off their attack.  Falling back from the Panzer IVD's, the Red armor found itself at the riverside, cornered.  Taricus was ordered to move several elements of his 36th Grenadiers to the Nieman ASAP and pounded the T-60s from the bridge while the 13th assisted in assaulting from the south.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Brest:  More of our infantry has come over the river, being careful to stay out of range of the Brest fortress' guns.  Looks like the 2nd Wehrmacht succeeded in destroying that AA position.  If we can do enough damage with our artillery, it may just pay off to have the 2nd Division storm the fortress tomorrow.  We've lost enough time here already.  With all this infantry at hand, it looks like the 1st FJ can be diverted to the assault on Volkovysk.  By the way Monkeyhead, instead of moving out yesterday, it looks like you were able to round up some of your wayward paratroops.  Yes, 80% strength is far too tidy for the 1st.  You need to get some blood on your boots.  Get moving!  The 3rd Cavalry under Herr Oberst PhantomSpaceMan is going to accompany the paratroops.  This force of foot should be all we need to topple Volkovysk.

More to come soon.  New unit assignments:
PhantomSpaceMan - 3rd Cavalry.  They are possibly a brigade of Italian buccaneers, if UNEC_officer has checked his facts!
DoomLard - Since we don't have any more 15cm field artillery around, you ought to take one of our 105mm battalions.  How about the 6th Battalion, which is en route up to the central front right now.
Delta Foxtrot - Is in waiting for a recon or cavalry unit requisition.
Hanzoku - After being so gracious to lower his standards, is now commander of the 2nd Wehrmacht, which is preparing for an assault on the Brest fortress.  Remember to write a letter home before the big day, just in case, you know?

You forgot one:

Fishbreath (traitor!) commands whichever infantry division is defending Volkovysk.

And we lost our cartoonist?  For shame!

Also are those Gebirjagers grenadiers?

Gebirgsjägers aka. mountain infantry aka. kinda sorta elite/special forces/glorified military unit.
Grenadiers were elite infantry units during the first half of WWII, but in -42 all regular infantry units were renamed grenadiers removing the distinction.

With the important distinction that gebirgsjägers excel in mountain warfare, both gebirgsjägers and grenadiers can be viewed as elite units.

After clearing that hellhole fortress in Brest, I'm sure my request for pioneer equipment (flamethrowers!) will be met with more favor.

July 4th, 1941

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The 1st FJ encounters a division of Red infantry dug into the woods south of their objective!  Give 'em hell, Monkeyhead!
Otherwise, Volkovysk should be ours tomorrow, with the help of the 11th Wehrmacht who can storm the city defenses more effectively than the Panzers.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Brest: Noble effort, Hanzoku!  After a heavy bombardment from our artillery, you managed to overtake and destroy several segments of the fortress, without taking heavy casualties.  Go ahead and give it another shot, with the limited small-arms and explosive tools at your disposal.  Perhaps we can outfit your unit to pioneers in Brest once the city falls.
The 17th GBJ division is moving to the front, stat, we can't waste any more time or resources here.

July 6th, 1941

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
These forces are being appropriated from Army Group Center to retake the initiative on the northern front.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Hurrah!  Volkovysk has fallen at last to a noble assault by the 11th Wehrmacht, ending the clusterfuck that has slowed our advance.  EuchreJack's 22nd Panzer Division had the glory of moving in to put up the flag, and got first pick of the wenches.  We thought Fishbreath was dead, but it looks like he fled town just in time with his remaining men.  We'll catch up with him later.

The intense shooting you hear over in the woods to the south?  That's the 1st FJ in a white-hot firefight with a remaining bastion of die-hard commie infantry dug in outside of the city.  Half the FJ were wiped out in the last two days, but they've single-handedly almost routed this Bolshevik infantry division which surely must outnumber them.  Bravely done, troops!

Since enemy air power seems to be mellowing out considerably, our Luftwaffe must have shot down most of their fighters by now.  Looks like it's time to bring in Elfeater's 23rd FJ for a vanguard drop behind Baranovichi.  A fighter wing scouted that area out earlier and there's no AA dug in there.  Hopefully they'll fare better than the 1st FJ did on their inbound flight.

Lastly, those irritating Bolshevik guerillas are at it on our rear supply lines again.  They ambushed DoomLard's 6th field artillery battalion whilst they were in transit, trucking down the road unassumingly in a column of Opel Blitzes; almost half the trucks were disabled or destroyed.  Scheize!  I'm going to try and completely destroy them with FLak 88's, Bf109 strafes and artillery rather than divert our frontline ground troops to this insipid mopping-up task.  Give up, Ivan!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Brest:  After two days more of intense street combat, the 2nd Wehrmacht is out of ammunition, exhausted, and the fortress still stands.  Fortunately our casualties have not been high so far.  Let's bring in JacenHan's 10th Grenadiers to finish the job.
