-snip-

The 22nd Panzer Div. continued slugging it out with the British armor blocking the highway, speaking of which, where's Generalleutnant EuchreJack?  I've got to pin this on his tunic:

Nice work, tankers!

Here's the situation as it stands this morning:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The 1st FJ had a hell of an engagement yesterday.  The British armor after getting walloped by the 22nd fell back through Salonika to pop back out east of town to rub out those poor paratroops.  Were they in for a surprise!  The paratroops were ready for that onslaught even with one-third of their men dead or missing, and completely crushed the armored attack, disabling all of the tanks.  Herr Oberst Monkeyhead distinguished himself in the fight, personally leading the furious counterattack that won the day, a Luger in one hand and flinging potato-masher grenades in the other (more for show, really, than anything else).

A comic starring EuchreJack and MonkeyHead!

I'm in love with that general.

Also, I cannot help but notice that the Führer expect us to be victorious in a week. And we're barely in Greece!

I would suggest letting the rearmost Italian division to mask the Greek and Aussies while I and the 23rd Fallshirmjäger deal with the Kiwis. During that time, artillery and bombers should focus on Monastir defender, and we'll take the city next turn.

DD, that last comic had me cracking up, hard.

April 12th, 1941

Here's what's going on:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Avast!  British fighters descended suddenly on our hapless Ju-87R tactical bombers and brought many of our good pilots down.  Luckily, our two Bf-109 wings have just refueled at the Sofia airfield and are enroute at high speed.  Those Brits don't stand a chance!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We have a new artillery battalion joining us on the front, under Simmura McCrea's command.  Our Flak 88's weren't seeing any action, because there (wasn't) much enemy air power around and I think we've obliterated most of their armor already.  So I've dismissed them, and brought this artillery in their stead.  These are our only 15cm pieces, and they can shoot the tits off a cat at three hexes on a good day.  Since our Ju-87R's got shot up these babies can shell Salonika for us while that wing re-equips.  We also have to knock out their AA emplacements before we bring the dive bombers back in.  It will take them a day to get in place, though.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The bloodied 1st FJ has managed to regroup and will destroy the AA emplacement just as soon as the 13th Gebirslagers (Mtn troops) can blow up that heavy artillery battalion dug in at the airfield.  The FJ would get minced by those guns if they attacked right now.
Our advancing panzers have been walloping the cavalry blocking the highway (how they're blocking it, I cannot imagine) and once the enemy disperses, those SS grenadiers have orders to storm the city of Salonika.  They've been drinking wine and chasing girls in Strumica for a couple days now, while everyone else does the hard work.  They haven't really earned their stripes yet, if you ask me.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
There were some unpleasant surprises in for the Italians yesterday.  That one unit, that retreated southwards?  Annihilated by Aussies.  The Greek mountain infantry to the west then slipped behind the ragged Italian lines under the cover of darkness to strike the 105mm artillery emplacement; those gunners took heavy losses before the attack could be repelled.
The good news is that the 16th Panzers steamrolled those brazen Kiwis and kept on going.  I hope those Aussies have their running shoes on...
Especially with the aid of the incoming Italian air power, I think we can just about wrap this sector up.  Shelling has reduced the city defenders to shambles.  Monastir should be ours within a day.  As for the other front, high command can join us for cocktails in Salonika in 48 hours.

I think our progress will speed up once we get past this juncture in the campaign.  Especially with the help of the fleet, who'll be anchored offshore when we get into Greece proper.  Really so far we've just been in Yugoslavia.

Wooo.... won me a pen! I love the look of the monacled tank driver just as I am about to shoot him in the face.

Bring on the AAA. They will find we arent as easy a target on the ground shooting back as we are floating slowly down to the ground.

Huzzah for artillery. Gotta say, I think if you hit a cat with a 15cm shell, I think you'd blow more than its tits off.

Since you are the artillery commander, I'll have to take your word on this.

Yeah, I imagine you'd want revenge against that AAA unit.

Don't forget you have to return the pen at the end of the day.   :P

Is Monastir part of our objectives? Maybe we could bypass it.

Today is a double-update of sorts.  The day of 12th (turn before last) was mostly filled with maneuvers, although there were some highlights.  Monastir fell to the 23rd FJ, and the Italians were dispatched southwards towards our next objectives after eliminating the enemy forces spoken of earlier.  More on these objectives later.  Also Sheb, I went ahead with the taking of Monastir because the 23rd FJ isn't motorized, and so would have to walk right by it anyway.

Near Salonika, our fighter wings engaged the Brits and shot most of their planes down.  The 12th fighter wing earned some honors.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The 1st FJ and 13th Gebirsjagers coordinated an assault on the heavy artillery located at the airfield.  Although the 1st FJ assaulted first, and nearly completely wiped out the entire artillery battalion, the 13th Gebirsjagers took the glory when assigned mopping up detail shortly after.  To be fair, the 13th took significant casualties (tripping over munitions, maybe?) and they're an honorable unit, probably our most decorated at this point.  Maybe next time, 1st FJ.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We're just handing these things out like candy.
Here are some details about the 13th:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Yesterday the 36th SS grenadiers moved up into position for the assault on Salonika, but the attack was delayed until Commander McCrea could get his 15cm guns in position.
I also gave those Panzer 38ts an honorable discharge by sending them to their certain destruction, attacking the AA position. They had no impact whatsoever.  This has made room for one of our reserve divisions to be deployed.

Now, for current briefings.
April 14th, 1941

First of all, I'd like you all to meet our new arrivals, the 10th Grenadiers.  They are under Generalleutnant DarkerDark's command.  Currently they're on the road, trundling down in Opels towards the frontlines.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Here's the situation outside of Salonika.  EJ, I only moved the 22nd into that lousy pocket because I needed to make room for the 36th Grenadiers to assault the city.  The heavy guns are in place and the city should fall pretty quickly, especially with air support after the AA is knocked out.  I've brought some Bulgarians in to absorb the brunt of the attack help out.  BTW, I investigated and disbanding auxiliary units (like Italians or Bulgarians) will not open up slots for our reserve troops, which is unfortunate.  We'll have to take these guys all the way to Athens with us.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Like I said, I sent the Italians south through the hill country, hoping to get them in place for a back-door assault on Trikkala, which is situated in a very rugged mountain pass.  The poor 25th infantry stumbled into a Greek infantry division, though.  Reconnaissance from our fighters shows that we're up against lots of infantry, and little else.  I would rather go around Kozani, at the top of the image, but the position of that city on the only highway will choke our advance (especially if it starts raining), so we might as well take it.  After this upcoming tangle with Northern/inland Greece, we'll have heavy artillery support from our navy , who've almost made it around the coastline and are on their way up to aid us.  Speaking of which:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Here they are sinking the British expeditionary force that was too daft to slip out of the bay when they had the chance.  Picture taken outside of Athens.  That's all for now.

When my unit is eliminated in that pocket, I leave my Iron Cross 2nd Class to MonkeyHead.  He has to wade into the pocket to get it, however.   ;D

Things are really moving faster now that the main force of the Greeks has been broken.

April 15th, 1941

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
After re-supplying, the 23rd FJ moved into position to assault Kozani, with artillery support.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Here our victorious troops are licking their wounds and staging for the next big push.  I'm going to dispatch many of them by sea to capture the southern port cities in time to meet our deadline.  The terrain of Greece means there's some major choke points up ahead that will slow our advance, outside of Athens and Corinth.

April 16th, 1941

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The 23rd moved into the city after some heavy shelling and obliterated all enemy resistance with scarcely any casualties.  These guys are good.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Hurrah!  Our navy has arrived (at last) and can begin shelling almost anything east of the mountains which is beginning to make this battle sort of one-sided, actually.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Here's an image of our huge motorized iron fist driving south.  Note the Italian infantry division that was completely annihilated by the Greek infantry in a single assault shortly after this picture was taken.  Also, the 1st FJ is getting another chance to jump.  This time it will work out better, I assure you all.

April 17th, 1941

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Our next objective should be ours in a day.  We have so much firepower at hand that it's a little ridiculous.  The 10th Grenadiers (DarkerDark) have arrived in Salonika, and will be sent by sea to the south.  The 13th is already underway.  There's only a path of advance 1 hex wide approaching Corinth (which is the only land path to our final objective), so we're going to have to land amphibiously or take too many casualties.  Then again with all these ships we could reduce the entire city to rubble before attacking, that would be easy.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Just south of the front.  All's quiet, but not for long.  The 1st FJ will land somewhere outside Athens and with the help of the shipboard artillery could probably take the city by themselves.  Feel up to it, Monkeyhead?  There could be a medal in it for you!

I would do anything for a shiny.

Oh, and what do you mean better? Last time I singlehandedly wiped out tanks and everybody died. How could assaulting Athens top that? Do I get to explode the Parthenon, or at least draw on it with my pen?

UNESCO would throw a fit if we blew up the Parthenon.  You can pee on any ruins you find, though.
