Why is the default uniform for marksdwarves leather?
« on: December 08, 2011, 02:03:01 pm »

I can't help but notice that they get a leather shield and leather everything else by default.

To me, it seems like this leaves them rather squishy. I'm thinking about creating Dwarven Immortals by giving them copper crossbows, copper shields and layered steel. Do they suffer a penalty to hit when weighed down like that?

I think it's more for efficiency in terms of resources.  Ideally, at least in the beginning, your marksdwarves shouldn't have to worry about too much, provided they're shooting from behind fortifications.  Once elite bowman show up, that changes, but until then, it's fine to save metal armor for frontline fighters, unless you're swimming in it.

Yeah, it usually makes sense for your melee troops to have priority on the best armour at the start. It would be nice if we were able to make our own templates though.

It's a matter of combat effectiveness, not resource efficiency - since marksdwarves don't spar, they never train up their Armor User skill (aside from brief demonstrations) and thus suffer a significant speed penalty from the extra weight of the armor.

If you put your marksdwarves through sufficient melee training to boost their Armor User skill up high enough, then they can wear metal armor without significant encumbrance penalties.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

What do you mean? You CAN make your own templates, they are called Uniforms, and you can define any number of them in the military screen->uniforms tab.

*evil grin* I think I know what I'm doing next.

Marksdwarves will train armor if given a regular barracks in addition to the archery ranges, but you can also put them in danger rooms...

I meant your own default templates, in addition or alternative to 'Leather Armor' etc., rather than having to define them again for each new fort.
