I must register my surprise that no one's posted this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pISzxdEgDCU&feature=related

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

At a quick glance, I thought it said "song of dorian", and began to wonder why no one informed me that there was a song about me.

Holy crap this has gotten a lot more epic than I expected. I was thinking about things like "Sixteen Tons"
Quote
On the day I was born, the sun didn't shine
Picked up my pick, an' walked to the mine
Dug sixteen tone of number nine coal
And the foreman said, "Well, bless my soul."

And then I'd follow that up with some Simon & Garfunkel
Quote
I've built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none can penetrate.
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb,
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock!
I am an iiiiiiiiisland.

And finish off with what probably inspired a fair bit of DF (at least the embark):
Quote
We dig, dig, dig, dig, dig, dig, dig, in our mine the whole day through,
We dig, dig, dig, dig, dig, dig, dig, is what we like to do.
It ain't no trick, you get rich quick, if you dig dig dig with a shovel or a pick.
In a mine. In a mine
In a mine! In a mine!
Where a million diamonds SHINE!

But Lemunde, Samaliel, and Captain Mayhem, those knocked my +cave spider silk socks+ off.

My dwarves sing the ancient battle hymn that tells them that through affirmation of the transubstantial self they will live forever. Also, gold.

To quote the hymn itself:

Gold
Always believe in your soul
You've got the power to know
You're indestructible
Always believe in, because you are
Gold

You nay ever gonna keep me down
I get knocked down, but I get up again
You nay ever gonna keep me down
I get knocked down, but I get up again
You nay ever gonna keep me down

and so on

Tubthumping. Seconded. Now I need to listen to this song again.

I like to imagine they produce a kind of unusual cacophony involving many metallic organs and tools (musical hammers and anvils), and crystalline structures. Add Percussion with "natural elements" like hides (goblin, elven) and bone flutes.

Think of an opera, a choir of deep voices and lots of stings and rimshots coupled with the "Choir of the Damned" (soprano) from down below.

"Mining - The Glory of Mountainhome"
[Apologies to Bon Jovi, "Wanted: Dead or Alive"]
We are all slaves, only the depth does change
Everyday it seems we are grinding away
Another hall where the rock is to be found
I'd mine all day just to sleep upon the ground

I'm a miner, with my pick for the throne
For the glory of High Armok
And the Mountainhome

Sometimes I dig, sometimes I have to run
From the fun stuff I find hidden deep within a hole
Sometimes I tell the month
By the booze that I drink
And sometimes when I'm drinking, I'm sitting in a funk.

I'm a miner, with my pick for the throne
For the glory of High Armok
And the Mountainhome

I mine the halls, with my pick on my back.
I level up in Mining, so that I can make it back.
I been to the depths, from the caverns and despair
I've seen a hundred demons, and I returned from their lair.

I'm a miner, with my pick for the throne
Glory for the Mountainhome!
I'm a miner, wearing a plate made of bone
Glory for the Mountainhome!
And I delve, for Mountainhome!
For Mountainhome [x4]

Well, this is more for the overseer, but "The Impossible Dream" seems like it belongs here.

As for song rewrites might I suggest "Boatmurdered Rhapsody" or " Only Soap-makers Die Young"?

EDIT: For that list of rewrites, I forgot "We Did Start the Fire".
