But I don't want to use something much better :(
« on: December 07, 2011, 03:57:41 pm »

It goes something like this.

"Here Urist McLegend, use this adamantine copper crossbow instead of that one!"

"But I, I, *sob* like my *heavy sobbing* copper adamantine crossbow! :("

It goes like this for my axelords too, they are content with steel and iron.  I want them to use the adamantine axes and shields I just made, but NO.

So, is there any way to fix this without a crapton of micro-managing?

Firing from his hip?  If they are going to be that boss about it, I'll let it slide, also the crossbow was just for effect,  I'm mostly trying to get them to take adamantine melee and shields, as my crossbows tend to dominate with any material.

addy crossbow is a BIG no-no, copper is best for them, next to silver (which can't be made into crossbows, IIRC) due to their weight.

also, have they grown attached to the weapons? if this is the case, they will NEVER let them go. even if you remove the arms and legs. somone had a dorf shooting a crossbow from it's hip

In Dorf school, when they say firing by the hip...

Do not use candy shields, it makes for a shield bash with the force of tickling their nuts.

I guess they hold it between their thighs?

Or with their hips.

That gave me a chuckle, shush, I'll do whatever I want with my 200+ adamantine strands.

Stop being so coy! They use thier butt cheeks to aim and when they need to shoot they fart!

Don't make me explain what happens when a misfire occurs...

One way to do it is go through your stocks menu forbidding weapons of the wrong material.  An even more effective way does the former and puts all unwanted weapons into weapon traps where they can't be claimed.  If dwarves grow used/attached to a weapon usually they like using it over more expensive options, but the most expensive option is the default.

In earlier versions, some people have had success with specifying another material in uniforms.  Anyone know if this works in 31.25?

Two of my swordmasters grew attached to their iron swords. Few years down the road they named their weapons. I produced steel swords and specified the sword material in their uniform as steel. No luck. Then I changed the uniform settings from "partial match" to "exact match" and they dropped their oh so precious +iron short swords+ to pick up shiny new steel blades. Can't remember who got attached to what since then so can't replicate.

Being attached to a weapon doesn't mean they'll tantrum just because you wrenched it off them (Drop manipulation should do the trick). It's when they name the weapon that... well I don't actually know what happens if you force them off it then. This is why I get my weapons industry going quickly, so they can get attached to decent weapons.

I keep seeing things like copper shield or copper crossbows.  Why not steel?  Any specifics you guys feel to feed us with?

Because copper is denser and both shields and crossbows don't actually care what material they're made of to do their primary job. The hope is that when a dwarf resorts to bashing with those items, the extra density helps put more punch into this secondary use.
