What makes a Dwarf, a Dwarf?

Reckless ingenuity.
Beards.
Reckless determination.
Reckless stupidity.
The ability to end all life, accidentally.
The ability to end all life purposely.
Wanton slaughter.
Alcohol dependencies.
Being short/Small stature. (I'm looking at you DZA)
Doing the most inefficient thing possible in the most inefficient way possible to achieve an unknown goal usually not even known by the dwarf performing such a task until the task is complete... And such the goal turns out to be useless, dangerous or both
The ability to admire doors.
The ability to tantrum.
The ability to make sense of the illogical and physics defying.
The ability to make problems out of the simplest of tasks...
The ability to make demons out of the most mundane of animals.
Soap making.
Magma.
Machines and contraptions... Pretty much anything involving mechanisms.
The ability to protect one's sanity with fine roasts and lovely halls filled with golden statues of roaches
Immense hatred of everything that moves. (Includes inanimate objects)... Wait...
Living underground

EPIC !!PHILOSOPHY!! TIME!

Post suggestions for the poll (unless they're REALLY Dorfy), and it would help if you also vote/+give the reason why you think what you voted for makes a dwarf... a Dwarf.

i.e. Alcohol dependencies make dwarves Dwarfs, because without such booze, there would be no tamper tantrum rage, no drunken catsplosions, "accidental" fun e.t.c...
Have !FUN!

Philosophy, you say? HELL YEAH!*throws hand up into the air, awaits high-five*

Anyway, you seem to have left out one of the single most important features of being a dwarf. Their small stature. That, mixed with the reckless ingenuity, and  think we have identified two of the main distinguishing traits of a dwarf.

I went for reckless ingenuity because it fits the best with being fond of industry. Plus, I always took that whole "fond of industry" thing to be more of a euphemism for the reckless ambition we all seem to call "being dorfy".

It was inspired by moustaches.

Yeah, if DF humans are prone to great ambition, then dwarves...

It's a shame one can only choose one.

I chose beards. The dwarf is actually just a host for the beard, which does what little thinking goes on, and commands the dwarf to do everything.

You mean that thing I totally didn't notice? Yeah, I suppose it does.

I deliberately kept it at one so people would think A LOT about the Dorfiest characteristic of dwarves, instead of just going with the largest Dorf meme currently circulating.

Speaking of memes...

Killed his kids, killed his wife, killed his friends, killed his cat and destroyed his masterpieces but he admired a fine door recently. Urist is pretty happy.
Obvious choice.

The essence of being a dwarf is being inefficient... with unerring efficiency  :P

therefore I chose inefficiency.

I also just had a human diplomat enter from the surface, hold a meeting, then exit the map via hell.... I guess he thinks he's pretty hardass.

My Dwarves all seem to appreciate doors the most too, odd huh?
Perhaps they see doors as another obstacle to admire, weaponize and smash? XP

But... But why? D:

We need another button to tick.

The ability to forget even the most tragic events by eating a nice roast in an amazing dining hall.

No 'all of the above'?

But, if toady one day had some weird accident and had to make dwarf fortress into elf fortress, and there was only one thing I'd  be able to preserve from the former creatures, it'd be machines & components.
