Dwarf Fortress d20 game
« on: December 06, 2011, 05:13:54 pm »

Howdy!

I'm new to the DF forums, but I'm a long-time player of Dwarf Fortress.

Essentially, I'm thinking of creating a DF-based d20 game for my friends and I to play. We play other d20 games like D&D and Paranoia.

Any suggestions/comments/concerns?

I think it's been mentioned here a few times before, but I don't think anyone's ever tried to go through with it. "dwarf fortress tabletop rpg" came up as a search suggestion on Google, so obviously there's a demand for it.

I say go for it! :D

Though obviously it would be quite the project. But there're plenty of people around here that would be willing to help.

Thanks!

I'm considering something where the DM is the "environment" and works against the players. Perhaps I could devise a "madness" system that would eventually make players lose control of characters and go on tantrums.

Another thing I've been thinking about that I wanted feedback on was this:
Should the players control a single dwarf with DM-controlled other dwarves, single dwarves with no other dwarves and no migrations for some reason, or multiple dwarves each (each migration wave they would get more dwarves to control)? I'm personally leaning towards players controlling multiple dwarves.

If you want it to be true to the spirit of DF, you should have several charts for "site" generation. So you start with biome, secondary biome features, encounter lists written up for each biome to reflect what's there, a random roll for which kind of civ is nearby, stuff of that nature. Would make it very easy to generate 1 off adventures.

Yes, i was thinking something like that. I'd have random rolls for giant beasts and such. Perhaps the players could choose the natural hostility of the region and the number of beasts and such before starting a game which would influence the percentile rolls for encounters.

If you're looking for inspiration on some of the systems.

Rule 0: The DM must be referred to by players as "Armok". So, are you planning on letting players play as other races, or would everyone be Dwarves? Do you plan to limit campaigns to fortress-building?

I will focus on fortress mode to begin with, but I will eventually add a second set of rules (based off of the core combat rules) for adventure mode where players can play as any race. For now, I'm thinking Dwarves only for fortress mode. Good idea with the Armok thing, too.

You have my support for this. I've seen similar stuff before, but everyone here <3 DF (obviously), so you'll get plenty of interest  :P

I've made some progress on the game. I started writing a player's guide that details the game rules. So far, I've covered all attributes and skills, combat mechanics, controlling and distributing dwarves, and some other mechanics. I'll upload something soon.

We'll have to think of an interesting way to cover multiple dwarves. With what you have now, do the players individually control multiple dwarves or control one directly and give general orders to the rest? Perhaps different areas of skill (stoneworkers, craftsdwarves, mechanics) could be player "classes", and a player "leveling up" is represented by more migrants of that type coming to the fort?

Are you planning on a small, detailed scope, or one with a larger scale and more abstraction?

SO MANY QUESTIONS AND IDEAS

I have a plan for handling dwarves. My plan is that the fort starts out with the standard seven dwarves, and more will arrive in migration waves. Dwarves will be distributed uniformly until there is a remainder, in which case all players roll and the highest rolled (or closest to a number or whatever - doesn't matter) gets the dwarf. This will be done until all dwarves are divvied up. The next time more dwarves are added, the numbers will be balanced back out before the uniform distribution begins again.

I'm trying to simplify the control of dwarves to keep the game running smooth and not make it take an eternity. I have all of the skills and bonuses (for higher skill levels - usually increased productivity) figured out. Players control dwarves during 6-hour long (game time) rounds, in which they can be given a single task. Combat rounds are five seconds.

I hope I answered your questions.

I'm still working on typing the actual document, but progress is coming along nicely.

So, essentially, the players represent factions? Or are they hive-minds?
