Trent looked at the man and glared at him as he replid, "No the Archon has not hired these men, I did of my own will, you'll find that a xeno fighting for their freedom can be a fearsome thing, and if you wish to continue this battle even though it was declared to be on Church lands then you will have it. Just beware the reparations of what your about to do, many of your men will die trying to kill my men, and if one of your men ends up killing me you will have been the cause of a Lay Deacon's death, and thus it would be Roim's fault. It will be seen as an order from Roim that has caused my death if that happens, and he will be put to death or sent to Vengeance, your a fool to risk that, but if you want a war so be it. I figured the Fool King and his men were smarter that this." With that Trent turned and walked away from the man up the hill towards the fortress, as his back turned to the man he smiled slightly and continued towards the partially constructed fortress. "It seems the Fool King's general wants to start a war, and I'm more then happy to oblige, I've been waiting to get my revenge.", he thought and then his smile grew a bit wider before he reigned his emotions back under control.

((We'll need a small edit of your post))

You're right, you might be a legitimate Deacon after all. I cannot risk the consequence of your life.

Guards. Take this man to the rear and watch him well. I want 6 men with him at any time, and be ready to flee if the Xenos somehow break our ring. Don't kill him, but you have the authorization to inflict nonlethal wound if that's the only way to stop him from trying something funny.

Proceed with the assault. Full-scale assault from all directions against leaderless militia should be an easy fight. Try to keep at least some Xenos alive.

As one of the soldiers got close to Trent he pulled the flintlock pistol from his belt and placed it in-front of the man's head, "General I'll go peacefully, but I'd like to at least give my men their last orders before you do the attack would that be acceptable? I'm also going to request that your men keep their hands to themselves, if any of them touch me I'll take their head off."

((Didn't you said you came weaponless? Anyway, I won't whine and state that you obviously were searched before being taken in, let's get to the fight dammit.))

"You may send them a written order. Now drop this pistol or I'll have to vaporize your arm." said Aerthius, holding his own laser pistol.

(Never stated that I came weaponless, just that I came.)

Trent put the pistol back in his belt and replied, "That's good enough I say, but you sure you want to threaten me really?" Trent said and grinned at the man as he took a piece of paper, and a pen from a pocket on his side to begin writing, "Forgive me for dragging you into this situation, but the enemy is coming. Fight to the last man, and wipe out every single one of them you can, if you can break a hole in their lines and make a run for it. Hide out in one of the villages and use my seal to gain access to those villages, Good Luck and good bye." With that he handed it to the man that was to act as messenger, and started walking towards the back of the lines as he whistled.

I have killed many less insolent than you.

"Guards, seize his weapon and lock hiom up somewhere. If he dare try something again, shoot his arms.
...
Yes, both.
Now, as you said I should not damage Church property. As such, I won't transmit your orders, for they would result in unecessary deaths. I may not be a member of the Church, but I for one actually care for my men's lives."

Send an herald telling the Xenos Trent ordered them to surrender to spare their lifes. If they don't, attack. If Trent try something funny like shouting he did not surrender, have one of the guard knock him out.

Criptian Peninsula

As the Herald reaches the Chest-High Walls he find himself facing a ragtag group of Xenos and Militiamen. [6-1] The Xenos have seen that Trent is surrounded by guards and won't surrender, after all they know how Nova deals with Xenos and moreso they know they Roim is named Scaleskinner. [6-2] The Militia might not be as steeled in their resolve but they seem to still remember the Rule of Salyar and refuse to desert their brothers in arms.

Battle at the Criptian Peninsula

General Aerthius
5 Regiments Novan Regular Infantry (Regular,Frontiermen,Imperial Weaponry,Flak-Armour,Babarians) +6,-1,+4 +3 Morale Numeric Advantage
5 Regiments Coreland Drafted Serfs (Green,Ordinary,Arquebuses,Leather-Armour,Peasants) -2,-3,-2 +3 Morale Numeric Advantage
Large Numeric Advantage: + 3 Morale

Total:+2,-2, +1

Trent's Militia
1 Regiment Xeno Militia (Militia,Xenos,Imperial Weaponry,Flak-Armour,Loyal) +6,-4,+1 +1 Strength Slight Terrain Advantage -2 Morale,-2 Tactics Leaderless
1 Regiment Salyar Militia ( Militia, Frontiermen, Arquebuses, Leather-Armour) +1,-3,-4  +1 Strength Slight Terrain Advantage -2 Morale,-2 Tactics Leaderless

Total: +4,-4,-2

Round 1

Aerthius Orders: Surround and Destroy (causes Morale Shock,Strength Bonus equal to Numeric Advantage)
Militia: -

[6-2=4] vs. [6-4=2] = Surround and Destroy Succeeds!
Morale Test Militia: [3-4= -1], [4+1=5] 1 Regiment Salyar Militia eradicated
Surround and Destroy:  [3+2+3=8] vs. [1+6=7] 1 Regiment Xeno Militia eradicated

Orderly Aerthius Army surrounds the Militia which begins to prepare a Last Stand on the Hill. As Roims troops storm the Hill in unison, Trents Militia breaks and tries to escape only to be shot down as soon as they leave the barricades. The Xenos, deftly outnumbered give the Attackers a hard fight but still, for every Xenos come 10 of Roims men and under the Laser and Musket Barrage not only the Barricade but also the Xenos Resistance disintegrates. [6] In the end a good half of them are captured. After those who are too weak to walk are executed on the spot you still have a quarter of the Militia remaining to do with as you want.

Roim Crushing Victory

What we see here is a clear evidence of how horribly bad untrained troops can go wrong. Had Trent's Militia had a higher Tactics Bonus they might have turned Roims Numeric Advantage into his demise. However the Surround and Destroy suceeded causing a Morale Shock due to the troops being surrounded. The Militia clearly seeing their end at hand tried to make a run. Bad Choice. All Regiments who fail their Morale Shocks when Surrounded are Eradicated. But still at this Point Trent's Xenos could have used their numeric disdvantage to their favour. You see that Roims Army is using the whole Army Bonuses while Trens are only using that of his single Xenos Regiment? That gives smaller armies a chance to make a good last stand and take the edge off larger enemy armies...

((Welp, its seems like I will have to treat entire Nova as double-dealing scum. Trent asks me one thing, Azthor promises another and Roim does something completely different altogether. You gus are disjointed and untrustworthy.))

Archon would not wait around while Trent sorts himself out. He received some worrying news about the development with his deacon, but he will investigate later. Whatever outcome of it was, it will no doubt alllow Archon to operate freely against Roim.

Recruit 5 regiments of Mirrodan Mercenaries. My current troops are to begin slow low-level advance into xeno territory, probing their defences. Aurora is to provide continous orbital support to the ground troops (communications, mapping and navigation systems for ground troops.)

((Roim was straight, Azthor promised things he couldn't deliver, and Trent has no authority whatsover over House Nova (except for its scientists). I don't see your problem.))

Aerthius looked down at the bodies of some of the militiamen. Neither his intelligence officer nor Trent had said a thing about them. The poor men had been rounded up, given whatever weapon could be found in the land and sent to their death.

I hope you are proud of yourself. Many a good man died today because of your foolishness. Pancreator willing, you'll live long enough to learn when to step down. Surrender is less dishonourable than sending men to a senseless death. Now we must make haste, for the Lord Roim will want revenge for the death of so many of his serfs.

Send a letter to Roim telling him everything
Hurry toward Delta-17. Make sure to disarm both the Xenos and Milita. Salvage the weapons and flak armor.
Leave some of the Serfs regiments behind to carve tombstone out of the fortress and bury the death
Pay 2 credits to the militia's family members as compensation

---------

Roim was shocked by the news. Trent was not an isolate fool, but part of a Church plot to gain control over Novan land. Xenos had been used, meaning the damn Archon was ready to break all of the Church's principle in his thirst for power.

Set off to meet the army, sending a letter telling Azthor to catch up with me as soon as possible.
Send emissaries to the various lesser nobles telling them what happened in the Peninsula, and warning them of potential traitors mascerading as priest and using Xenos. Don't incriminate the Church at large or Luthias in those messages.
Transfer the surveillance of Xenos to the army, and reinforce safety in the various arenas. Ask the police to investigate among slaveowner in the Delta-17 regions to find where Trent got his spies from.

Hiring Mercenaries

You can hire Mercenaries at any time although they have real high Maintenance costs and due to fluctuating Markets they may come more expensive than you would like. On other bad news at some times you may find that no Mercs are available due to the ridiculous needs of some Institutions ( Church).

Market Situation: [5-1=4]

Due to the Situation on Vengeance being common knowledge to everybody with an ear, the Triumvirate has gained access to new Stocks as more and more fortune seekers try to get a piece of the cake.

Market Availability: [3-1=2]

And although The Mercenary business is brimming, it still lacks personnel as the Orthodoxy's endless hunger consumes most of the available Merc Regiments.

Market Price: [5-1 = 4]

And although the prices should go up it seems that entrepreneurs in the business keep them at a reasonable level.

As you contact your Triumvirate Contact about Mirrodanian Mercs, he almost laughs you in the face, until he realizes that you are an Archon. He promises to get some stock. he can offer you the following:

2 Regiments Mirrodan Mercenaries (Bloodied,Desertborn,Imperial Weaponry, Flak Armor, Mercs, Loyal) each cost 10 Credits and 3 Credits Maint.

seems like the Mirrodans are highly sought after lately...

As he shows you his meager stock of Mirrodans and sees your displeasure at such low numbers your Contact volunteers that recently other Mercs have entered the Market. Although he states that they are not exactly Church approved and belong to the kind of Mercs a Nobleman would hire and not a Church Official

2 Regiments Argonian Death-Worlders (Bloodied,Deathworlder,Automatic Weapons,Flak Armour,Mercs,Resilent,Barbarians)

2 Regiments Agri-Prime Fusiliers (Bloodied, Ordinary, Half-Automatic Weapons, Flak Armour,Mercs,Disciplined)

Vengeance

Jurislav stopped pacing. He sunk into his seat and gestured for both Tavius and Aeverys to sit.

"You know that the Situation here is unsalvagable. We will loose Lightbringer-Fortress and Lamp. While most important officials have been evacuated i will stay and take the Redeemer Guard with me to join Hood and his Third Repentant and try to rescue the situation. I will not abandon Vengeance not after so many years, not after so many lifes."

he turned around and looked at the two.

"Assassin. You have killed an Inquisitorial Agent. There is no way i can declare you "Purgatus" by specific Order of Inquisitor Joras. Moreso the Ecclesia Iudicatores has issued an order that all Remaining Repentant Regiments in the Hive of Lamp are to defend the city and surrounding Holy Sites. That includes you. All i can do, is to send your Regiment and you to defend the Chapel of Saint Anzhelica."

[4] You Remember that the Chapel was 5 miles south of the Hive. While the Mutant Coalition would arrive from the North. Who would send a Regiment to defend that?

Trent didn't look at the man, but he replied as he stared off into the distance, "Its the exact same thing you did to my family, we had a truce that was supposed to last two more years, and the Fool King broke it simply because we would not pay tribute to pay for the damage we caused in that war. You started it not us, and what happened my family was killed, the woman I love died, my home was burnt down, and the people I cared for under my Father's war were slaughtered. If they were good men they would not have opposed the Church, and you can throw your this entire masquerade away, you don't care about the power of the Church or its teachings, I can tell I didn't either at one time."

He paused and turned his head to the man before replying, his face flat, "Between me and Roim let's see whose truly noble, Roim angered the Church and outright declined a deal that would get Aeverys back, he's killed thousands more innocents with his declarations of war, and even now he rips the land that is so rightfully mine from my hands. Me I caused the death of a few men this day, but I'm striving to get Aeverys back, I tried to take lands that were mine from birth but was denied them, and now I sit here calm as nobility should be in front of all odds. In the long run of things I'll save more lives then you expect." With that he fell silent and went back to staring mindlessly ahead, there was nothing much he could do now.

((I was wondering, is there any way to loose the "peasant" tag? Also, for the record, I was referring to your militiamen when I spoke of good men dying.  :P))

Roim met up with the army roughly halfway between Delta-17 and the peninsula. He hurried to meet the General and his prisoner. The men and a half-dozen guards were soon assembled under the shade of a large oak.

"I'm disappointed Trent. You seemed a bright young man. I know that you've taken to calling me the Fool King, but to me you look like you're the fool. Luthias accepted you under his fold, and rather than serve him, you though you could use his blessing as a license to renegade on your engagement, steal land and send men to their death. When things turned desperate, you sent your men to a certain dead rather than face reality and concede defeat. And now you're manless, landless and friendless and have made the greatest empire of this planet your enemy. Congratulation Trent the Fool!

I know you think I'm a blood-thirsty maniac and you see yourself as the underdog fighting for good. Fool again! Before the Conquest, Si'rka was a mess on constantly warring feudal lords. Now one third of its population enjoy the Pax Novana. Your father was ready to jeopardize this and renegade his oaths in to save on some treasure. Just like you seems to be ready to do so to regain your father's treasure. I made an example of the Old Saylar to preserve the greater good, but sadly I can't make an example of you now. Your allegiance to the Church at least give you some protection.

As is the custom of the land, I will no hear what you have to say for your defense before judging what punishment you deserve. You are accused of arming Xenos, waging war without declaration, conscripting serfs that weren't yours, breaking your promise not to rise military forces, overstepping your authority as Lay Deacon, using the Church's authority for your own profit and swearing fealty to another lord without breking your bond to the Matriarch first.

((Ghazkull ruled you were a retainer. According to everything I found, a retainer is basically a vassal that get money instead of land))

Not all of these offenses can be prosecuted under Novan law. Some will have to be judged by the Archon. But let us hear your defense nonetheless.
