Avery's reaction-to set down her mug and fold her hands-was evidence enough for someone like Tavius, who had known her for a long time, to tell that she had not taken it easily.
"...yes. You and I both know, that accidents do not often happen to the great and powerful.
As for his replacement, I've nothing to believe he's more then a parchment pusher. Still-he's also a suspect.
I can sense you've already sussed out you potential next job. I would need you to investigate him. Simple enough. Find everything you can about him..."
Avery's paused again.
"And, if you should find he was the one who had Garth murdered...well, I'd have another job for you then. But, we'll see what happens then.
Does this sound like a job you're interested in?
I do remember, for a Godless heathen, you are quite good at impersonating a devout member of the clergy. Fooled me, the first time around." She said, remembering their first 'meeting', in which he had taken her by surprise in a church confessional-the first man, and the last to have ever done so. She had hired him not long after.
Avery's thoughts turned to her own date with destiny.
"Then again, if you feel the need to lie low, I can offer you something a bit different...maybe something you might even find morally pleasing, for a change of pace-and profitable, besides. As you know, marriage is followed by...children.
I would need more than a bodyguard, when it happens. I'd need someone who could defend me and my child-to-be...from the shadows. To watch for threats unseen. To kill them, if necessary. I'd do it myself, but therein lies the great irony of motherhood. That which I would most want to protect in the world, I will be almost helpless to do so.
For one, I would trust you with my life, Tavius-and, not because I think you are burdened by sentiment, or the reasons we consider each other friends.
Because, I know you see a job through, once you take it.
For two-If I'm paying you well enough, I'm keeping you busy defending me-and I'd not need to worry about you coming after me on someone else's behalf, at least."
Averys leaned back, taking another sip of coffee.
"Do either of those strike your fancy?"
