Virtual Server?
« on: December 05, 2011, 05:11:26 pm »

I have been tasked with hosting a Minecraft server for a group of people, and for reasons beyond my control, cannot host one myself. In light of this, I was wondering your opionis on what a good VPS would be. That is, based on cost, speed, and space most likely.

Well you have a couple of options, The first and probably the easiest are the minecraft server hosting services such as:
http://servercraft.co/
http://redstonehost.com/

You can also go for a roll your own system and go with a trusted, if slightly expensive provider such as linode
http://www.linode.com/

Or you can google around and find the cheapest priced vps hosters, but bear in mind they may not be suitable for Minecraft hosting. The problem with minecraft is it's quite cpu intensive and if your sharing the cpu with others you have to be mindful of how much you use.

What kind of budget do you have?

Hm, budget. I can manage about $15 comfortably without actually paying anything by using donations from people using the server. Past that and, heaven forbid, I would have to use my own money. Not that it's much of a problem.

I highly recommend Akliz.net for server hosting, they're immensely dependable and IIRC run by SMP of the SMP texture pack fame.
