No more rock nuts?!
« on: December 05, 2011, 02:49:58 pm »

After tons of forts subsisting solely on plump helmets, I've discovered the wonders of quarry bushes and rock nuts as food sources.  Is there a way to reserve a certain amount of rock nuts for planting, other than forbidding and unforbidding?  I sometimes forget and have none left after making rock nut paste, press cake, and oil :(.

You could place two rock nut stockpiles. The first for planting and the second as an overflow for processing. Create a burrow that includes the overflow pile, workshops, and all the residential stuff and assign the workers who process the rock nuts. It should stop them from getting at the first stockpile's contents. It also might be worth getting the planting pile to take from the overflow to make sure it's filled.

Tricky. Have one field burrowed to a farmer's workshop and appropriate stockpiles for processing into Quarry Bush Leaves, and another burrowed to a mill/quern, press, and appropriate stockpiles for processing into paste/oil?

Assign a manager and bookkeeper from the (n)obles screen. Assign tasks according to the quantity of quarry bushes, for example if you have 30 QB then queue up 15 process plant to bag, 15 mill seeds to paste, 15 press paste to oil, 15 make soap from oil, etc.

Also don't forget your herbalist can find more quarry bushes if you accidentally run out of seeds. If you have breached the caverns, mine out a soil/sand/clay layer and your herbalist can forage in safety.

My biggest annoyance with quarry bush industry is accidentally cooking unpressed rock nut paste. :(

You can't use the kitchen menu for paste like you can other foods?

pressed and unpressed rock nut paste show up as the same item in the kitchen menu, there is no easy way to specify "only cook it after I've squeezed the oil out."

(however, rock nut press cake is very low-value compared to quarry bush leaves, not really worth cooking it unless your dwarves are starving or your novice cook needs training.)

Frankly, all I care about what the elves bring me are the grizzly bears. They're fine additions to the military, and are great for training wrestlers.

Ah, using the manager is a perfect solution!  I'm always looking at the stocks page anyway, so keeping abreast of quantities won't be a big deal :).

Another suggestion: have enough planters that some seeds are in the ground at all times. If you run out, some more quarry bushes will be coming up shortly.

For things like this I prefer to do processing in bursts. Wait for a bunch of seeds to pile up, use the manager to schedule enough tasks to get rid of most of them, repeat as necessary.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Forbid enough of them to plant a field.  If you ever run out, just cancel the industry that consumes them and un-forbid your reserve.

This is what I do when I plan to cook or otherwise use up a certain type of seed.

The dwarven trade caravan also brings rock nuts if you run out.  I tend to buy them every time he comes, because my proccess plant to bag task seems to run behind my quarry bush leaves stockpile and I like to always have it growing.
