Also, since we're waiting in the scrap yard send out the scout drone to look for more interesting stuff.
Second, carefully analyse all comm data recorded in the scrapyard, look for traces for communication by the cargo ship and the kamikaze shuttle.
The scout drone finds a badly damaged assembler drone.
It's basicly a type of unmaned ship used in the construction of stations but this one has taken a beating from collsions with other debris in the field.

You come to the conculsion that the encrypted signal the drones and cargo vessel were sending was positional data, the worm on the cargo vessel's computer was using the comn system like a beacon to draw the drones in.
The kamikaze shuttle's static transmission has a difficult to detect pattern which indicates it might be more than static, at the same time the background static had a similar pattern embeded into parts of it.
Someone or something was talking to the shuttle just before it went kamikaze.

> take a nap
You tired you take a nap while some one else looks at the reocrded transmissions.
While you're sleeping the crew get the engine up and running on the cargo ship.

Triangulate the shuttle communication using recorded data.

TRy to look if anything useful remained from the kamikaze ship.

The comunication was heavily disguised and made to look like it came from beyond the systems edge.
However with a bit of know how and a whole pile of sensor records you find that the signal came from the approximate direction of Tabien Station.

Nothing but slag and shards of burnt metal.

How's that cargo ship going?  Is it in good enough condition that we can safely leave our crew aboard on their own?  If so, head back to the Tabien Station.  We have some vengeance to wreak!

Is the station armed/guarded?  What are the chances that the Firestar can successfully fight it if it comes to that?

The cargo ship has considerable damage to it's secondary systems but everything essiential for day to day operations is up and running.
Your crew can now fly it (even from onboard the Firestar)

Last time you where there you spotted a Lance Destroyer, it's the only military ship in the entire system and is only slightly smaller than the firestar.
It's got eight point defense turrets, three heavy turrets mounting tripple railguns each (scaled down versions of what the firestar uses) 20 missile bays (it's supplied by the military so it'll think nothing of launching all it's large supplies of missiles at you).
The station itself likely has a large number of fighters, pilots and drones to throw at you and at least six point defense turrets.

Just to check; anyone have any last suggestions to drop in before head back to Tabien?

Head back to the station. Act casual. SOmeone on the staion is controlling the drones, whit doesn't essentially means the entire station is evil.

Yeah, there's probably only one person, or a small handful of people on (or near) the station who know whats really going on with the drones.  On the other hand, a healthy dose of paranoia never hurts.  If everyone actually IS out to get you, at least you'll see it coming!!

Back once again to Tabien station.
The docking staff are becoming used to the sight of the Firestar's arrival.
Messages again flood into your computer, everything from mecnaries and spacers looking for work to job offers and adverts.
Spoiler: Tabien Pricelist (click to show/hide)
Supply nor prices have changed since you where last here.
In other news one of the crew men you left here to recover has been dischargered.
He's noticably disorientated and weak, you are told by his doctors that he is to rest for the next few days so that he can fully recover.
The remaining injured crew member is in intensive care and still hasn't stabilized.

Perhaps we should go to the authorities.  They probably have, or can get, access to the Tabien Station communications systems to see where exactly the signal originated.  Or hack it ourselves, which is almost certainly illegal and quite difficult to do (especially without someone noticing)

Also, is there anyone here that can sell us a better maneuvering/thrusters program?  Or maybe someone who can tweak our existing one to give us better maneuverability?

We're the ones flying in an unregistered warship with blackmarket misseles onboard. Going to the authorities might not be a good thing.

Maybe we should trust someone on the Tabien station.

Anyway , gather information , look for clues and look at all the jobs, mercenaries and whatever contracts are being offered.

Specifically, gather information about any hacker groups or whatever that might be on the station, and, as for clues, try to find any transmitters that would be able to broadcast the control signal. Look for anything out of place on or around the transmitters.

You're not really supposed to hack apart a ship operating systems like Armok has done and his modular operating system is quite unquie.
If you want better thruster software you'll have to get hold of the computer system of something with a similar exhaust port setup to the Firestar's and convert it into a software module.

Mercenaries;
Three man security team equiped with light armour and assualt rifles; Served as security for four years in a major firm before going freelance; 250 for three week contract
Pilot without a fighter; ex pirate having served jail time; 100 for three week contract
Pilot with armed shuttle; boasts about seven downed fighters but no paperwork to back up any of his claims; 400 for standard contract (four week)
Doctor with basic equipment and an smg; trained combat medic; 150 for standard contract
Spacers(a renewable reasource); act as basic crewmen; 10 credits per spacer per week

Contracts;
Escourt Frieghter to Galvenn (the frieghter contains nothing important but it's captain has refused to pay a pirates protection racket and expects trouble)
Destroy a stolen cargo vessel in the scrapfield which is carrying dangerous cargo
Join search and rescue attempts to locate a missing scavanger vessel
Search for a lost family heirloom

Your aparent relability has caught the attention of several reps for some of the major corporations who offer you and your crew empolyement as part of their respective companies.
Unfortunatly to take any of these you'll need to be registered.
Jobs;
The Vigilant (a private security company, they have access to a large supply of offensive weapons and can easily get you a permit for them)
Kepler Shipping (a transport company with stations all over the place and free fuel for the ships of it's fleet)
The privateers guild (Not really a corporation, they offer no pay but a better supply of high paying contracts and suppliers of some materials and euipment it's hard to find legaly)

Asking around you don't find much, just that things have been buisness as normal on the station.
You're in one of the bars fishing for information when an odd man sits down next to you.
"You're one of the guys crewing that Firestar ship aren't you?"
He's dressed causaly but there's something about him that makes him seem out of place.
Each system is fairly cut off and tends to develop it's own distinct accent and mannerisms.
This guy is clearly not from the Tabien system or it's neighbours based off the way he talks and acts.

Specifically, gather information about any hacker groups or whatever that might be on the station, and, as for clues, try to find any transmitters that would be able to broadcast the control signal. Look for anything out of place on or around the transmitters.
There are a number of skilled hackers selling their services on the black market, they're not in a group but they'll take jobs from any annomous client with enough cash.
There are several transmitters capable of transmitting the signal on the station, one on the military destroyer that's currently docked and several comns satilites that should be powerful enough.
Nothing appears out of place on any of them though.

I think we need to saddle up with a company in the future, how about we open talks with "The Vigilant" and see how they normally operate, if we can leave the group at any time for instance. I think it would be our best bet, they provide jobs and legal papers as we work our way towards the more populated systems where we can start really getting into the fun stuff. We can leave them with a "We will consider you in the future" for now.

Until then lets stock up on some weapons, buy all 7 interceptors, and 39 cannon shells along with enough food so we will have 100 rations.
Buy some good food also lets have a small feast on the ship tonight, everyone get some rest and bring morale up.

The crew member in the bar should start up that conversation with the out of place gentleman. Confirm we are from the Firestar, inquire to his business.

Edit: Anyone want to give a quick synopsis on the plan with the cargo ship/ why we hacked apart our ships OS.

I have no clue what the plan is with the cargo ship, but the Firestar's computer was completely wiped when you found it so instead you hacked apart the OS of your shuttle to give you something usable, upgradable and make it all round better suited to a task it was never intended.

You make some purchases and arranage a feast for latter tonight to celebrate one of your crewmens recovery and to raise morale.

The Vigilant Guard (left out the guard part) run escourts and onbaord secruity for trading ships through out the terriotires of the Collective of Imperial worlds.
They're also often contracted by the local noble houses to deal with problems (such as pirates) that they're too buisy to deal with themselves.
Joining them means you can requistion weapons and missiles from their extensive military surplus arsenal and their conections to the government means they find it easy to speed permits and other fiddly papperwork through the bureaucracy.
But their contract sepecifies a minium one month contract after which you can end the contract be giving a four day notice.

To the stranger, the crewman says, "...and I'm deeply curious what business an obvious outsider like you has in the Tabien system. If you'd care to enlighten me, I might be willing to do the same."
