Shouldnt I have been in the shuttle?

In a distant System:
High General Raldierf lounged in her chair alone, her fingers tapping restlessly on the console before her, lazily rolling a flash drive around in her lips. Intelligence reports scrolled past on the screen, some times with a tap of a button she would pause them for a more detailed read and with another tap dismiss them.
Fiddling with her long white hair she stopped another report.
A steaming mug of strong smelling coffee was placed gently on the console next to her as she read by a man wearing the typical, over decorated, complicated uniform of an imperial officer.
"Anything interesting?" asked the newcomer as he sipped his own coffee.
Dismissing the report she looked back at him shaking her head "Not really, just something about an unregistered warship in the Tabien system.
Normally that'd be a bit of a problem but they haven't done any thing disruptive and we have more important things to do than chase people who are just dodging taxes,"
"...or are flying a ship made up to look like a warship and don't want their secret to come out when they register," added the officer.
Raldierf took the flash memory from her mouth and inserted it into the computer. In response the computer filled the screen with images of United Sol League fleet build ups.
"We'll have someone deal with them later whatever their reasons but first I am considering our options. The USL is just looking for an excuse to attack us and enforce their claims in the disputed zone by force. I think we should give them one... we should launch a preemptive attack and cripple their forces as they gather them,"
"You mean go to war?" replied the officer casually sipping his coffee.
"The emperor will support this plan as will many of the houses and anyone else who's realized the USL's refusal to back down has made war inevitable. I merely want to start it on my terms,"

Meanwhile in a scrapyard:
The signal stops transmitting, the shuttle begins burning through it's tether and an order is given for the crew members to put distance between them and the shuttle.
A few men aboard the shuttle search for the computer core in an effort to disable it.
While flying to safety John Varayis realizes there are still crewmen on the shuttle and immediately fires his thrusters and heads back to go and get them.
As he reaches the outside of it's airlock a triumphant call is heard over the comns.
"I've found it!" cries one of the men aboard the shuttle.
The ship jolts and suddenly accelerates as the cable fails.
The tether whips back hitting a EVA wearing crew member in the chest, slicing through it's outer layers, smashing four of his ribs and propelling him into the side of the firestar.
Point defense fire from the turrets blaze around the shuttle barely missing as it dodges and maneuverers, the heat of each near miss scoring the outside.
With a vice like grip John clings to the edge of the outer airlock.
The shuttle flies unpredictably, gradually distancing itself from the Firestar's vulnerable side.
Grunting with the effort John pulls himself inside despite the craft's high acceleration.
Inside the crewmen struggle to contain the loose crates of impact sensitive explosives bouncing around inside as the shuttle flips, spins and turns.
Flying past the Firestar's engine, the shuttle barrels towards the cargo vessel the Firestar is towing.

(I'm back, for good this time!)
Use the thrusters on the EVA suit.

Shouldnt I have been in the shuttle?
Well yes but I'm a little relucant to arbitraily put players in places with little to no chance of survival.
If you ever die I want it to be your own fault :P

Ooo, cool starmap.

Anyway, the other crew members in EVA near the ship should get the one who was hit by the cable inside and to the medbay immediately.

The other crewmembers grab him and hurry him inside to the Firestar's medbay.
He's barely concious and is coughing up blood from a punctured lung as the crew try to carefuly strip him of the damaged space suit.
It occurs to them that noone aboard knows more than some simple first aid.
They do what they can to stabilise him but report that they need to bring him to a some one who actualy knows what all the stuff in the medbay actualy does if they're going to save him.

Would the cargo shuttle be fast enough to get him to the station in time? Or fast enough to catch up with the runaway explosive shuttle while the Firestar heads to the station? I guess at the very least we should send out a medical emergency.

Yes it would be able to get him to the station, (but the Firestar is very fast ship and could get him there much quicker.)
As for the explosive shuttle you've got about thirty seconds before it slams into the cargo ship you guys are towing which isn't enough time to launch your shuttle.
It's still in range of your rear guns and it's stopped darting around so much, you could try and shoot it down again but it has three crew members aboard (one of which is a player)
They might be able to stop it themselves but don't have much time.
So what will you do?
Will you sacrfice them to save the cargo ship, will you give them the time and maybe suggestions to save themselves or will you do something I have not anticpated?

Can we fire miselles in lamprey mode?( ie attaching them but not detonating the warhead immediatly.)

All the missiles you have detonate on impact and the only ones you have that can even attach to something are the tether anchors.
There are missiles and missile like weapons (guided remote mines, tracking beacons, driller nukes etc) that can be used like that but you unfortunatly don't have any of those yet.

Let's try to tow the cargo ship as much away from their path as possible (up, forward, and the opposite direction) and as fast and hard as possible, even if we risk breaking the other cable.

Opening the Firestar's engine exhaust ports on full you pull the cargo vessel upward.
The shuttle changes course to intercept with ease.
The small and nimble shuttle is already at speed, between the firestar and the cargo ship and can change course easier than the towed cargo ship.

Just before the shuttle changed course one of the crew aboard the Firestar noted that it sent a short transmission comprised of nothing more than static.
20 seconds to impact.

We have three options now(as far as I see it).
1. Do nothing, hope that the crew will be able to adjust the ships course
2. Fire, and destroy the shuttle and kill the crew inside.(Favoured)
3. Use the firestars armor plating to push the shuttle of course ( make sure the arcelleration is never higher than what the shuttle did before)

In all cases, repeat the static message and see how the shuttle reacts

1)They've tried that and haven't had much luck. But one of the crew men reports he might be able to cut it's fuel lines, of course he doesn't have much time and the other crewmembers aboard the shuttle are skeptical that he can do it and are thinking of bailing out of the shuttle instead (even if they do they'll probably still be killed in the blast if you shoot the thing).
2) Ok I'm going to wait a bit longer and if no one else posts an alternative then it's time for shuttle boom.
3) It's behind you which'll make pushing the shuttle tricky but doable (the firestar can fly in reverse). The shuttle is a great deal smaller than you though so you'd need to match it's speed very closely so you don't smash it into little bits and blowing a chunk out of the firestar in the process.

The static is indistinguishable from the general white noise of space.
It's several hundred years after this region of space was colonised and fragmented, degraded radio signals from neighbouring systems bounce around the place creating a constant aura of nearly meaningful data.
The shuttle doesn't respond to the returned static.

GET THEM OUT!
20 seconds to impact.
"GET OUT!" yells John across the comns as he grabs one of the crew men and shoves him out of the open airlock.
19
The other one drops his tools, fires his thrusters and follows him out of the shuttle.
18
The last one to  leave John jumps from the airlock and fires his thrusters at full burn.
17
The shuttle accelerates away from them drawing rapidly closer to the cargo ship as the three crew men burn through the EVA suits limited fuel in a race to escape the coming blast.
16
Almost as if in slow motion the rear turret turns to track the shuttle.
15
The shuttle is moving in a straight line this time, the turret will not miss.
With fifteen seconds left till impact on the bridge of the Firestar the order to fire is given.
14
Energy races down huming power lines, the barrel of the point defence turret begins to glow an incandescant orange.
A bright beam punctures the small silver hull of the shuttle.
It comes apart as molten metal fragments from the wreck are spat into space.
For a few heartbeats the shining remainants paint a beautiful sight across the black canvass of space.
It's ripped apart from within as the explosives catch, a vast firery shockwave hurls broken metal in all directions.
The crew men empty their suits fuel tanks in an effort to escape but it isn't enough.
The blast wave smashes into them.
John's head is whipped around in his helmet ramning his forehead into his visor, his left arm is snapped like a twig as metal pole clips it as it flies past.
He can feel the raw heat of the detonation overcoming the insulation of his suit and socrtching his back.
One of the other crew men screams in agony over the comns.
His suit is full of small holes that the EVA suit's emergancey systems where able to seal and one gapping hole where his leg used to be that the suit can't seem to seal off.
The last crew man's visor has been smashed in, shattered pieces of it have embeded in his bloodied face which is locked in an endless expression of terror.
He floats gracefuly through space, his arm reaching out for John in a pleading gesture.
The attempt to flee the explosion and the resulting blast has sent you drifting towards the Firestar.
You'll reach it in about five minutes.
Additionaly the explosion happened close enough to the tether cable to cut it.
It's at this moment that the cargo ship's computer decides to cheerfuly inform you that it's finished it's self repair activities.

Let's leave some crew behind to fix up the cargo ship while we take the injured crew members to the station for medical attention.
