Which ones, specifically, did you read? Because I have a ton more suggestions, but I need to know which suggestions you enjoyed out of the ones you tried.

(and people often like to hear if their recommendations went well or not, I'm sure there are others in the thread who feel the same)

Right. In addition to those books previously mentioned, I enjoyed the Black Company, Greg Egan's stuff. (However, I'm in a mood for fantasy rather than Sci-Fi). I tried (but didn't like quite so much) A stranger in a strange land, and was unable to get a hold of the other books mentioned (Thieves world, Snowcraft, ect.) Also, I may have forgotten to mention other books I have read.

Alright, if you liked the Black Company than I'm going to reiterate Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson. Black Company is as far into military fantasy as I go, but I've heard Erikson has a similar style. The two of them are often compared favorably with each other.

I'm not sure if your library would have it yet, but if it does, The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson might also interest you.

"Godel, Escher, Bach" by Hofstadter. Non-fiction which is incredibly well done, and a great read if you want something very interesting and intellectual, though a very dense read as it covers topics ranging from number theory and logic to artificial intelligence and consciousness in almost as much depth as you would get from good college courses on the topics.

I read and loved the Way of Kings, and I am unable to get Book of the Fallen or any other Steven Erikson... If only my library was bigger! I am certainly glad of the online catalog...

Here are some suggestions if your looking for some comedy:
Dirk Gently series by Douglas Adams
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman

If your looking for some classics here are some:
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne

If your looking for another 80s sci-fi/fantasy series try the Well of Souls series by Jack Chalker. I never finished a book, but I enjoyed what I read of it. The first book is Midnight at the Well of Souls. I think that is enough books from me. :P I think I should start reading again myself.

Well, since you haven't said you read it, let's go with this: The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. As a friend of mine put it, it's not only good fantasy but a master class in creative profanity.

Dirk Gently is awesome, like many of Douglas Adams books are.

If your looking for a steampunk book set during the civil war which has zombies, then I suggest you pick up Boneshaker by Cheryl Priest. Pretty damn good read in my opinion, and the second book is just as good.

I have read 1-4 and 6. I'm not really in the mood for classics and I was unable to get the Well of Souls.

I have placed a hold on this and Boneshaker. Thanks for the suggestions; expect this thread to resurface in a week or so.

Would the Dresden Files be a good series for you? Storm Front would be the first book.

Heh, I wanted to suggest it. Interesting books - it is not great literature, rather "read & forget". But reading is quite interesting, protagonist and villains are not dumb idiots. Worldbuilding is also OK, dresdenverse is quite consistent and there are interesting ideas and combinations of classic "blocks".
